It sure does look cool. Unfortunatly not cool enough to cancel out the disappointment I had after a few hours of researching this movie.

No way! This looks much more fun than the Citreon commercial. I love how it's slightly cartoony, for me it adds more character. I'm glad they stayed away from the cliche grungy, ultra-tech mech style we've seen so many millions of times already. This photo just screams "Transformers" to me!

that citron ad is pretty much what I expect transformers to look like.
Think about it. They developed the toon look for scanner darkly then we see it used in a bunch of commercials before the movie came out. They develop a way to transform objects for the transformer movie and again they use it in some commercials be fore the movie came out.
Remember iRobot. Before the movie the FX company made that short with a police robot running around in Africa. It was shot in a documentory/Cops kind of format.
Once the FX companies develop the software they use it in any project. Commercials come out quicker so we see it there first.
This is a practice that I think spoils the movie.
Imagine if the first time we saw a light saber was in a commercial before star wars came out. The Wow factor turns into so what I saw it already.
I'll wait to see some trailers before passing judgement on the movie.

I'm sure cg will be used far more than animatronics so I wouldn't worry too much guys. Actually, I'm far more worried about the story than I am about special effects. I'm pretty confident the movie will at least 'look' cool.

I thought it was going to be all CG also, but i think it looks quite cool. It might also be marketed to a PG audience so the plasticky look might suit it. Especially if the focus of marketing is more on the toys than the animated series. I'd be more concerned on the story also, but even if the story isn't good but it looks good...i'd be there inline to watch it. :D
we'll find out soon enough...7 more days till the teaser.

Well in regards to all of the above examples, each seperate occasion was done by different companies. Citroen was done by the embassy, not DD as I expect for transformers. The south africa robot thing was done by a company in south africa.
In most cases you can blame (or congradulate) the ad agencies, they're the ones who come up with the concept. While I agree it dilutes the market. There's really nothing that can be done about it. Here we are still talking about the dancing robot commercial after all.

Well... sure it looks plastic, but come on!! Itīs just a production picture, not a frame from the actual movie! You canīt draw any conclusions based on this!
Any behind-the-scenes photo looks crappier than the finished post-produced movie... and they might just use this model for close ups, and do the rest with CG...
Everyone here knows this, so why donīt you guys wait a little before saying you are all disappointed?
Does anyone remember this pictures?

I was saying that I was disappointed with the story. You can find pretty much the whole plot online with just a few hours of searching, and in my opinion, it isn't very "Transformers." Of course, that was several months ago, and I'm sure a lot has changed since then, so I will reserve final judgment untill I at least see a full trailer.

It does look plasic like bu my guess is that IF that is going to be used in the film it wont look like how we will see it now, micheal bay has a way with camera angles and with lighting, you can be assured that it will look quite stylish and flashy. He always adds an orange/yellow or blue haze look to his movies as you can see in the examples below. Will Smith once said that Micheal Bay as well as Jerry Bruckheimer know how to make anything look good, that is one thing I must agree with even if the films are not enjoyable they are very very pretty.

All you need to do is look at Michael bay's track record ("Armageddon, Pearl Harbor", "Bad Boys 1 & 2") to be disappointed in the story. I have no doubt the explosions and fight scenes will be cool and story will be not. I haven't read the script or seen the trailer for "Transformers" and I would still bet money on this.
And I'm not a gambling man.

all those complaining about the plastic look must never have been on a film set before. Some of the sets and movie props can look well fake with the house lights on.
Experienced DoP's can really make all the difference.
And let's be honest now... put any CG model in a crap lighting setup and it'll look dodgy too.

Im sure that the "look" of the film will be terrific, but the design choices have me worried: It looks more like a lego bionicle toy than a transformer. Its pretty far from my perception of a transformer (from what i can judge from that one pic.).
Maybe they were inspired just a bit too much from General Grievous (SW3) ? :)
Anyway i am really hoping this will turn out well. If done the right way this movie could be loads of fun.

Point taken about the lighting, but yeah, it looks like a big plastic toy at the moment. It's probably the angle, but I'm not sure about the design, I prefer designs where you can see big recognisable car parts, like windshields, grills, headlights, doors etc. It all looks too abstract from this camera angle though. I'd say this is the back rather than the front, but you can't really tell for sure.
But it's pretty cool that they're using animatronics for some stuff. Should make the scenes where there is human interaction that bit better.

I decided to dig around and Embassy did Tetra Vaal (the robot police piece) as well as Citron commercial. Actually they have quite a few robot pieces.

So,why do they need this robot? Are they going to do stop motion with it or something? I know,I'm a noob when it comes to film making and stuff.
mlynch
06-29-2006, 12:09 PM
Doubtful it would be stop motion... especially with something that big. Depending on the shot, and what needs to be done, a live action robot will need to be used. This is done quite often in film. Sometimes it's just easier to have the "real thing" on set to interact with the environment and actors. Once everything is pieced together in post-production the integration between live action robot and CG will be seamless.
An example of this (albeit not a very good one, but the one that springs to mind at the moment) is the aliens in AVP were not always CG, nor were they always animatronic, or a suit. Depending on the shot and what needed to be done would depend on what was used. The fight scene when the aliens and predators first clash is an amalgam of CG and live action suit and animatronic work edited together.

the scanner darkly look is nothing new. they used a program called rotoshop. they used it on waking life (2001). it's proprietary, so good luck finding a copy, but it's nothing new.

It might be just for reference on the set (lighting, sizing), or for shots with actors touching it. There are many possible reasons so I wouldn't worry.

Yes DD is doing some work. What I heard was that most of the work had already been awarded to ILM and a few other facilities before the DD buyout. From what I understand DD was given some of the last remaining work for the show (don't know how extensive). I might be wrong though.
