View Full Version : Gods & Demons - Character - Mike RB
Mike RB 03-12-2002, 08:36 PM Hi everyone. I'm pretty busy this month with other projects but hopefully I can put in enough time to do justice to my quick sketch.
Hes a demon, but a low end one, maybe the guy that whips you when you arent shoveling coal for the fires of hell fast enough, or the maybe the thing you summon by accident when your trying to summon a 'real' demon with claws and wings and stuff.
I figure he'd stand about twice the height of a person.
I'll be modeling him in Lightwave 7.0b, and like Martin i like making timelapse videos. :)

oops, i forgot to mention. He's a big fat heap of skin tossed on a bone structure. You're seeing his skeleton underneath poking out and tearing through the skin at the joints...

a bit more work done, mainly detailing the 'pecs' and the hips. I recorded it as well but wont post that part until the end, it took a while and is pretty long and boring (never mind a rather large filesize).
It took me a while to figure out the loops on the hips so that ill be able to detail the rolls on his things easily.

modeling fatties is not so easy as it would seem, eh?
So many subtle undulating rolls of flesh to contend with..
It looks like you have it handled well though!
Mike RB
03-13-2002, 05:44 AM
Thanks. Its actually quite a fun challenge to get all the edge's lining up in preperation of the rolls.....
LW modeler always amazes me with how transparent it feels to work in. I just push polys around. Makes it feel almost easy.....

watched your video. good stuff :) it looked as if you were having a hard time thinking of how you were going to setup the waist.
and about the transparent thing in lw. feel the same way about mirai :) mm....me join in too. but im still thinking what ill end up making. keep it up man. i havent seen new things from ya in a while now. looking forward to it.

I took a look at the making-of video ...
Wanted to say how cool it is to see such "how to" movies .. thanks a lot :D
Now .. the question :
What is the tool you're using to split polygons, the tool which display little percentages in green ?? is it the Edgetool plugin ?
It really looks like a simple and useful tool ...
Mike RB
03-13-2002, 01:57 PM
http://www3.telus.net/paratrooper/GDchallenge_mike_005.jpg
Yes its the DStorm edgetool.p. I use the edgetool plugin a lot, its great.
Quick update. I have the head roughed out, minus the skeletal face/teeth...

Your character is turning out really nice, The proportion of his head to the body truly works.
Mike RB

http://www3.telus.net/paratrooper/GDchallenge_mike_006.jpg
thanks. Heres a pic of the roughed out head. I'm going to get the entire body up to this level before i add detail.
Mike RB
03-14-2002, 08:34 PM
http://www3.telus.net/paratrooper/GDchallenge_mike_007.jpg
decent update. I have the arms and legs roughed out to go along with the body.... Its kind of weird using this edgetool plugin, Im much more prone to just cutting edges wherever I want. Which is a good thing (as I can put them where I need). But I tend to make a lot more 3, 5, and 6 sided polys. I'll be cleaning the mesh for a while to get it back to mainly quads....
rendermonkey23
03-14-2002, 08:59 PM
Yeah!, I like where your going with this.
I know you just updated this but I want another :p
Mike RB
03-14-2002, 09:14 PM
I need to put him away for a little bit and get some 'real' work done. :) Its fun to model 'detail in'. Most LW tutorials out there start modeling people from a nipple or an eye or somthing.... It's much easier to make sure the proportions are how you want them if you block everything out 1st and then cut the detail in. Which is what im trying to do with this model.
I've learned a lot from watching Mirai users.... Modeling like this is almost like sculpting clay rather than the 'operating room' feel of hooking eye patches to mouths and extending skin....
cerreto
03-14-2002, 09:17 PM
looking just like the concept sketch man nice work !
rendermonkey23
03-14-2002, 09:21 PM
oh yeah, you definitely have to block your character first. Just think about drawing a character... you start with a loose gesture and gradually work detail in from there.
Mike RB
03-14-2002, 09:24 PM
Thanks man. I'm trying not to throw my drawing in one of the viewports and 'trace' it. (i did for a little while to get the face details the right proportions, i had the eyes set way to wide and it didnt look right).
I find that unless I draw 3 images (top, right, front) i tend to 'trace' it in one viewport and ignore the other views a little too much. The model ends up looking a little flat. So im using the art as a reference only so that ill also concentrate on the other views/areas of the model. I'm getting pretty happy with how the back is turning out and im not sure if hed be as well rounded if I had dumped the art into a viewport and copied it exactly....

