View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - Bruzun
01-15-2003, 04:13 AM
Not my entire nickname because I do not like it anymore (any moderator could please do me a favor? hehe)
So let's start. Sorry for not having a sketch YET, but I have the entire history thou.
"The legends are almost forgotten.....
in the highest mountains of the middle earth. Where the winds cuts like a knife and no life form has the guts to go to.
There, where the ice is so white that reflects everything, where the montains are so high that you can almost touch the sky....
there lives the Helkars, a race of snow beasts. The only creatures that survives in that apocaliptic scene......."
Well terrible huh? Sorry for my bad english, again and again and again, hehe
I was thinking about creating some snow creatures, with entire body covered by white hair, and some others things that I don't know the name :annoyed: but is in my mind.
Tomorrow I'll put my first sketch.
if somebody is asking "why a snow beast? why not other interesting thing?"
because of the snow....
beatiful landscapes can be created with all that white uh?
and only one snow mountain scene in the film
and NO creatures there
so, why not?
Hope I do not made anything wrong.
Glad to be here
My very first challenge
01-15-2003, 10:02 AM
uh, I have a question, a little one
If I do that character and put him on an enviroment scene...
It'll be a 'character' yet or it'll be a 'scene'?
Hope I won't have to ask to a moderator to change tha name of my thread...
01-15-2003, 11:55 AM
a very rough one
01-15-2003, 01:07 PM
Nice one, whats his name?
he look like he would freeze, i was thinking, if he survived up there and had some form of intelligence, wouldnt he use other animals skins?
That opens up endless possibilites for fluffy rabbitears on a stick
01-15-2003, 01:08 PM
First color scheme
Don't be afraid
01-15-2003, 01:11 PM
his name is Helkar, means 'cold from south pole' in elfian.
His not 'intelligent', but smalest enough to not participate in all that ring battle, hehe
forgoto to post the color scheme

well, hello there Helkar :)
/me waves at snowman.
Better with the colours, now he doesnt look like heīs freezing.
01-15-2003, 01:36 PM
Nice stuff. I think you should almost make him shaggier, since he lives in the snow. Or fatter or something. I like it.
01-15-2003, 05:39 PM
Great stard dude!!!

Hello there D-3...

needs an upgrade!!! hahaah
man, this guy is not working as well as I want..... the colors are not fiting at all
Maybe I'll change averything.... every part of him....
hate all this mountains.

01-16-2003, 09:41 AM
MY thoughts are: If ya really wanna change anythig, just change the background,.. please do not touch him.. heīs great.
Or ya start with the colors from the start, that helps me often to like my concepts after.
Don't laugh at my English.. heheh
did he already forget that am the first monkey to use a computer? heheheh
I see you later!
01-17-2003, 01:46 AM
Some minor updates.
Trying to fix what I did not like:deleted Mordor from the scene; changed the montains position so as to look better and more organized. Some problems with the trees, but I'll try to fix it. Started making the overall painting of the beast.
Still tooooooo clean
Hate this in my work.
Love all that noise of Frank Frazetta or even Bisley works.
Need some kind of 'cool noise' plugin
WIP 03 - and counting (http://www.torreismo.hpg.com.br/images/challenge03.jpg)
01-17-2003, 12:16 PM
Yeah... great composition. Much better now!!!!:applause:
01-17-2003, 02:43 PM
Trying to give him a hairy look, hated that 'smoothed' one above.
Desaturated some colours and included some red.

do not know
I only keep paiting and painting
one minute it fits good, and I folow that way
not a nice way of draw
but works for me
01-18-2003, 01:43 AM
Nice work dude! Do you ever do matte painting? Looks like it. Awesome. You guys that complain about clean artwork... if I could only STAY clean and less loose.
01-18-2003, 01:53 AM
Wow great pic man. This is coming along really good.
