Hey peeps:
Agostinuk: K, what I mean with that is that you are using your colours more intelligently to suggest form and detail were there would be very little otherwise. You are varying the temperatures more and more and the results are looking great. last one is already an improvement on the previous ones!
patboy: wow man - HUGE improvement! Everything is looking better! Give some thought to your lines though; check out DocBone's and Rebecca's threads for some insane lines. Keep up the great work!!
zinchenko: welcome bud, good looking stuff. One suggestion I have is to work on your lines some more ... avoid going over the same line! Good start, keep 'em coming man!
Mal-1: Awesome man, great line quality, and your hatching adds a very emotive aspect to your drawings. Reminds me of Goya's "Disasters of War" drawings in a way.
zhuzhu: Man, you rock. So little brush strokes, but I can see exactly who that is. love it love it love it. And thanx for the comments man - really appreciate those coming from you! Yes, I had to move the ear because it was in the wrong place and forgot to add the details back in...
Intervain: that's looking great dude - so early on and you get *that* right! great work! But take the lessons from 3d into 2d - a meterial with a high specularity will show form better for instance. Can't wait to see more from you, whether it be 3d or 2d!
agou: You've improved tons too! Those are looking great - especially like the colour one. Keep it up - looking forward to seeing more!
sorry if I've missed anyone not intended!
K, need to move a bit faster with these - which is why this one looks soooo rushed . Will do something more decent soon, hopefully...

This is my first time ever posting on CGtalk. This topic intrigued me since I have been searching everywhere for a place where I can improve my drawing skills.

demented - I totally get what you mean and this is actually one of my major problems - when I apply the whites [or other brightest colour] I get carried away and flatten everything out again - I just cannot make that contrast work yet.... I'll work on it, thanks!
[btw. I'm not a guy - just for the record LOL ;)]

Intervain: no prob! and please excuse - I say "dude!" and "man!" to anyone out of habit. I'll make a concious effort to use the word "dudess" more, if that's fine by you LOL :)

oh Ok - for me the word dude means guy LOL - if it doesn't I'm fine with it LOL - no probs just thought I'd say it... there's so many men in this industry that they do it out of habit and I thought I'd make a statement ;) - doesn't mean I'm angry or anything...
btw. forgot to ask you - do you use any fancy brushes for your stuff or just the regular round brush? and don't know if you said it anywhere but are you using photoshop? Sorry for all the enquiries - I'm so impressed at your progress that I want to eat your brains LOL

here's another go at 2d - head 64 - scary 'cause Van Dyke is my fav painter
can you tell I lack patience for 2d LOL - I can never force myself to stay concentrated on those... :(

Fatebringer <> Impressive amount of studies
Mal-1 Way ahead of me <> woot <> very painting <> like the feel
Intervain <> Van Dyck is indeed a dude <> real high on my list as well <> I think this is superb
When you really start to realize how much the old masters knew and how hard they worked at their game it really makes me feel humble

A few more I did. I really want to improve the quality of my line work as I see with the talent here(Do:bounce:ctor bone is one). But I think I must give more priority to learning form and features. I doubt to do 50 now till this session ends but I guess that doesn't matter. So I'll rather try to improve on the quality as well:)

Yo
Intervain: no worries! And yeah there are way too many dudes in the industry - glad to see more and more dudesses popping up! Nope; only the round basic one. Once you start to use textured brushes it becomes easy to lose form, and when you go for a 3d look form as to be at the top of your list. Yep, PS is what I use, but OpenCanvas has a great pen tool (better than PS). The problem with oC is it rarely works with dual monitors, which is why I use PS. Muchthanx for the comments!
Rebeccak: Oi! Get your arse and your drawings over nya! Right nya! ;P
jabbz: welcome aboard! There is a thread on shading some here, not sure where. Cool start, but avoid multimedia unless you're DocBone or some other Wizard ;)! Multimedia is pretty much always very challenging. keep posting!
Intervain: Hey, that's huge improvement on the previous one! The likeness has been captured very well! Looking forward to more!
Mal-1: Dude you and your style rock. Hard man. Saying soo much with soo little. Hats off man.
Fatebringer: Great studies man. Be careful though - don't blend your line into your shading all over! Keep it up!
Doc: Get outa here. Shait man, these studies are getting better and better. If there is something like reincarnation you were like Durer or Michelangelo (make sense) at some point. Think those are outworldy.
Mal-1: again man - totally excellent. and #31? Do you sleep? Stunning stuff man, can't wait to see some more (don't think I'll be waiting long).
Doc: Muchothanx a bunch doc, really appreciate that! Defnitely has been and still is a huge load of fun nya. UberGlad to have your contributions.
Gord-McDonald: Good looking! Careful - don't blur the edges too much or you'll lose form! Keep up the good work!
kunal: Great work man! like what's starting to happen with your pencil here!
Reincarnigotic: Good work! Work you line some more!
Great work peeps,

