Hi,

Well you could take a look at [digital] Texturing & Painting by Owen Demers (New Riders)

This book will tell you some general ideas about observing and examining textures and materials around you, with a view to making CG texture maps.

Also shows some basic texturing examples by working through a project in Maya (though im sure the concepts are ok for all 3D packages)

You also might want to look at digital Lighting & Rendering by Jeremy Birn. Nice lighting will make your textures look cool.

Hope this is helpful :)