01-18-2003, 02:51 AM
Its gettin better and better... no crits now dude:beer:
01-18-2003, 05:07 PM
Here's another update
I'll try to put the images not the links because some friends said they didn't see the urls
I'm paiting backgrounds for animation, but not mattes... maybe in the future
lots os things to learn before getting into mattes
ps - now it's a little less clean.. and I have something in my mind that will dirty this a lot
Slacker an Tommy lee:
thanks for replying, nice to see ya
01-18-2003, 05:38 PM
the ones of the shoulder or the ones of the body?
both were made with the classic brush of photoshop... not that airbrush brush but the brush brush (haha, do not know how to explain)
Well, I'm using photoshop 7, but I guess it exists in photoshop 6. You have to lok for a brush with the 'classicbrush' look, and set it to accept pressure for opaccity control (forget size).
And then draw and draw
for that hair with variant size (the back and shoulders) I used the same brush format, but with fading size
draw draw draw
Hope it helps
nobody wants t give some ideas for that guy? I'm not liking him that musch...
i don't know
something is strange
maybe the pose
his not posing well
'staging' for those 'comic' people, ya know?
I was wondering about some orcs corpses
but garomon thought this first
what about some uruk-hai?
01-18-2003, 09:06 PM
Thats really amazing Bruzundanga. Truly. I'm thinking, what can you do to it? The only thing I can think of is to finish it. I hope you don't get turn off by it if you're not liking the piece and stop working on it.
That would be sinful!
01-18-2003, 10:30 PM
Lookin' good. I especially like the way you've pulled off the hair. Maybe you could give this guy some nostrils. The nose area looks a little empty.
01-18-2003, 10:31 PM
brrrrrr its cold here!! :D
Woah, the hair is excellent! And the mountains of the background!
I like the pose, looking backwards as saing "huh? did i leave anyone alive?"
Maybe more snow on the air, or blurryness as a blizzard could be added.
01-18-2003, 11:38 PM
wow, lotsa people here
I'll do it till the end, promise.
I was used to stop my works in the middle (does somebody remeber mine Silvia Saint Coppertone yet?), but this year will be diferent...... new year's eve promisse :buttrock:
He'll not have nostrils, well, maybe some little ones..
i didn't work on his face yet
these kinda of things I'll put in the end
snow in the air
THANKS everybody for replying
updates coming soon
01-19-2003, 04:23 PM
not an update, just an opinion
which pose do you prefer? the first? or that one with some diferences?
The orc head is stopped, but i'll change it, as Helkar turned his head to behind and sundenly stops... you know. Orc head must move by inercia, hahaha
Let me know what you think.
Particularly, i'm happy with this last one... better pose.
two pair of opposed parallels
01-19-2003, 05:18 PM
Yeah dude, better composition. Definite improvement. Looking fantastic!
01-19-2003, 05:43 PM
Have to agree with Gamoron!
01-26-2003, 02:39 PM
Some minor updates (where's the time I'm used to have?)
Kept the old pose.... look like some people see him as he was returning from fishing (that's why he was showing 'the fish', hahaahha :surprised )
Here's the final head (need some shadows adjustments (looks like copy and paste)) and the dead body's position....
For you that wanna know the size of the image
here it is:
2952 x 4134 pixels
35 x 25 cm (300 dpis)
Like to think that in the future those images will be sold in poster format, hehehe
Comments really apreciated
Garomon and Tommy (my offcial repliers):
01-26-2003, 05:36 PM
Hehehe. I'm one too eh? Looks awesome Bruzun, glad to see you finally updated. One crit. I think you need to do some more work on the orc. He doesn't look nasty enough, just looks like a green skinned guy. You should add some fangs and wrinkles or something. Looks amazing though so far! :buttrock:
01-26-2003, 05:49 PM
Todd, sorry!!!!!!! I think always wrote your nick wrong... hhehhe
Nasty orc coming
glad to see you replying
01-26-2003, 06:00 PM
saw your website
you're the guy of that rhino 'beast of burden' thing?
remember a lot that thread
01-26-2003, 06:25 PM
Cheers Dude! Thanks!
01-27-2003, 12:57 AM
Cool man, the orc head culd use some more definition but it comes along great in my opinion..