Hi there,
I´m still here *lol*
Rebecca - Enjoy the beach ! Doing some heads on sand? Give up and take a rest :D
You deserve !
Doc - I have to ask that... how many years do you draw? It´s so amazing your level...
About the masters... yes, definitively, specially if we dig the whole story behind their lives then we become even more humble.
Why I´m not posting the heads...? Soon, was with no scanner nor tablet since last post, just a lot of 3D work at my short.
I see new people around, kool ! Avatar299 - be welcome !
It´s always stimulating to see everybody here giving the best, improving each stroke, experiencing and helping each other, I think this is the best forum thread I´ve ever been.

Great work everyone! Every piece here is really well done!
I wanted to do some stuff for this thread nearly the whole month ... I always knew I would neve do the 50 studies but maybe a few ... so I started today ... but after 10minutes I got totally bored and called it "done". I have to work on some motivation problems ... anyway here you have the image ... my problem was... my right hemisphere was taking over...

Here is my 5th head...I tried not to take so much time on it so I decided to do a quick small pencil sketch. Not very happy with it, I think I overworked the lines too much and killed it, also the proportions seem a little off. Any comments are welcome! :)

Hi all, :bounce:
I did post a little hello a few weeks back and have been busy drawing since... great work and wonderful posts that I keep seeing here, it's an encouraging site and I like the way peeps keep their comments on the positive and constructive side.
I am not a CG person, trained in fine arts (drawing, painting, photography and ceramics) and have worked as an artist for quite a number of years (15ish), got told about this 50 heads project by a friend (thanks Okkio) and have been totally hooked. It's a really good project and although I haven't figured out how to post my heads... I am having heaps of fun with it :)
So this post, although without drawings, is just to let you know how much I'm loving the project and that I'm still here :D
Worked initially with the heads as maquettes, drawing up 9 to a page to get the feel for each head/face in a quick less detailed manner, now I'm doing larger sketches - all on paper using a variety of graphite, charcoal, pen, ink, pastels and mixing them up - it is getting to the point where I am staring at faces everywhere, guess I can point any strange reactions I get... this way ;)
cheers all and great work!

Everybody working very hard i see. I try to give a few random comments on images that i noticed;
Demented: great work ooverall; i like your #11
Heleb Baq: great Dürer study - very subtle.
Fatebringer: i like the original expressions in your heads a few pages back.
Mal_1: very strong work - i like your #4
ZhuZhu: amazing; your #14 is very expressive
Fes: i like the colours in #2
I've been doing some pencil work and some things in Painter (still need to learn so much). I missed the first two, but they count as well.

Ack, am finally back! It's going to take me days to catch up on all that I missed! :surprised
Well, I wasn't able to work digitally while away, which gave me a good excuse to work traditionally. :) Not a ton of progress from me (hey, I was at the beach!) :) but here are a few:

Pencil start on the same head as above ~ I literally haven't drawn using a pencil in years...(it's always either charcoal pencil or ballpoint pen for me if working traditionally):

Yes, the thread will remain open indefinitely ~ though I would strongly encourage everyone to aim for the deadline of 50 heads in one month.
Those who came later to the thread than it's starting date are welcome to give themselves one month from their starting date to post their 50 heads.

Hello everyone!
I thought I'd give it a try to do a digital painting in Photoshop... since I'm more used to drawing in pencil. It was a nice change of pace for me, but man, some people here make it seem sooo easy! Encredibly inspiring to see Zhuzhu stuff. But overall all the digital stuff is amazing!
I also have couple of question in terms of good brush seetings...
I used the standard brush with the opacity jitter set to pen pressure...is that a good way to paint? or should I use standard opacity setting on the layer modes? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also not to mention feel free to comment on the art piece itself or techniques that might help.

