Well I have been sick again this week, still not well actually. I wonder why I'm having so many health problems this year. The healthier I live, the sicker I get... bah
I haven't done a lot this week so here are some doodles and sketches I did at the office...
I've a lot less work to do lately so instead of browsing the internet I decided to do more sketching whenever I can (I hope my bosses don't read this)

Inspiring to see your experiments with all the different medias and subjects, some results are really amazing and I especially love your ballpen studies:thumbsup: . great job on the Joker, Johan, I am really loving this one... I might play down the detail on the gums above the upper teeth because I think they're distracting a bit from the teeth themselves, which are wonderfully done...

Hi Del, thanks for the crit on the gums... I've lowered the value of the gums for now... not very sure what to do with them actually but will see soon when I start coloring...
Here's an update... worked a lot on the hair... much trial and error stuff... I wanted it messy but not too distracting, not sure about it at all really... think I might end up adding more highlights as I progress on the piece... I'm expecting a lot of corrections to be made to the values when at the coloring phase... oh well, will see...
My pc almost cracked up on me yesterday when I tried to update my WinXP to SP3. Fortunately I was able to fix it (took me less time than expected actually).
It has to hold until next summer though... can't afford a new machine now.
School again tomorrow... can't wait!!

Well, from now on it will be life drawing from 18h30 until 22hr every Monday and Tuesday until June next year :)
And I can tell ya it is bloody well needed! Last night was a disaster :eek:
I will see if I can arrange to go on Wednesday and/or Thursday if I can squeeze it in...but I won't be able to do this too often or my girlfriend will put the frying pan on my head in a rather unpleasant way ^^

So it looks like I have lost all sense for proportion, form and light... well perhaps that's a bit exaggerated, but after week 1 I had this fealing I haven't made improvement for the last 6 months or so and I have to be careful not to even go backwards...

All my A3 sized drawings are not actually A3. I always have the employee at the art store cut off 3cm off the bottom to have a less horrible ratio.

I have been searching to find all the info about Leonardo Da Vinci and his work as an engineer. I am particularly interested in his vehicles and machines. However, I have not been very successful in my search so far. So if anyone know a book that describes his flying machines, war machines etc in detail, preferrably a large sized book, please post.
Most books about da Vinci focus on his paintings and anatomy studies.
PLEASE? A title of a book or an author could get me going.
This is extremely important to me and any help is highly appreciated!
On a side note, it seems one of my DSF entries from a few weeks back was selected as sketch of the day. Pretty cool! but it's probably because there weren't too many entries heh.

And I was just going to ask you when will we be able to see your life drawings and here they are. Some more Hogarth'ish approach might help you with those. By that I mean giving some crisper edges where the form turns. Sort of like in Hogarth's sketches where he goes with drawings all those boxy shapes. Just a suggestion.

I can't say I know of anything specifically dedicated to Da Vinci's engineering, but there's a huge book called Leonardo's Notebooks that covers most everything Leonardo ever wrote, including some of his ideas for machines.
Great life drawings, mate! It'll be interesting to see what your pages look like at the end of the class when compared to these first poses. Who is your instructor, and do they have a website or anything we could look at?

Biggest book in my personal home library, and one of the best...no paintings...just tons of his drawings... lots of machines, and inventions..architecture perspective drawings.....ect. ect. ect...all enlarged, so you can really see all the details clearly....:)
I think it's the book that you are looking for, and is the one that you will benifit the most from in your current studies..:)
I like your latest studies...and also agree with RAZZ....Use the side of the conte crayon for your strokes...gives you that crisp edge with a soft blend extending away from it..which creates the tonal planes and values...Burne Hogarth never used the tip/point of the crayon, until the very end, and then only to create an accent line to clarify an edge.

Thanks for the tip, I actually know this (Glenn has mentioned it numerous times already :blush: ) but it's hard to achieve... technically... well only one thing to do... practice hard.
Since you and Glenn advise me the same book, it's the one I will get. Not just yet, because I just paid the bill for 3 Jason Chan videos (http://dvd.massiveblack.com/downloads.html#chan3), Bold Visions from Gary Tonge and Mechanika from Douh Chiang. I'm getting aweful looks in my direction from my gf each time the VISA bill arrives WOOPS! I tell ya, if I were rich, I would buy hundreds of books... wouldn't know which one to read first heh.

Birds are one of my favourite kind of animals... not only can they fly, but the way they are constructed by mother nature in order to achieve this.... it's just amazing!!
Well, just uploaded my Joker Self Portrait in my portfolio.
It's not perfect (far from) but it's time to move on...
This started as a quick sketch for the Daily Sketch Forum, but things got outta hand :p
Used a mirror and this one picture I found on internet of the Joker sitting in jail. Practicing facial expressions, hair and light with this one. It took me quite some time to finish it so my cheeck muscles are a bit stiff by now lol
Painted in Painter IX.5, added some noise in GIMP.
I may color it at some point... we'll see...

You have here some interesting new stuff.
The seagull study is very nice. And so are the life study, I especially like the ones in blue pen.
The Joker self-portrait is very weel done too, I'm not sure about this but I think a little more light in the neck could improve it a litle because right now it somewhat seems that the face is floating...

the fifth of today's last batch stands out as quite beuatiful to me.
The second and the third one of the first life drawing post are quite out of proportion, aren't they? Must be hard to get these things right in a limited timeframe.
P.S.: sixth and seventh of the last batch also rock... mind numbering these? Easier to refer to them then.
Yes, YES!! Life drawing! I like your control of the line. You don't do any scribbly, unnecessary lines, but go with a confident line describing the form, great to see. I want to point to the website of Scott Burdick (http://www.scottburdick.com/2004scott9.htm) (once again) to look at those amazing quick life drawings. I think you should try different approaches. It's a good thing to know several ways to approach a drawing, this way you're able to adjust to the situation and use what fits it (lighting, pose, you name it) the best.
Well I think you knew that already :)
What is it that you're mainly trying to improve with these life drawings? Any one particular area? Linework, shading,..?

I think your drawings are progressively looking more confident. I say not worry about too much, relax and have fun! Great shading on the legs on the last ones. They remind me of your ballpoint pen drawings from a while ago which I also liked very much. Keep it up,

Nice life drawings, I see lots of progression from last year! I think you may be making the heads a bit small in some of them... which can be an issue if you're using the head as a measurment to set your proportions... I love the shading and you've got a good grasp of the forms!

nice sketches in last spam- the higher parts of the body you have a master(when it comes to anatomy)..I think that you need to spend a little more time to draw LEGS (with the rest of the same goes for me :] ).