01-27-2003, 02:11 AM
It's looking great...However, I think you could actually tone down the color of the orcs head so that it is a bit closer in color to the other tones you have in the painting. The green is so bright against all of those whites and blues that my eye is drawn to it and doesn't want to move around the painting. Also, right where the monster's hand is holding the hair, there is a band of black. I think you should either lighten the orc's hair or lighten the band, because they kind of blur together.
Looking great, though!:applause:
01-27-2003, 10:02 AM
Have to agree with Gammo and "The one who is chasing wild sheeps". I am happy that ya found the time to work on.
Its getting better and better.
01-27-2003, 12:57 PM
I drew the mouth as he was hit a lot by the Helkar's clave.
But he now seems to be that kind of sexual dolls, hehehe :buttrock:
I notice the hair colour problem.. next update I'll fix it.
have to say that I read the rules wuick enough to mistaken the deadline.
Thought it would finish in 9th, now I see that's 28th
Looooong time for finishing
01-27-2003, 03:33 PM
Change the head a little
Less green, more grey, less teeth, more blood
Tried to fix the mouth
now seems he has a Rock 'stallone' Balboa look, hehehe
01-29-2003, 03:28 AM
messed with the teeths
cut off the tiny nose
going to other things.... this head is toooooo overdone
hope nobody is getting sick by these images
01-29-2003, 03:30 AM
Awesome:thumbsup: I just threw up my dinner!
02-05-2003, 08:26 PM
God gave me free time this morning and here's the result. Worked on the dead bodies. Not finished yet, but wish to have your comments and opinions. The background is almost finished, and I like to hear you saying what you think.
Things I DIDN'T work yet (but I will): head, left side of the main character, body laid on the left corner of the image (the unfortuned guy that lost his head, hehe).
Comments and critics really aprecciated.
hope you didn't eat yet
02-06-2003, 10:43 AM
Goddamn...thats amazing!!!!!
Now there is a really perfect contrast in it. The colors from the front to the distance are perfectly chosen. Man thats a masterpiece. Maybei am a bit grimy but I love gore and splatter. :bounce:
02-06-2003, 01:01 PM
Thatīs bloody nice!! :scream:
Yhe hanging head is great, a beautiful souvenir from an orcīs massacre.
02-06-2003, 02:27 PM
looks franzetta style
02-06-2003, 03:17 PM
wow, lotsa people!
thanks and welcome everybody
I have to put a lot of blood so as to cover some parts with hair before. Thanks for coming.
Love gore too, but prefer thrash and grind ya know? :D
Thanks a lot for visiting.
Beer for us
Seems you got the idea...
Yeah, it's kind of souvenir....
Like those human heads in predator's film
Thnaks for coming
I'm far far away from Frazetta's work, but thanks for remind him as a comparisson. Think it's the best complimment of all.
Thanks everyone for your support
That's the greatest forum of all
02-06-2003, 03:49 PM
I was sick again!
Loving it Bruzun. Keeps getting better and better. Nice and bloody, looks like he didn't show any mercy on those orcs. My only crit now though is that I think you need to do a little more work on his bottom legs, especially his left. You don't seem to have done as much work i that area.
Awesome work!:bounce:
02-08-2003, 03:00 AM
Hello gamoron, nice to see you getting sick again, hehehe
Hope you like beer, it's healthy
Here's an update.. changed the legs... put boots (ok, it's a snow man, but don't be cruel, ice 'burns', let's give him shoes, hehe)
Redo the left arm, but still not complete, :)
Changed the mountains so as to reach a higher level in realism... .dunno if it works...
Loving to paint it
02-08-2003, 03:51 AM
Nice work man I dig it :D
Lots of good entries this month, don't really know how many participants there been the last challenges but it's nice to see!
Try to work on the left arm some more since it have a tendency to blend with the background, some details on the hand may do the trick.
Keep it up
02-10-2003, 12:59 PM
Thanks for replying
I'll work on the left arm, don't worry. Have to change hand's size also.