Hi all! I'm joining you all started today. you guys are really talented. Some of you really made the painting seems so easy, like Jafran17 said. That's very amazing! But for me it is quite hard, I just started to learn sketching & painting recently. I spent whole day long for this head using tablet in photoshop, but still get thing done wrong. I tried two version of mouth but still look bad. and the pose look totally different from the original pics. =.=
Any advance comments & critiques are very welcome, and feel free to draw on my pics to show me how to do them right, technical/painting or whatever for a beginner to take note.
Thank you in advance. :D

Tecsun,
as a fellow beginner I can strongly recommend starting your own anatomy thread, if you haven't already.
Just to convince you, I have made more progress since this thread started a couple of weeks ago, than since I first started drawing 7months ago.
Rebecca has put a nice link in this thread already a couple of times but as it moves so quickly here it is once more :)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=341167
now GOGOGO!
EDIT: it's also recommended to browse other people's anatomy threads: BNN, aLoneCuzzo, Mr MU, Thomasphoenix to name a few that really helped me. But don't limit yourself to just these threads, check all of them if you can :D They are a goldmine of information and you won't regret reading them through from first post on for a single second. That's a promise!!

Hi everyone,
Tremendous work here, not long to go before the end of one month! :)
Well, yesterday for the first time in a really long time, I decided to do some oil painting. Lol, I produced a pretty terrible oil painting (which I won't show, since it's horrid and unfinished) but I thought I'd post some shots of my setup for anyone interested ~ I had more fun than anything else, and it was good to touch real canvas again.
Since I don't have a printer (this saves me a few hundred dollars a year, I'm convinced) I had to go with a reference from a cheap art book I bought to use for the express point of desecration. I'll add the Reference to the beginning of the thread and here for others to use if they like. :)
Reference used (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/00_Anatomy%20Lesson%20Series/29_Reference.jpg)
Here's the basic setup ~ the canvas on the easel is what I painted over. On the right is my makeshift taboret which I bought not from an art company but a generic warehouse supply store online (I don't remember what it was frankly but it was cheaper than a real taboret, and much more durable. It has wheels so can be easily moved around).

Hi there, long time no post now.
Doing too much animation by this time, was with no scanners around.
I took a time back home and scanned some of the latest sketches I did.
Here it goes.
Number 11 - very fast sketch around 20 minutes 4B pencil only, white A4 paper.
Same goes for heads 12 & 13 - around 10 minutes on head 12 and 15 on head 13.
All scanned into Photoshop CS2 for quick crop, some contrast adjust trying to reach my ´real´ pencil ranges, I noticed sometimes I scan it never come up with the exact ranges as the original.

Here it goes 3 more...
All done weekend, there is some more, but no time to scan/crop/post, so will do my best to put it all together for tomorrow.
Guys, you doing a great artwork/study here.
Mal - You doing great. Good to see your heads.
Rebecca - Nice oil ;) - Nice place to paint too :D
I can´t place my oil stuff around at this moment, but you making me want it so bad...
I miss the oil´s smell... the canvas touch... but anyway that´s a great inspiration.
Intervain - wow, you keep doing great 3Ds...
Everyone - keep it up, just doing great. Sorry not commenting everyone now, promise will take a time tomorrow to write to all of you.
The heads...
These I did using 4B pencil on white paper, and gave a 0.3 mm finish using a Vario tk fine.
Tried to go fast as possible, heads 14 & 15 took about 20 minutes each, took into Photoshop and added a background in gray-scale, and head 16 took about 45 minutes, unfortunately the scanner didn´t grab all the mid-tones I did to it, and the Photoshop contrast correction went out that way, I didn´t like this way.

Thanks! :) I know what you mean ~ clearly I don't have a real studio, just my patio :D ~ and as much as I romanticize traditional painting, the truth is that it takes over your life! :) But it was definitely worth the fun, even though there is plastic sheeting covering the floor of my living room so I don't track in the paint. :D
NOTE TO EVERYONE:
As we are approaching the end date of the Workshop, I would really appreciate it if those of you who have not already created Personal Anatomy Threads might do so, and post your work from this Workshop there as well.
Personal Anatomy & Sketchbook Threads (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=200)
See this thread for information about creating a personal Anatomy Thread first:
FAQ: Can I Create My Own Anatomy Thread? (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=341167)
This will help me immensely since I want to showcase the work from this Workshop ~ having individuals' work on a single thread will really help me to organize the final pieces.
Thank you!
Cheers, :)

Great to see all of these works and really great to see so many professionals working there gluts off here. That should tell us all how important they think these studies are.
It really makes very little difference if you do 10 of 100 that will 10 or 100 that you would more than likely have not done on your own.

