View Full Version : How to extract edges?

Hi,

I have made a part of a vehicle (polygon model) and would like to be able to extract some edges from the model so that I can extrude them out to begin making an adjacent part of the vehicle that is a seperate piece.

I imagine there are a few workarounds such as extracting faces, extruding and then deleting or something but I was wondering if there is a direct way to do this.

This is probably simple and I wouldn't usually ask.. but any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I usually use the create polygon tool while snapping to the particular vertices...

In most 3d software you cannot have two vertices forming an edge. In Maya, no geometry with fewer than three vertices can exist, without an error. Thus in Maya you cannot extract edges and then extrude them. If I understand you correctly, you probably need to extrude the edges then extract the faces that are formed.

Let me know if you mean something different. Can you post a picture that shows what you're trying to accomplish?

No, that is what is meant. I am primarily used to Max in which this is possible, but it's fine.. I'm sure there are several ways to achieve the same thing such as mentioned by wigal, so i'll experiment a little.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, much appreciated.

You would want to use the Bonus Tools to convert edges to a nurbs curve.

Convert to a Linear Curve to preserve polygonal quality. The advantage to this is that you will be able to use the entire Surfaces Tool set...and then convert to polygons whenever you want.

I agree with _vine_. Extrude the edge on the current object & then extract that face to start your new object.