Could somebody please give me a hand with lights? I do not have any ideas for lightning this scene. Ice scenes is very hard for me to light. I have never see how ice 'works' with light. I've never see Ice indeed. :annoyed:
Paint overs really apreciatted
If somebody could help with suggestions, regards in advance.
02-11-2003, 06:06 PM
a big change
please, comapre and tell what you think about this new sky and the old one.
Tell me the truth ok?
02-11-2003, 07:17 PM
Wow, really impressive. The amount of detail is fantastic. How big is the original image?
I think I prefer the old sky, now it looks too empty. Although I like the idea of darkening that part, I think it makes sense, so you could try a mixture of both skies.... :) the new sky has so little detail on the dark zone thet right now there's too much contrast.
Looking very impressive anyway. Keep drawing.
02-12-2003, 01:41 PM
I changed the sky... misture of the both, darker one....
minor updates in other parts of the main character... not finished.. but very very close to
Where's everybody? I'm neding some critiscs here....
the size of the main picture is 2952 x 4134 pixels
02-12-2003, 07:25 PM
hey bruzun, hard to pick between 1 & 2's background, but I don't really care for 3's that much. I think it lost it's cold look. I do like the new blood on the hands & axe though. Your doing great, I know you can make it work.
02-13-2003, 03:14 AM
I'm going to say that I actually liked the brighter (colder) image better also. Not to mention, your entire character is going to have to be repainted if you put the sunlight behind him.
What I like, the change of making his mouth open, it's very dramatic. But now the fur looks like it's coming from his mouth.
The biggest issue here, IMO, is the blood. The bodies are fine the way they are, that's pretty cool. But the blood looks like you painted it on a flat canvas. It has no form, it doesn't seem to wrap around most of your objects. It looks okay on the beast, but on the snow, and especially at the bottom center of the pic, it looks really fake.
Other thoughts, For someone who has never seen ice, you are doing okay on the background. And the composition is good as well. You only have some touble spots to work on, but you already have a good piece.
02-14-2003, 05:49 PM
Here's an update.
Changed everything in background.
Rebuiding the blood layer (not shown)
Finished the body, but still work in the head.
Still working on orcs bodies as well.
Please, c&c welcomed
thanks for replying
02-15-2003, 09:02 AM
I really think you are doing well here, Bruzn. But! Now you moved the light source to behind him, and it gave him a really good glow outline on the fur. You still need to add the glow to the blue fur a little bit though.
And where are the shadows? His whole front body is now going to have to be in shadow.
Plus the cast shadow on the ground is missing.
You are getting there!
02-16-2003, 11:22 PM
WOW Bruzun! nice work and development. I think you should go back to one of the previous skies, this current one lacks some of the previous drama. If you keep it though I think I'd agree with dmcgrath. Great work! As for where is everybody? I don't know about the others but they made this challenge to long and I haven't updated for a bit because of other work. But I'll be finishing my piece in time.
Keep it up dude!  :buttrock:
02-24-2003, 07:10 PM
You've made some great improvements since I saw this last. Great job on defining the legs/boots. The corpses could still use some work to be integrated into the scene...a few of them look like they are floating off the ground, but I'm sure you're already aware of that. I like the creatures mouth open...makes him look more intense. The blood on the forearms looks great...Looking forward to an update/finished piece:beer:
03-01-2003, 07:06 PM
Toplist I say...TOPLIST!!!!
03-01-2003, 08:55 PM
As far as you spent the WHOLE evening answering us all (you DO must make a 'posts per hour average', hehe, I'll give you something to see Tommy Lee.
My last pic was in Challenge, but the server was gone, so I'll put THE SAME image here, and some close-ups....
I'm really sorry with my total lack of time these days, so I wasn't able to finish in time...
But I promise you all, ONE DAY, one day.... hehe
03-01-2003, 09:35 PM
Totaly awesome dude!!!!!!
03-02-2003, 10:08 PM
03-05-2003, 08:23 AM
WOW ! I didn't see this awesome painting !
The fur looks great and the face in his hand is very good too.
Just beautiful :airguitar