For now, I am mainly thinking about form as I draw... just trying to think 3D when sketching and shading... and trying to get as much on paper as possible without losing too much accuracy/proportion.

Well I was physically so exhausted this week that I haven't drawn much at all. I tried finishing this book I was reading on Dali, but I gave up on it. Will pick it up again from the library later. So yesterday, in an attempt to get back on track, I bought 2 books: One on Van Gogh and -more importantly for me at this stage- a dutch translation of the book Glenn has advised me. It has instantly become one of the favourite books I have.
Everything I have learned about drawing in the last 3 years is in it and loads and loads more. I think EVERY artist should have this book.
It's called Leonardo Da Vinci - Notities. The english version can be found on Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leonardos-Notebooks-Leonardo-da-Vinci/dp/1579124577/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222017460&sr=8-6). Mind ya though that it is 18GBP on Amazon but I bought it for 8Euro's (that's about 5 USD) in a store in town. So it might be wise to check your local bookstore first.
Anyway, had to get back into it after not having drawn for 4 days (argh I am such a slacker!), so here is a warmup quicky search for cloth wrinkles and some crappy leg anatomy refreshing (I know about the foot)...
I can't go to school tomorrow evening because my gf has driving lessons and I have to babysit the kids...

Man, fabric is tough, no? It looks pretty good, though. Looks kind of like some old French fashion art. But I just don't really understand the folds she's got in her hand. I can't tell if she's holding a satchel or if it's part of the skirt. Was this from your head or reference?

And I can't believe you found Leo's Notebooks for 8 Euros. It costs like 30+ dollars in stores here in the states. =/

It was a really quick sketch after a fashion image in one of my girlfriends magz (5 min maybe)
I've been wanting to do wrinkle pattern studies for a long time now (ever since I read Burne Hogarth's book on it) but just not getting to it... my "things to study" list is sooo immensely long OMG and I'm stuck here at the office again... the calculator is on the desk, waiting to have it's ugly buttons pressed by me... I feel this pain in my arm... it doesn't want to but my brain is forcing it towards the darn machine.... ARGH... a quick look at the clock tells me it's 06:26hr. Only 7 hours and 40 minutes to go. Then I can go home, do the normal things a family man like me loves to do... pick up the kids from school, help them with their homework, feed them and relax watching them play... :)

well - I noticed that some of your latest life drawing figures are pretty slim - are the models also like that? or - perhaps a little bit more volume on their arms and legs might be a good idea .. (?)
and your joker - wow! what a nicely detailed piece! the only crit I might have in this case is that I would suggest perhaps a bit "exposure" correction (the image seems a bit too dark to me, all those great details are kind of lost there, arent they? .. )
anyway, great job - and really nice work with a volume/shading in some of your life drawings!

Congrats on getting the da Vinci book. I have a different one published by Taschen, but I think it is similar to yours. It has pictures of various drawings he did, figure/anatomy, landscape, perspective, mechanical design, etc., all very inspiring stuff.

I was waiting for someone to ask about the model being slim... She is what we call "vel over been" in dutch, which means "skin over bones"... in other words very skinny. She does have a bit of a tubby though.
The last post has some sketches of a "not so skinny" model (the one with the ponytail), but the first few weeks we only had this one, skinny model.
heh when I see some sketches from other people I always feel so small... I've been searching for a certain degree of sketching routine for quite a few months but I just don't draw enough. I guess that would only be possible when drawing 5, 6 hours a day, every day. (Damn I hate my office job, it's such a waste of time :banghead: )
So, last night, even though I am sick again (I lost count, this year has been an absolute hell for me, healthwise and the worst thing is the doctors can't find what's wrong with me)
I decided to go to school anyway.
Warmed up with charcoal quickies but they really aren't worth posting so here are some 40min studies in ballpen
Would have needed a lot more time to be able to bring enough volume in there!

Ouch, man. I hope your good days are great, and your bad days are always less painful than the one before.
The ballpoint pen studies are RAD, dude. Those legs really look incredible. I really enjoy the torso drawing, too. Especially the curve of her belly accentuating the slouch. You captured that ribcage curve so nicely. :) Only thing that gets me is the neck. There is a curved line above her left collar bone (right side of the page) that separates a shaded area from the white of her neck that makes me look at her neck like it's super thick.
But that's one little nitpick, man. Again, I really love what you've done with these drawings. Great lighting and form and everything, dude. :D :D

The ballpen studies are beautiful. I love the shading on the thigh/leg and the gesture/energy in the last nude study is stunning! Stun-ning! Complete this! Or take it as the starting point for an elaborate painting!

Hey Johan, thanks for the welcome back.. come for a browse round this thread after so long is a treat! Loving the ballpoint studies.. you're much braver than I am, still not got the guts to use ink yet. The knees on the leg studies look great and I love all the lumps and bumps on the feet, really gives them character. The longer sides of the body such as the arms and legs look a little too one strokish.. and I only pick up on that as I tend to do it myself, something I'm going to try and adjust with more life drawing. The cross hatching is lovely where it follows the form of the body (such as the thighs) but it's kind of inconsistent in whether it follows the forms or not, I think that would realy bring the figure to life for you.

Your Joker Self Portrait is indeed very creepy! :) You have come a long way in the last year. Great work on the ballpoint pen studies – nice confident lines and cross hatch shading!
Sorry to hear you've been getting sick a lot this year. I know it's such a pain. My immune system's also been pathetic this year and I'm quite sure it was due to stress and lack of sleep while I was studying. I hope you feel better and work out the cause so you can avoid it! I'm a vitamin junky at the moment - I'll let you know if that works. ;)

Well... several weeks when I last updated... had a bit of a rough time, like every fall, but that's all passed now so getting back into it.
I was drawing way below my level lately so there is a lot of struggling and searching going on when I draw these days... it's on the better hand now though.

