View Full Version : Problem with reflection map

I'm still working on finishing up last months unofficial challenge. I've gotten to the reflection map stage and I'm not so sure if I'm applying it correctly.

TwinsinDude says "Go to your material attribute editor and scroll down to reflection color. Click the map button (the checkered one on the right) and scroll down to environmental textures."

I see no checkered map button or anyting about environmental textures so I just decided to put it in reflection maps bitmap texture space. Max's help file mentions 3 types of reflection maps:
basic reflection map
automatic reflection map
flat-mirror reflection map

I came across none of these which leads me to believe I have the texture in the wrong space.

So I have a few questions. Did I apply the map correctly? If so, my map is ignoring the opacity channel. Can I fix this?

What is better to use, a speherical map or a cubic map.

Does my map have to be the same size as my other texture sheets?

Do you have comments on the chrome? reflection map is applied to the whole model now, I will fix that later. The parts that shouldn't be reflective are the tire, seat, and wire. I'm just trying to get my chrome levels set cause I'm really psyched to see this baby finally. I don't think they look very good.

when you assign a reflectionmap do the following.

-go to the refection slot in the material editor, assign a bitmap.

-in the bitmaps preferences sheet (where you have the root, and filtering preferences) at the top there should be a pulldown menu, change that from object based uvw to world UVWS
render.

-to get the opacity you have to insert a mask modifier above the reflection map in the material editor, then use the opacity map as your mask.

hope thats correct and helps, as i am at work now so i cant check

Thanks for writing. I thought this thread was going to slip by everyone. I got the mask working, thanks a lot for that.

As for the reflection, I think it's applied right. I was looking for pulldown menu you mentioned. I never found it, but right where I thought it would be I had the option to select texutre or enviornment. Enviornment was already checked and had specherical in the box next to it.

I tried selecting texture and rendered the different options. None of them felt as good as what I originally had, but you see it. Is that on there wrong? Here is an image with no diffuse and 100 reflection. Keep in mind my spherical map is just a panaorama I found of some chinese city on google image search.