Man-bosom? DONT....even want to know :)
Mike RB
03-14-2002, 09:28 PM
rendermonkey: That makes complete sense, yet a lot of people start with tiny tiny details before they have a look at the whole picture.....
Props i can understand, the wristwatch on the characters wrist probably wont change much and you can engrave the 'water resistant to 50m' on the back of it right at the start and probably be fine.
But I cant imagine totally readjusting the proportions and volume of a character that the tear duct was the 1st thing that was modeled... You would be less likely to tweak the whole shape because of all that painstaking detail.
Mike RB
03-15-2002, 03:03 AM
before I add anything else I'm curious about what people think of the proportions. The idea is that hes so baggy that the skin hangs down over the hands a bit like long sleeves. About half his hands will be covered. Similar idea on the feet.... I'm also thinking about hanging a loose tongue down from behind the exposed upperjaw...
rendermonkey23
03-15-2002, 03:38 AM
well, I love the baggy skin idea (gonna be tough though). I really like the proportions because it fits the style your goin for. Love the horns. Style :) I like the little head. Not to sure about the tounge idea (ewwwww :) ). Ummm.... looks good. Just go :)
urgaffel
03-15-2002, 03:51 AM
It's looking great! And I like the concept, it's a lot more original than the standard fare "SuperMuscledÜberDemonOverLordWithWingsAndShit" :)
Btw, won't it be a little tricky to skin it later? With the arms being so close to the stomach I mean...
If you animate him/her/it, you HAVE to have some kind of flex on the folds. Just imagine that lump of lard and skin wobbling around... That would be so cool/horrible http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Please, for the love of gods and demigods and demons and all the rest, finish the modeling, texture it and animate it!
Mike RB
03-15-2002, 08:21 AM
It shouldnt be a problem to skin it. I'll make sure I show how I do it. :)
I am trying to think of different ways to do the fat jiggle... ill do some tests...
Facial Deluxe
03-15-2002, 12:08 PM
Absolutely wonderfull !
Can't wait to see it finished and rigged. Will you apply some kind of "inertia" or "lazy point" to make the flesh jiggle ?
Martin-K-
03-15-2002, 02:00 PM
its fairly simple to setup the arms like that. just define the points for the stomach area...and hide those polys...so you only see the bones and arms...and apply the arm polys to the arm bones.....then you hide the arms and apply the stomach polys to the body bones.
or you could also always just rotate the bones so you get the bubblegum effect, and then manually reassign the verticies to their proper bones. and they should just snap right back into place.
and initialize the skeleton into its bind pose or something.
there are so many ways of going about this.

Max's solution is not so graceful. i am going to have to use the flex modifier to creat a sort of psuedo-soft bodies. We have reactor here at the office, but it tends to confuse me :)

Just a quickie to max users: if you want to do flabby stuff, use mesh select with soft selection turned on together with flex.
Mesh Select -> select vertices, turn on soft selection, adjust the values to your liking -> apply flex and tweak to get suitably flabby effects. (It updates in real time too)
Sorry about that Mike, I'll go back to lurking now :)
(Really really looking forward to the finished ver of this creature. It's mah favorite so far :)

Yes, its a baked vertex map, there are no UV's involved. Its doing per vertex shading like old video games did, except that his cage is hirez enough that it looks super smooth.... You can also blend this shading with normal texture maps...

quick question how do you get smoothing to work so well when you have 3 and five sided polygons?
do tell please because I always end up with the good ole blank spaces and a message saying lightwave cant smooth them.
this is of course assuming you smooth by hitting tab and using the tab nurbs things.
thanks man

MSF: actually i have my alert level set to expert, so it smooths everything and makes the holes around the 5 sided but dosent tell me or bug me about it. As i've been going ive been cleaning all the 5 sided into 3 and 4 sided, there are almost non left, and by the time in done there wont be any. For the GI test ones I just quickly tripled all >4 sided

That edgetool plug is indispensible.
I havent updated becasue of a project I need to get done. But hopefully I'll be able to get back to him soon.

I work with Mike, and as I plan on entering the competition (time permitting, the co has a big secret project coming up!) I will have to break his hands (and feet, in case he tries for that disabled artist angle ;) ) in order to win :D
Looking good! I gotta check out that avi...

WAiiioooh Mr Mike, thats a nice modeling skill you've perform there, and innovative design too...
(from my open minded thought), I cant wait till you reach the rigging part, I am currently rigging a single skin character and am having problems with deformation, I hope your's go well, so maybe you can help me out a bit with some tutorials or two :)
keep the good mood flow :)
ps: I am using lw too, and i ve tried the weightmap

Really cool demon Mike. It reminds me of one of the Chaos demons/gods from the Warhammer table top war games. :)

Really nice character. The bone structure isn't easily identified when solid shaded. This model will look even better when textured. (even though that's beyond the scope of this contest)
And thanks for bringing to our/my attention Edgetools. I'm a character modeler who was without this speed increasing plugin.
Keep it up.

this has prolly been said a thousand time already but..The model is totally flawless and the design is so cool!!
how you rigging going, prolly i find the belly area to be the hard part when animating big characters?
great work man! :)

Hey Mike, I was wondering if we were going to get an update soon? Looking forward to seeing the finished character and all the extras you have done to him, both accessories and the weighting stuff. Hope the "secret project" doesn't have you to tied up.

LOL this model is BRILLIANT!!!! Looks like a demonic Shrek heheheheheh....
Actually, I'm absolutely positive that this is one of history teachers from high school!!!!!! We used to put a glass of water on the desk and watch for the shaking water like in Jurassic Park!
Cool work :D

your concept reminds me a lot of the greater deamon or nurgle from warhammer/40k tho.

I don't know array, yes there both fat, but that war hammer is pretty little compared to this guy. Could be his little brother.

bah, i wish i could find a bigger picture, or one that is to scale. the greater deamon of nurgle is supposed to stand at least 10' tall.

Great work Mike,
I'm downloading the MD vid now. I'm still coming to terms with LW in general after a few years with other packages and it's work like yours that inspires.
As far as similarities to the warhammer thing...well, they're both demons but yours has got way more style.
Keep it up.