Here's a selection of quick sketches made at work:
This is a quick sketch made to capture the idea and perhaps work out as a painting. It's about kids being killed in a hit and run. This happens so often here it is really shocking. I cannot believe how someone could just drive off after hitting someone with their car...
I'm really worried about these things so I'd like to paint it, display it and hope it makes people aware of the danger that traffic is to all of us. Imagine it happened to one of your loved ones :(
I know this sketch has many issues. The woman in particular. I want to lower the viewing point to increase the drama to start with. any other ideas are welcome!
We were talking about a fly that was bothering us at the office. The day before, there had also been a fly, but we had let that one out of the window, so we ended up laughing about taking today's fly as a pet... I was gesturing like I was walking it out on a leach, which triggered this idea. Come to think of it, I think I saw a painting of a girl walking out a dragon a long time ago, but I cannot remember the artist or anything...

you second last nude study looks really nice! It has a lot of expression! And I like the dragon pet, it looks very cool.
Great update, Johan! The different mediums you draw with and the different subjects you draw is exciting to see. You seem to be doing it all, refed, life, imaginational drawings. Cool.
About the piece you're doing for the danger of traffic, I would paint it somehow different. I mean, this kind of drawing reminds me of movies where a hero (or whatever) holds someone dead in his/her hands and shouts "noooo!!" while the camere goes up in the air showing the scene from the top. Just saying that if you wouldn't have tolds what the drawing is about, I wouldn't have known/understood. But that's just me!
Then again, painting a really grotesque scene might not be good also, but it should be something that would really get stuck in your head for some time. Try thumbnailing different ideas. You know, the first one is usually not the best one ;]
Oh, I've ordered Mechanika, so I'll join you with drawing mechanical stuff when it arrives, hehe.

This girl in a uniform is...wow!:thumbsup: Did you use ref or drawn from imagination? The cloth folds are great!
The dark-light quality from the previous sketch is also very nice!
Suggestion about the woman with the kid: From what I can understand, you tried to capture the scene from above. You could make reference perspective lines and place the figures with boxes and basic shapes, inside. Then you could add details.

perfectly right about the hit and run piece. Will have to dig a lil deeper into it to get that right starting sketch. My initial thought was to have a low viewing angle because it would emphasize the child. I intend to make it quite shocking, really, but anywayz... it's like a good stew that needs to be cooked long enough te get a good result :)
Mechanika is a nice book, but as with most books, those workflow descriptions only really help if you are already skilled enough.

Thanks. Actually, compared to the charcoals on big paper, these quick warmup sketches are a lot more lively I think. I like them too, dispite the usual weaknesses like proportions etc.

My favorite one is the last! Very interesting white-gray-dark combination!
One comment for the first two: try not avoid drawing hands and feet. It might be the most difficult part, but it's a good practice for sure. If you don't have enough space to draw them on the figure, try and draw them larger on a paper corner, and then when you have understood their gesture, draw them more abstract.

GREAT FLOW and LINE with that pen work..Maybe try red ink pen and really sharpened to a fine point pastel pencils..maybe even combine them in the same figure study..you might get a really nice result...Just a passing thought.. Burne Hogarth showed me some of his note books when I was taking his class years ago...Most of his drawings were in red pen if I remember right, or pastel pencil..it was one of the two anyway.
The red linework gave the drawings a really nice feel..had alot to do with the color red....I think it has a way of evoking energy, in the veiwers eye, and also in the artist that is drawing with it...just a thought.

Heh ballpen is my favourite medium. I have some bad habbits with pen though like screwing up the eyes in portraits (just take a look at the portrait below and you'll see)
I love the female body hehe, but to be honest I wouldn't mind a male model in class every now and then either.

GREAT updates...I really like those feet studies..especally the second one.
On your faces..it's a good idea to really get the eye socket bone structure in place and refined as much as possible first..shadows ect.,..Then concentrate on the eye lids, tops, and then especally the bottom ones...Then put the eyeballs in there last..consentrating on the shadows.
That red one is GREAT..nice MOOD/FEELING..:)
If you are able to, get the book...THE ARCAHE EYE OF BURNE HOGARTH...It's full of his red drawings..might give you alot of ideas and inspiration..GREAT BOOK...FULL OF HIS SKETCHES AND PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON LIFE AND ART:)
I bought it awhile back and got it out to see some of those red drawings that I mentioned to you earlier...Some of the ones I saw years ago in his small sketchbooks are in there..was nice to see them again..:)

I would pretty much have to agree that the last sketch is right on. I really like big hands on a model and these are very expressive. Also the shape of the legs are great and the whole figure seems in balance. The only thing I can see is the upper arm muscle looks a bit symetrical, even though it is only a sketch the concave shape on the under part would be slid lower down on the arm I think.

This started as a study of the cover of IFX 35 (an army babe), but I quickly started experimenting with her appearance... so I decided to make her a princess (of persia?)
And a doodle, which I tried to make more interesting in Painter yesterday, but failed miserably, so just posting this thingie:

Now, you'll have to finish that sci-fi piece, you know that? Do look closely how Doug Chiang's finished paintings look in his book. See how you don't need to nitpick every little detail with great precision. Just saying this so you wouldn't spend twenty hours on that piece, instead of that do five more :) Also I suggest you look at other sci-fi pieces as well. Feng Zhu, Ryan Church, Syd Mead, Scott Robertson - take a look at their work.
For speedpaints like that, try blending the tones you've put on. It's a great way to paint with color dabs like that. Playing with the edges will help push those pieces forward.
Great to see more digital stuff from you. Please continue like that!

Good studies. Love that you keep it going, learning all the time.
Makes me want to jump into simple quick studies, too. Too much going outside and inside my head, tho. Waiting to clear space.
All your figure work is getting stronger. Try to always incorporate the longest line to your figures wherever that is, whether model is sitting or standing. Build the forms off this line. It will help maintain cohesiveness to your entire figure. It is a gesture line in initial stage, also could be the plumb of the weight from head to feet.
I'm applying this very thing into my own work. My stuff looks awful, as I get used to another concept, but, I know it will ultimately make my work that much more solid.
Please don't stop your explorations. They are inspiring.

Hi Johan, nice to see you working from imagination; an essential exercice to devellop ideas! The digital paintings seem to lack a bit of depth imo; you should try to get the form to read befor you add the details. But it isn't easy for that last reference pic, becaus the contrasts are very subtle. Anyway: good studies for the rest. I hope you devellop that scifi-drawing some more: it looks promissing!

