View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - DiMENSiON
DiMENSiON 01-15-2003, 05:58 AM Well, this is officially my first post here. I've been browsing the site for a while though. Anyhow, I thought I'd start with a contest. I'm quite new to CG, and I'll see how things go. I figure a contest is a good way to push myself. BTW, I'm 18 and still in school, but spending all my extra time drawing, Maxing, playing soccer and occasionally doing homework :) Just FYI.
This dude I drew is called a Faeth. Yep, spewed a bunch of weird noises out of my mouth to come up with that one. He lives in conjugation with a parasite which provides him with the roots for his arms etc. Makes him stronger, and look cooler. Also gives them the ablility to suck up nutrients from the ground if he so pleases, and burrow. They are born with this magical (or whatever) parasite. I haven't yet thought of how sexual reproduction may occur :)
That's all for now. I'll start on him tomorrow. I may redo the drawing, or add some more views. I'm experimenting with style, which this drawing seems to be lacking IMO. I'm still fairly inexperienced. I may need some help with this :p Probably won't be the easiest thing to model. One more thing, sorry for the crappy picture. I don't have a scanner, just a cammera.

Looking for the pic, I want to see what you've got there! Attatch it if you don't have a website to link it to, the button for that is above the submit reply button.

Yeah, the contrast is crappy. I'll post some better sketches and pics tommorow, and hopefully start on the modeling. As for now, I'm off to bed.

Just a quick post. I've redone the head. I'll start on that first. I think I'll make him more hunched over, less weedy, and not as big. I'm going for a very very evil look. Anyway, I'll keep posting stuff today.

That is one seriously scary character :surprised
Very cool though
Reminds me of Eddie on the cover of Iron Maidens "Fear Of The Dark" :D

All rightie. Here's the final concept. He's evolved quite a bit, and looks darn right evil. He's actually quite a nice guy onece you get to know him :) Now to start on the modeling. Ugh. I'm gonna have to think about this for a bit. Ah yes, a question. I'm not sure how to texture a high poly model, just low poly ones. Anyone know of any tutorials? I'll have to know how in a few weeks. One more qustion while I'm asking. Texture painting. Is it do-able with a mouse, and if not, should I get a tablet, and which one?
Thanks
pretty damn nice ,for the texture , how do you texture your low poly model ,high or low i think its praticly the same method ,and for the mouse question ,i think that is depend to the user ,im not an expert but for what ive done a mouse was okay ,if you have the money lets go for the tablet ,its probably more natural ,i think leigh will probaly give a better response ,she is the texture godess
and he wich soft are u using ?

All right! I started on the modeling. Still more work needed on the head though. Any texturing links or info would be appreciated. I have almost no clue how to unwrap this etc.
Koma: I'm using Max 4.2.
Hope you like it :)

Just anoother quick update. I will add more detail to the model tommorow, and probably finish the arms. Still don't know how to texture this guy :p Textures I'm hoping should really bring him to life. I'll probably add lots of detail with displacement and bump mapping. Anyway, here's what I've don so far:

Looking cool so far, although the body needs some shaping work.
For texturing, check out the texturing forum here on CG Talk ;)
HUGE!!!...this character is very promising!:)
