Have you guys ever try this in maya?
To have a new viewport..
do this:
1. open "hypergraph" in new windows.
2. press 8 to chage it to painteffect windows.
3. use hotbox or panels to change to "persp view".

then you will have a extra persp windows to use with.....
not only "hypergraph" can change to viewport.
"visor" , "Texture view" and " HyperShade" can do this too.....

may be useful for you guys.
We should have a thread to talk about maya's cheat and tips.
I guess.

sorrry for my poor english.

If I'm reading this correctly.... you're just talking about getting a perspective viewport in a new floating window? All you have to do is go to 'Panels/Tear off copy..', you don't have to do all that craziness. ;)

ha..ha..
I really forgot I can tear it off.....
Thanks FBMachine to remind me.
but I found that if you use tear off windows.... you can not change to another view, while using this method....you can change to other view anytime.
anyway, It is just a bug of maya. And it's not such useful.

but, do you guys have any tips or secret about maya? or some function we are rare to use it which is useful?....

like: you can hold "shift" + "LMB" in IPR windows to select your shader at once....

I really interest to know more about this kind of stuff.......:D