Accuracy wasn't my biggest concern here (although it always is to a certain degree). I was more trying to experiment with brushes and strokes. Not yet coming to layer modes but perhaps soon I will. Anyway, learning heaps with each one...

First of all, huge thanks for the link to that photographer. Lots of good refs for me. I want to take oils out for studies like this last one of yours or the other two posted before.
I think the problem with the lighting is more in the reference than in the study. But despite that, those are some damn great looking photos that are asking to be painted even though It's a big challenge. I'd choose something more like THIS (http://www.pbase.com/mitchellk81/image/58838352) or THIS (http://www.pbase.com/mitchellk81/image/60333593) or maybe THIS (http://www.pbase.com/mitchellk81/image/92385693) if I wanted something more than one figure.

I have to say that some people [even a professionals from poland and abroad] told me that "Man I wish to had just a bit of your skill, when I was in your age." At all, they are great and awesome artists right now, so this was just making me frustrated, like - "What are you talking about!? It's just a little crap..." :D
Heh, BTW I've heard that the moments of frustrate and being not so sure about your possibilities and skill was a good symptoms, signs.
Even Leonardo said that artist isn't reaching anything, when he never felt resignated and unsure.
So thanks, and nice last painting, I think that only the guy is too lower than the, um, 'chair' you told that accuracy wasn't the thing that you was looking for at this piece, but it's just my few words about the work.

I do have many issues with painting still... color, I've only started studying it since 6 months ago or so... and not even all that much... I should do hundreds, if not thousands of studies if I really want to understand light and how it affects color. You're right, a sb with only life drawings or pencil sketches is impressive when each drawing is impressive... which can't be said in this case...you'd have to go to something like Esmeralda's sb. I'm not setting any standards here, nor do I intend to... this is just sort of a diary of my learning process throughout the years. I'm glad you and others are still interested in it's content. I'll try to keep it more varied.

Warmups... I think I'll always have proportion issues during warmups... but I guess that's why we do them... to get our eyes adjusted by the time we start the longer studies.

Still haven't found a good red ballpen that's not too greasy
Problem with this medium is that it is very soft, yet very greasy and sticky, almost like an oil pastel, but a lot softer. So when ya sharpen it in a point, it loses it's sharpness very quickly. This makes it hard to set some accents at the end

Nice studies there...I really like that second red one.
You might try using just a regular red ink BIC pen, or a red ink fine line ball point pen of your choise,..to get your outter linework done first, then go into it with the softer red pencil to get your shading.
The oily pencil shouldn't affect the ink linework that you start with.
You can always wet the tip of your thumb with some spit, and rub in, blend and soften some of the edges, and interior forms ...I've gotten some really nice atmospheric effects doing that..A little spit can go a long ways in adding depth, air, and unity to your drawing..It will also join the ink and pencil mediums, making them appear as one medium.
Sometimes, there is nothing more sensitive and accurate at/in acheiving the result that your after, than the tip of your own thumb and fingers.

These last red ones aren't ballpen Magda. I was using this aquarel pencil because I still didn't find a decent red ballpen. Most pens I try are too greasy and for a lefty like me are a real pain because I wipe over my drawing and woosh... stained. I should have mentioned which medium I used.
I'm too scared to wipe them with spit & thumb (or water and a brush)! I know I should but I like the result when using this aquarel pencil dry so much that I chicken out when I get to the phase to wash it... one day I'll do it! :blush:

So Razz, I ought to thank you as well coz I sat down this weekend with my old buddies Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett and Norah Jones and did the Indian man. I started with the entention to spend 2, 3 hours on it but I ended up taking it all the way... about 8 or 9hrs on and off during the weekend. Had an AWESOME time with this one!!

Well now, just when I finished writing the reply, my computer decided to crash...
Was just saying that you did an amazing job on the last painting, but you should know that already. Don't know how it looked after 2-3 hours but I like the way it looks now. It's a tricky thing to know when to stop. I've Richard Schmid's paintings in his book, where he stopped at the very beginning, just after the block in with oils. And as he doesn't start every painting in the same way, those were very interesting to look at and really more work might've even taken away the beauty.

Your figure sketches are really good, It really looks like you're comfortable with form and your contour lines look clean and well placed. I'd like to see more faces though, I always struggle putting together all the features in correct proportion...

GREAT JOB on those charcoals, ..Looks like you are getting more relaxed using them..:thumbsup:
You might think about getting some really loose broad and powerful strokes around the figures, to give the page more depth and atmosphere..That will really make your figures pop out, and stand out on the page..will also enhance the composition..:) Think of the entire page as a whole piece of well designed and defined composition.:)

I'm working on it. Need to practice these soft media more, they aren't my cup of tea... or at least that's how I feel at the moment. Perhaps it'll be better in a year or 2 :)
This week's been a really busy one... we've been redecorating the place, setting up new furniture, getting rid of the old stuff, re-arranging etc... bleh not too much time to paint.
Started something I wanted to do 2 years ago already though:
Plan is to create 3 paintings of my children (one of each) and print them on canvas at 25cm x 50 cm.

Here's some of last week's screw-ups in pencil I hadn't posted yet - lots of proportional and other issues, but I thought I'd post them anyway, even if it's just to remind me of the errors I made :eek:
This week I thought I'd experiment a bit...
Steadler 0.5mm blue marker (the tip of the red one broke off during the first gesture sketch! )
And from life
Blue Aquamonolith Pencil from Cretacolor, with 0.5mm Staedtler pen where used dry.
The others are washed with water and my left thumb (thanks Glenn, your comment a few posts back pushed me to do this, and I'm really happy I did)

experimentation is good,but watch out for the loss of strokes.
in your previous post the sketches didnt had a strong distinctive line..you can look at this way.if you were an animator and you had to clean up this drawing you wil not know which line to pick from those..(you can try tracing them after a gap of 4-5 days or week)
be fearless..let them screw up...it wont happen after 5-6 sheets in a row(at max.)
in the new sketches, i lik what you came up with but i would suggest concentrating on the primary purpose of those studies..you can render how you want it definatly but if the figure doesnt come out the way you want it to then even the best rendering wont help.

