Maya 7.0:
I am at the end stages where I have my character rigged and weighted and now I want to add some more bones, particularly a jaw bone and some ear bones [floppy earred critter]. I fear its too late though. Ugh! Is it possible to add bones at this stage? If so, how would I go about doing this?

Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi, Ollie_T

In maya there is a option under edit smooth skin Add influense

Just create a bone where u want and add influense but check the options

check the box Lock weights.

that's it

I have done this and although it works well, the weights on the new Jaw bones seem to be locked. Any suggestions why i cannot paint new weighting information onto the newly added bones? The holds are off in the Paint Weights attributes editor but they show up in there leading me to belive it all works out fine, so I don't know why this may be happening.

All I want to do is paint the jaw area weight to be influnced by the new bones but I cannot. Any ideas of advice would be greatly appracted.

Thanks again!

Michael Comet has some Mel Sripts on his home page (http://www.comet-cartoons.com), that might save you, but generally speaking you did a really big "booboo". But itīs nice to see, that you guys in California are struggling with the same problems as us liīl ole Europe!

Cheers

Thanks for the Comet Tools suggestion, dunkelzahn. Very much appreciated. He is a guru, isn't he.

I have learned that my problem is likely Locked influences. When I added the influence object [new jaw bones], i had this option checked as sreedhar3d recommended. But now when I go to edit the weights, they remain locked.

Any suggestion how I unlock the weighting in the "Paint Skin Weights" tool attribute settings?

Have a look at your geometries skin cluster. There is an option called "Maintain Max influences". This controls how many joints may influence your geometry. If your additional influence doesnīt fit in there, then your weightings are locked. Either deactivate the tag or raise the number of max influences, eh?

Hope that worked

Chris
