View Full Version : Moving a project from LW to XSI

Dear Professionals, Friends, and Colleagues!

We (a small team) have recently discovered that several technical (and workflow) issues are consuming pretty much time in the project (an animation film) we make in Lightwave, so the possibility started to emerge - what if we move on XSI before all of our hair falls out? (Yes, I know that its our fault, but its so very hard to calculate with LW in a production with all of its..well...unfriendly behaviour of one-routedness.)

Is there a known efficient way to convert lightwave scenes to XSI without losing to much information? A third party converter maybe? Or is it (relatively) easy to convert files with batch processing, and somehow migrate the camera-motions and light setups? Of course the models can be converted to OBJ, thats ok. Luckily the character-animation is mostly made by the good old hard way with hand, so its not an issue.

I would be very happy to hear about possibilities, we would like to have the grip on the task (XSI can surely help us out in many ways), not just walk behind the scene with experimentations of odds and cons.

Thank you very much for your contribution,
regards:
Baliquez

XSI has got absolutely the best tool for converting scenes from Lightwave to XSI built in, its called Point Oven and was written by Mark Wilson to do exactly this job at Passion Pictures, where they run both pieces of software.

check it out, should stop you going bald ;)

Really? Built in the app installer? wow!.
Can anyone elaborate a bit on how workflow with a full LW scene including animations of vehicles and characters? Any limitations, gotchas?
Thanks

Point Oven is now as a standard in XSI5.

As everywhere ther are some limitations. If you planning do some animation in LW, then go to XSIand continue on what you have started in XSI.. forget it.

Point oven is able transfer orientation animation, meshes with UVs, textures and morphes, lights, cameras, and animation by bones, deformers and so only by MDD. MDD is sequence of deformation point by point. Something like object sequence, but it is in one file and modify just the original model in each frame by shape animation.

I quess you would also be able transfer the rig animation, but after LW is using different way of IK, it would not be best way how to share data between LW and XSI.