Here's a revised version of Fragonard [hope it's allowed] - I did model the hair this time, after some well justified criticism...

3d max huh, if feel sorry for you already :argh:
i'm a maya user myself. Better yet a powerMac user so 3D max is no option for me. I used it once and since going to maya i don't want anything else. But it kind of depends what you need to do with it.

Intervain - Great bronze looking 3D, your 3D is very good :D .
About not knowing Max, well... you should try, both Max and Maya at least, since you know what you want to model all is a matter of getting around with the tools and keyboard shortcuts, remember that software are just tools for artists, what counts is your base knowledge. So I believe you will make awesome models in Max too as well Maya, polygon modeling is all the same no matter what the software is, edge loops are the same, edges are edges and points are points *lol*, some software just have different ways they behave, but minor things. What troubles is that Max isn't that easy as XSI to find and learn the tools, but the process of modeling is the same.
If I had to hire you to work in Max or Maya I wouldn't think twice, you'd have the job.
Just a matter of time with the software, you are a pro in 3D modeling, any needed time to adaptation will pay back whoever hiring you.
Cya,

well thanks everyone for having faith in my abilities LOL - I'm not sure I have it... at least at work I won't be starting by copying the masters but doing low poly so I think I'll be fine... still I may try and do a master copy to learn better!

rebecca: As we are approaching the end date of the Workshop, I would really appreciate it if those of you who have not already created Personal Anatomy Threads might do so, and post your work from this Workshop there as well.
i`ve done that now, not sure how to include it at the bottom of the reply page but at least i have one, do you have the link as a signature or something?........
i`m guessing this thread will continue on for a while, don`t seem to be too many actually making the 50, although some are giving it a good go?

krispee,
To add a signature, go to the top of the page to User CP and on the left click the option "Edit Signature (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Misc/Edit-Signature-A.jpg)". Then simply add text such as "My Anatomy Thread" or any text you wish and use the chain hyperlink icon to add the link to your thread (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Misc/Edit-Signature-B.jpg). You can also add a link to your website, etc., anything you like. :)
Great to see your Anatomy Thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3725915#post3725915) up! :)
Yes, this thread will remain open indefinitely. I encourage everyone to do as many portraits in the given time frame however ~ the time limit is what keeps us all on track! :)
However, those who have come late to the thread are more than welcome to set a time limit of 1 month from the date they start their portraits, and to continue to post to this thread. As well, those who wish to complete their set of 50 ~ or even all 100 heads are more than welcome to do so on their own time. :)
Cheers,

Great job everybody!
Avatar299: Good job on your last post. I see where you are coming from and I have a tip if I may. You need to not draw of the symbols in your head. Talk through your drawing and draw what you really see in the origional. The eye does not neccesarily have a line all the way around it. Think about how best to represent the top eyelid, the pupil/iris, the tearduct, and the bottom eyelid.
Everyone in this forum (unless they were a child prodigy) had to get rid of the same symbols in their head to be able to really draw an eye and then a face etc. Did that make sense? There are definitely books that say it alot better. pm me if you have any questions.
Keep posting, keep learning!

I totally agree.. Great work by everyone here..
I specially liked the ones from Helen-baq and Razz. The ones ffrom Roberto Ortiz were pretty nice too, i wish i had sucha good pencil technique :)
Well, i haven't been able to paint too much cause i got stuck on this one.. it was my first time trying to actually paint digitally (like if i was painting traditionally..) and it was painful but i guess i got something out =D
Here it goes, my 3rd head (yes, i'm very late..)- In case you didn't recognize it, it's head nº16. (i used a little noise filter just for the flavor :P.. didn't put too much effort on the background, for i tried to do my best on the head)
Special Thanks to Architectus for his very useful Nymph video!!

Another quicky, testing out the wet acrylics, they seem pretty nice. I was working very fast so lots of mistakes.
thanks for the compliments.