I'm not sure if I understand exactly what you mean?
A while ago, Esmeralda (AztcFireFlower) advised me to always look for the longest line in the figure. Perhaps this is what you mean? If so, I understand what you mean, because I keep failing to find this longest line :)
If this is not what you meant, can you give me some visual examples please?
That being said, one of my main focusses lately is trying to be less dependant of line. My teacher told me a few weeks ago that I have to be careful not to make it an exercise in filling in (like a childrens coloring book).
Trying to let go and have no fear of screwing up is also one of the things I am working on. (Apparantly not having much success yet hehe)
I do feel I am making a tiny bit of progress on that matter though since the proportional issues are becoming less important to me (or is this just sloppiness??)
I consider the last ones (the watercolor pencil ones) as a personal success, simply because I have used this medium dry for quite a few times already but always had the fear of screwing up the drawing when washing them. Now I finally was able to dare doing this. A lot of the figure's "substance" got sort of lost while washing them with my thumb, so I tried to put some accent on forms with line afterwards.

glad you got most of what i was saying ,rest i guess i wasnt clear enough.my bad. i'l explain it again.
in 2D animation,when the key animator draws he makes very rough shots which are usually lik gesture sketches, capturing the idea.after that, its the job of clean up artist,to give them the look you see on tv(talking about lineart only)
now if we take your statue study sketches as those key poses and tell a clean up artist to finalise it, he can hav problems because there are multiple strokes for everything and since they are of same strength(means darkness/lightness) he cant choose the right one.so it causes needless delay.So, at this level i will suggest that you start using pencil more and take advantage of its variation instead of pen.to remove your fear..do as much gesture sketching as possible(subway/cafe/bus etc) with blunt pencils. it'l reduce the number of lines and increase stroke confidence.when this is done using pen will as easy as pencil
see some studies of glen keane (http://theartofglenkeane.blogspot.com/2006/06/women.html) .notice the places where there are multiple strokes.there some strokes are darker then other and are very less in number(try seeing them in thumbnails too).i hope im able to make things clear this time.if not let me know i'l b back :surprised
It's indeed easier with a blunt pencil to add weight and movement. I'll keep working on my contrast, lineweight and flow. I'm kind of a slow learner so pls bear with me (it might take me a couple of years ;) )
It's hard to find a balance between stroke economy and feeling the form while drawing (on these quick statue gestures in blue 0.5mm pen for example, I estimate about 40 to 60% of the lines are drawn while looking at the statue, not the paper. It's me feeling the form, searching for that edge of the form, almost touching it in my mind)
But there's no need to deny that I should sketch a lot more... :cry:

Those last ones where you did it, look GREAT..:applause:
That is the way you learn how to paint....using edge, light, and atmosphere, with a minimum amount of line, of which is an abstraction unto itself..When you see a figure in real life..where is the line,..there is no line,..there is only form/volume in space, defined by edge, light, shadow and atmosphere.
Line is an abstract form of art, which becomes very evident the minute you pick up a paint brush and start to paint the form..you don't paint line, you paint form..and you can't paint between the lines like a child does in a coloring book, if you don't use line to begin with.
There is a big difference between drawings/renderings, sketches/abstractions, and paintings...The age of photo's and what is perceived as reality have blurred that difference, but that difference is still a reality none the less..:)

Nice work sir, but I tend to like your pen gestures more than your charcoal. There are some anatomical discrepencies, but you are learning rather well and rather quickly. you sometimes seem to lose the dynamics of the pose, once you start to render it. I think that some tend to turn out a bit flat. I would continue trying to work on as many gestures as you can. I think that it will help in your final piece. I often will lose the gesture in my work, once I start to fall into the details, if I am not careful. I think that they are coming along well though. Keep up the good work. :)

Your pencil and pen sketches are really good! I like those a lot, the anatomical discrepancies don't bother me because the pose/line is so strong in those. I think some of the other stuff (charcoals, wet media) get a little indistinct...
And I love where you're going with your child's portrait! Very sweet, and colors are working well. I need to paint my kids one day, in all my free time :)

I'm quite busy lately... I try to be a dedicated father as well and I am teaching my gf to drive, which is taking a considered amount of my free time because she has a bad eye which makes it really hard for her to estimate distances, speed, etc.
She won't be getting her license before next summer, that's how hard it is for her... but she'll succeed if she keeps practicing every day.
Sometimes I have some time to sketch at the office, which makes it an ok job I guess (even though I'm totally not interested in finance BUEEK)

I like the colors, mate. :) Indeed, as everyone has discussed, value is the issue here... it might be an idea to throw the light that's currently on the background to the left, and put the darker value behind the face, in order to make the focal point pop. This way you'll have a light face over a dark bg, and a lighter bg behind the darker headgear. Charcoal artists do this a lot to great effect. Just a thought. :D

Wow, I like this last study of yours! Nicely done. What I'd like to see is some more visible brushwork, but that's just totally me. It's just good when one can simplify when looking at a pretty detailed subject, such as the bird with all it's feathers here. I find it very hard.
Good brushes that I've found to achieve a brush-like effect are Round Camelhair and Thick Wet Camel, both in Oils category. Those are great also because it's kind of hard to detail stuff with them because of how they behave small sized. Creates a very traditional look. Used them in my latest study after Sargent. You might just want to give them a try :)

I have a nesting pair of those in a huge old oak tree that overhangs the salt water marsh behind my house..I catch a glimpse of them once in awhile in the summer, as they dive into the water after the small fish that come in with the tide..Great sight and action to see happening...They are supper fast flying birds, and hit the water like a bullet..and come up with a fish in their beak without fail, just about every time..:)
Watch the composition on your piece...You have devided the image into halfs...Notice in the refference, how it's beak overshoots the halfway mark, putting something in the left half of the image, creating a ballance, so all of the weight and interest is not all on the right half of the image..Always think of the whole space...positive and negative space in your composition, and the way that it is devided...weight and ballance....flow and rhytum..:)
Would be interesting to see some water and reeds down below, on the left side, and merging into the right side in that image...Could create a circular flow in the composition..Just a passing thought..:)

Your astronaut brings to my mind an old astronaut left alone on a distant space station. Something like old SF stories, without hyper extra special effects but with a lot of space, stars, mystery and loneliness. I also keep thinking he is Russian man. I wonder what it will look like when you finish it :)

Here's a totally failed attempt at watercolors in Painter... the way the colors loose their vibrance once put on the canvas has really scared the hell outta me.. I can't use any value higher than the paper I use it on :argh:

The bird mood is a positive one :) I don't think it is failed attempt at all, very nice bird!
The only thing I see is your paper colour choice - I guess watercolours should be done on white paper. If one chooses another colour than dry brush or another brush type is a salvation for highlights - dry acrylics or oil pastels, something which covers the paper/background totally, just like you would do it on a real canvas. Watercolours never cover the paper in 100%, at least it's what I get from Painter, haven't used real ones in any real attempt since primary school and it's been a while since I've been there ;)
So I would use a light beige paper if I intended to paint only with browns and reds, adding highlights with pastels brush. I would use blue for night etc. But for painting with colours only white. Your choice made poor little birdie being exposed to bad, rainy weather. Again - I am not watercolours specialist, you've seen my Painter attempts, it's only what I would choose.
One more thing - paper texture - have you add it in the beginning or the end? I never worked it out in Painter, it always looks artificial to me and looks this way on your image. But in Art Rage paper texture chosen in the beginning works well, I've had it coming from under oils while painting, brush stroke after brush stroke, like it was real :)
I used the paper texture first in this case, but I think you can do it both ways in Painter. The advantage of doing it first is that you see the effect while you paint. If you do it afterwards it might be a bit of a "surprize" sometimes. I don't use it often though...
I realized it was the paper color/value that was causing my highlight values to be rather low, when I was writing my previous post :)
So here's a version with brightness/contrast boosted:

Yeah they don't show that often as they used to here (our cat even killed one last year omg) but when they do... I can totally forget about what I was doing and just watch em until they are out of sight...
So here's an update on that astronaut... I've been avoiding the face... will have to tackle it soon... I think the lighting is getting more consistent slowly... I dropped all layers at this stage btw... I can still add color later... wanna experiment with light and value first...
BTW, I ordered my new camera: a Nikon D60 + 18-55mm VR lens WOOHOO can't wait to get it:bounce:
Yeah, Johan, the birds are much looser and look nicer that way, for my taste anyway. Keep doing it and you'll have more and more stuff in those loose strokes. Reminds me I should do some studies from photos, need to see in a painterly way myself.
Mmm, Nikon D60, I was looking at an advertisement of that particular one just the other day. Though it would be nice to change my Nikon Coolpix L5, haha.
On this steampunk dude, I may suggest rotating the suit a bit towards the viewer, just a tad bit would help I think. Just so it wouldn't be in complete profile. By the way, watch your horizon line. It looks like we're looking at the face from the top, but it doesn't show in the suit.

Johan, Aah, a being after my own heart, I only use Nikons, or did. I have a dusty F5 that I love, but haven't had the occasion to use anymore, as film and developing takes time. I sooo want a Nikon Digital SLR, so I can use all my old lenses with.

Birds are the most amazing aviation experts. I am always enthralled when hummingbirds hang out in the yard. So, cute, so tiny! Sweet subject you have there.
I have a few questions for you:
What version Painter are you using? I now have a a grudge with Painter 9 as it completely corrupted a master copy I was so close to finishing. Still mad >:]
Love the brushes, hate the engine.
On the astronaut - Do you have one light source? You can strengthen the continuity in the face and body. If there is a reflected light as well, I think, one light should dominate, so it reads clearer. My thinking is to pick a strong light direction, and diffuse it as you need. I think it will help in defining the features and costume details.
An ex.: An overhead such as a skylight, can make your character's face dramatic without harsh shadows. Think Justin Sweet.
Am looking forward to seeing it turn out.

A new camera is very exciting. I got my first SLR a little while back and have been having a great time learning how to use it. Today I was a little overenthusiastic about getting a shot of a wedgetail eagle (which resulted in me landing on my butt in the dirt) - I couldn't believe there was an eagle flying around a suburban park!

Cute bird :) With the other one - the version with higher contrast has got better colours, but lost the rainy mood. You could do a mix of them - put the new on a layer over the old one and erase some parts. Not necessary to do it, though.
I agree on the astronaut to both comments - the suit doesn't follow body movement, too stiff, but then I think the head would be hid more inside, like under a stiff hood of a winter jacket.

The drawing course I follow at school is a 5 year education. First 2 years were basics and anatomy from plaster casts, from 3rd year on it is life drawing. Only traditional media are allowed. (I sense a certain amount of suspicion towards digital drawing and painting from my colleagues, especially if the subject is fantasy or scifi... some even laugh thinking "yeah right"... it's just a matter of educating them properly... which I will try to do in time LOL

There's no guarantuee that my children will keep drawing and painting as they grow up (although I would find it awesome). You see they only get 30min pc time on wednesdays and again during the weekend. Until recently they were playing some webbased games (like tetris etc) so I just told them that if they want to, they can also play a bit in Painter instead of playing games, which they seem to like (for now). There's no pressure whatsoever, if they rather play a game, that's fine by me, so we'll have to wait and see :)
Yes! Covered topics are very different. While Amber likes drawing sweet pets and animals she likes, Lars (although younger) seems to want to tell a story with his drawings... dragons spitting fire, an eagle making a vulcano burst lava,... I really envy these kids for their unlimited imagination!

I'm beginning to realize the power of this versatile tool. You can do anything with it, if you got the skills (LOL) I will use this more often because it will force me to create the illusion of detail, rather than actual detail. LOVE IT!

Lovely frog and drop of water. Illusion of detail, I like this idea. Got to try it, so far the only time I used this tool was making apple skin texture in ArtRage.

NR43- nice updates man, those are some lovely birds, great technique on the feathers. The frog piece is also well done, i've never used Painter, but that palette knife style is very appealing! As a small crit i would say maybe add a few hyper-details to the frog, since its such an up-close perspective on the skin and head.

You're absolutely right that I should not stick to reference images too closely... as I am really still in the beginning of my "color study phase" I am still trying to figure out the actual forms on the reference, rather than making them my own and/or adding and leaving out stuff as I please. I'm sure I will grow into that as I make more progress though... remember I am still a color noob :)
that's what it's all about mate... practice practice practice... I don't have to tell you that heh. It's really nice to hear I inspire people wow!

I just heard on the news that some sick @#&#§ has stabbed an adult and 12 children, aged between 0 and 3 years old, in a children's daycare centre in Dendermonde (a town in Belgium). The adult and 2 babies died, the other 10 babies are heavily injured but not critical. Authorities say he had his eyes made up all black and he may have been inspired by Heath Ledger's role as the Joker in the Dark Knight.
I am therefor deleting my "Self Portrait as the Joker" painting from all my online galleries (here and at DA) and I'm considering deleting it completely from my pc as well.
I am ashamed that I ever painted this and that I took such violent looking expression in a mirror so often as a reference.
Seriously, how sick can one be to kill innocent people, babies of all!!??
My thoughts go to the families of the victims.

Horrible news :( It's not the movie guilty, the stabber must be sick psychopath. He could as well paint his face red after some comic whatever. He just used decorations fitting his plan, but the evil idea was inside of him. I haven't seen the movie, only your artwork, but Batman movies are never serious ones. But I understand the way you feel, it's possible I would not want to wear such mask on my self-portrait, either.
While the news about gallery sound great, I hope you'll have exposure and sell prints. No experience to share, unfortunately.

.. yes, horrible things are happening .. and - unlike for the rest of us from outside the Belgium - most probably for you if feels much more intense, much more "real" than just like the "news" from tv .. and - I think I can understand your feelings concerning your own art too ...
neither I have seen the movie - but - I would like to second Sirielle - though movies may have for sure some influence to our lifes/feelings etc (yes, this is not easy topic at all, we could sure discuss if yes or no, or to what extent, under what circumstances etc ..) - but - in general - in my opinion - in the end of the day its not the movies themselves guilty, - what is wrong is some people´s mind, that is sick .. but - such sick people would get inspired with/by whatever anyway ...books, news, playing games, perhaps even by simple look into the kitchen fully equipped with knifes ... nothing can prevent sick mind from thinking (and unfortunatelly behaving) sick ...
the problem with movies - among the other "inspiration" - is just perhaps it is the easiest, or most comfortable, most accessible, etc .. way to "get inspired", if thinking this way ..
on the other hand - many up-to-date artworks and/or traditional great masters paintings depict violent looking expressions, violence, sorrow .. and all those bad things .. yes, it IS also a part of art - - and sure - it is a matter of choice - not only for viewers, but also for artists, what to prefer in our "artistic journeys" ..
though I would/will miss your joker-portrait ... (because for me it is but a pure piece of art, an admirable piece of art of someones/yours, as a result of dedicated effort to improve ones skills, to be better artist - especially if we are allowed to see/follow the foregoing process - which the art forums are for .. and for which reason we/I love it so much and for which reason we are here) .. at the same time - I can understand pretty well if you no more want to see/show that portrait of yours any more ..
whatever way you´ll decide in the end .. I wish your art could make your real life feel better, not worse ..

... i was at work when i heard that shocking news. Unbelievable! Like Alenah said i will miss your joker-portrait because it's just a wonderful piece and shows your dedication and great skills. Don't be ashamed that you ever painted it, it's not your fault that there are people out there who can't seem to see the difference between right/wrong real/unreal and do stuff that we just can't imagine.. But i can understand that you will remove it...
I wish you a lot of succes with selling your art to an art-gallery. Of course i have no experience with it at all :) But i think there's someone out here who has. So good luck!

yes it's sad that there are people that do not understand what is real and what is fiction.
These things are very shocking but there isn't much we can do about it, apart from being aware of what is going.
Personally, I think both tv media and parents should be well aware of the effect of everyday violence in the living room. Children get used to seeing it and it becomes harder for them to realize what is real and what is not. Perfect example is the attitude towards violence and nudity for example... a naked woman or man is the worst thing to show (while every child is born out of a woman's body), but you can buy a gun on every corner of the street. Here in Belgium, they made it harder to buy a gun by tightnening up the law, but as you see it isn't helping much. And whne you think of it, even a spoon can become a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands...
So this recent incident stimulated me to finish up the portrait of my youngest daughter. Even more because it allowed me to enjoy the peacefullness of the scene.
I dedicate this to every child in need!
Last week, after finishing that frog study with the palette knife, I opened up the latest saved file of this painting and it looked horribly flat and lifeless to me. I'm not that happy with the skintones of Inèz, but I'm quite pleased about how the cat turned out.

I chose a res this high because I wanted to print it on canvas. But I've decided not to.
Inèz has such beautiful eyes and they are closed on this painting.
So I'm just considering it another exercise and I plan to do many more portraits of my children. We (E and I) will then choose the best 3 and print those.

Was glad to hear about your work being printed and sold. You'll have to show us how it looks printed when you'll have one in your hands! I have a photo hanging in front of me that was printed on canvas, not the photo-paper that everyone's used to, which makes it look much nicer, for my taste at least.

How much time do you spend on each model?
Wow, I see improvement in this bunch of life drawings already! The longer one, which is shaded, is looking particularly good. There's this technique when drawing with the side of the pencil, which I think you might want to try out. If I remember correctly there were drawings by Erik Gist posted here, but couldn't find them (not that I looked very hard, googling it was easier), so here's a link (http://www.figurativedrawing.com/figurative_artists_gist.htm). Sort of a step away from hatching and making the drawing process more similar to painting.
Just a thought. I'm actually looking forward to your paintings :)

I am still in the process of trying to get the figure down with flow and with the least amount of proportional errors. Only recently I am starting to move on to technique. I've been using 0.9mm and 0.5mm mechanical pencil the last couple of weeks. I'm gonna be changing media again soon, although I donnow if it will be next session ;)

So here's a concept that just came out of nowhere.
It is now on my ENDLESS to do list for conceptual paintings, but I'm posting this sketch here now for the record...
This is a tree of life
This tree you cannot climb, it takes us to the relevant branch without our input as our emotions are often the consequenses of events in your live.
Every soul grows his/her own tree.
However, there are some similarities for each of us:
The trunk of the tree is usually rather thin, because life is something transitory and fragile.
On the higher area's of the tree, the more positive feelings tend to be found.
On the lower area's of the tree, the more negative feelings tend to be found.
The more parts of the tree one has seen, the more experienced one shall be considered.
It is interesting to see that each individual we know is often seen in certain area of his or her tree...
I plan for the faces to be rather universal, without much hairstyles or makeup or difference in proportions. After all, in our minds we are all the same, and this is more about expressions and how universal they are. I would like to keep away from too much detail with this piece... not have any idea for a particular style yet... will have to see where it takes me :)
got the crit that the pose is too stiff (which is definitely so) so I started searching for a more dynamic pose.
This will probably be the pose I'll give myself... It will take a lot of work to change everything and I'm a bit worried I'll loose the dynamics of the fins but I can only try :)

the tree of life looks like amazing idea to depict, and nice start on that already;
thinking about this topic for a while brings up new and new ideas ... nice concept;
I am curious about where this may bring you ..
btw - another "wow" for your IFW project,
I liked the first pose, I have to say, the "body-language" was "communicating" with the viewer pretty nicely, to my eyes, looked to me as if you (the creature) were kind of "thinking/checking the situation" just before whatever may happen in the very next moment ... I liked it, indeed, incl. the face expression ..
(I only could see some proportion issues with the forehead/top of the head);
and - I also like your basic light-scheme, it needs one more (weaker) light source, your are right, but the overal feeling is fine, imo ..
well - whatever you´ll decide for in the end, I am looking forward to anyway ..
p.s. you were asking about the difference between "color" and "colorize" composite methods in Painter - (in fact - these are not the only way how to colorize the image, btw)
I´ll try to explain the main difference between those two at least:
"colorize" alters/influences/changes only the "color" information;
it is adding or removing it (visually) from the underneath layer(s) (depending on what you are painting with, painting with non-color information has an opposite, = decolorizing/desaturation effect);
"color" (not very logic terminology to me) alters/influences/changes not only the "color" information, but ALSO the luminance information -
so - in other words -
while working in "colorize" layer, you are able to keep all your "whites" of the underneath image (and you only are adding/removing the color information, basically)
but - with "color" you are not, since you are not only adding/removing only the color, but ALSO altering the luminance information at the same time - which may result in overall darkening/"dirtening" effect (together with the "coloring" effect); somewhat similar to Multiply, but weaker effect here, not very good for post-colorizing the image ...
and - note - the "color" composite method in Painter is NOT the same as "color" blending mode in Photoshop;

Interesting idea with the tree. Is that the whole concept drawn out, or are you fleshing it out with different ideas for composition and whatnot?
As far as the pose, you've got a nice angle with the shoulder and neck, but the pelvis is parallel to the floor. You might get a lot more rhythm and movement in the pose if you counterbalance the hips with the shoulders, as you see models do a lot when they pose.

yes I think I confused the color layer usage in Painter with the coloring method in photoshop, which one finds described in most online tutorials. Thanks for clarifying things. I will try the difference between colorize and color in Painter as soon as I get the chance!
This is my first visualization of the Tree of Life.
Just putting the idea down on paper so I don't forget.
I want more heads on it eventually (to show a wider pallet of emotions/expressions) and a more tree-like appearance, also will play a lot with color in this one for sure.
I've got many more ideas waiting to be drawn but I just don't seem to have the time to do so yet. Thanks for the great crit concerning the pelvis area... it's weird that someone as pelvis-orientated (LOL whatever that means), I seem to have many problems with drawing the pelvis. It's important though as that's where the flow of the gesture is determined in all directions (imho).
ARGH I so want to PAINT and I'll be stuck here making invoices and credit notes all day again! Money is the worst thing to need bleh. So I apologize for not posting an image with my reply (I hate that).

Awesome job on the painting of your daughter and the cat! It is beautiful. When you paint with the palette knife, do you manually change the angle of the brush when you see the need, or do you assign it to the pen? I just played around, and looks like assigning it to "bearing" works best for me. I have tried out the directional brushes in photoshop in the past, and I never could get quite comfortable with those.
I love the frog and the bird studies. Looking forward to seeing more of those. ;)
I like the tree concept. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

The palette knife, I don't seem to be able to turn it manually? How can that be done?
I played with bearing/tilt etc as parameter for the angle but I mostly use it in it's standard position o_O

Hey Johan, been looking through your thread. Your progress over the last year have been very evident.
Some of your life drawings are very well observed while sometimes you seem to revert back to symbolism; even in the same life session.
Something that has helped me is to be ruthless in being accurate in observed proportions and measured angles and maintaining this discipline in imaginary drawings too.
Without fail, whenever I try to slack off, my drawings will will revert back to symbolism and thus look amateurish.
You mentioned that you are sometimes mentally tired during the life sessions; and it is reflected in your drawings. I suppose you will have to discipline your mind and eyes in this area.
ARGH I so want to PAINT and I'll be stuck here making invoices and credit notes all day again!

Yes it's true, there is a lot that can be improved in my drawings, a lot. Life drawings have boosted my skills already, but I've only been doing this for a short while.
You're right that the best drawings are the ones that are made without fear of failure.
The good thing is I will live forever and I will have plenty of time to become a better draftsman!
So keep checking here every now and then... it should be better each time (at least that's the intention LOL)

Heh yeah, 3rd year now. (total drawing program is 5years + 2 optional years of specialization)
It's only a local academy, but they have great teachers and I've learned heaps already.
You don't get a diploma or anything when graduating, but it's cheap (183EUR and I get 50% reduction because I have a daytime job). It allows me to do life drawing every monday and tuesday evening between 18h30 and 22h. If I were 20 now and didn't have gf and kids, I would most definitely go to a "real" school though.
My job is fulltime, yes. I can start my day between 06:00h and 10:00h
I usually get up at 05h and start at 06h, this way I'm able to pick up the kids from school myself. I usually work towards 2 deadlines at the end of the month, so I am able to choose my own workflow. Monthly deadlines also mean very quiet times at the office sometimes (just after those deadlines have passed). So I have time to browse cgtalk and sketch now and then...
Anyway, so I finish work at 14h, then it's straight to the store to buy food n stuff. Picking up the kids afterwards, helping them with homework, cooking, dishes, and off to the academy until 22hr.
When no school, I take E out on the streets to teach her how to drive the car.
I also ride my bycicle whenever I can, a matter of staying healthy...

Reworking the pose for my IFW entry.
Trying to add a more dynamic pose while maintaining a flow in the fins
Now that I've scanned it, I see more things to correct... my butt looks all weird now -while it looked quite good without the fins actually :p
The left forearm and hand need work as well.
Considering that I drew this sketch without reference, apart from checking some muscles in Barcsay's anatomy for the artist, I'm doing well I think...
I'll put this image in painter on a new layer and see what gives...
