View Full Version : Need Material and Shader Artist..Collab..Trade
Hey all you C4Ders,
I am looking for some collab work with folks from the C4D community. Currently I am making an animated series to be delivered on the podcasting.
I really want my work to look professional and looking to collab with folks from the C4D community.
One of my weakest points is textures, shaders, materials etc. I was hoping to work with someone from the community in this endeavor.
Here is what I offer since I cannot offer payment at this time.
If you can shade my buildings as I build them, I can build you a building. :)
Here are some of the buildings that need some materials added

He said in trade, he would make a building for someone.:)
Yup, I'll model a building in replacement for shading and materials.
Let me know what building you would like. I love modelling buildings.
Primitiv, thanks for actually reading the whole post before making a comment. It's a trade off, not a freebie.
I'm looking for someone who is good with materials and can get a certain look I want and I'm using whatever I can in my skill set to model buildings for someone.
Darn I wish this would not have gotten moved, the collab area is the depths of Cgtalk. LOL.
Oh here is a side note, there is a percentage of film portions as well if the film comes out. IF no profit you still get a free model. Your time for my time. :P

Hi Flog. First, welcome to the collabs.
I might be willing to help you with texture maps. I would first like to know a bit more to be sure this is going somewhere useful.
How far along are you. What styleare you shooting for ?
Link me to your past work and any more spots you have with info on this project.
Greetings softdistortion,
As far as the project is concerned it is going. I'm a multitasker and so somethings are done and somethings are just started.
I had many stories to tell and one of the greatest problems with getting started on animation and getting started on the story was staying focused on one story.
In 2002 I had this post
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=84299&highlight=flogtales
lol and here was another time still in 2002 looking to focus on one story
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=29927&highlight=flogtales
In 2003 I went ahead and focused on comics for a time being as I thought I would get nowwhere in movies. It is such a grandscale project. So I went for my take on comic books with an artist I hired and befriended.

Guess what though, there is no money in comics. I tried finding a publisher, got a few nibbles, but it was not financially feasible in color at the time.
So in 2004 I spent a lot of time in research and development. I learned alot about various markets including the toy market, comic market, and indie film market. I found manufactors, distributors for toys. If you are going to make money in this business you have to market and merchandise.
One of the things that pushed me back into film was talking with Eric and Terrence.
www.d7peacemaker.com (http://www.d7peacemaker.com) and www.studioartfx.com (http://www.studioartfx.com) They were an real inspiration and doing quite well with films. I met up with the guys at d7 and had a nice chat with them about movies and such and asked .... why are you not doing a comic. Their answer was just as I thought and experienced. There is no money in comics but in movies there was. Upon further analysis and research that is where it looked like I needed to go to tell my stories.
Terrence put me into the fact that 3d movies are the way to go, once you get the models done.
On paper the market for movies is less risky, slightly more time consuming but product wise a lot cheaper. DVD publishing is cheaper than 20 page color printing. You can sell it at a higher price and you will sell about the same amount of units as you would the comic, so if there is a loss, it's not as dramatic. People are more willing to invest in a movie than a comic these days. I then researched more and came up with a business model. Since merchandising was important to future survival I looked for manufactorers and am thinking of investing in the Designer toys based on my characters. For now my focus is on my movie.
I never lost focus over the years, since I was a child to tell stories. So I have to do this.
One great thing that is starting to get popular, which I thought of 10 years ago was webcasting. Now people are going on Itunes and buying videos. That is another source of revenue.
At first I was going to go with the story of Kalimar (http://www.longhairproductions.com/vagabondarts/images/kali_cover1_clr.jpg) since I was doing a comic on him but then I was not feeling it was the right time for Kalimar.
So then after much thinking, soul searching and gut feeling, I went with Flog. It was going to be geared to kids, but I began to again lose focus. I wanted to do a story with Flog but had all these other stories in my head. Finally it dawned on me, if I'm going to do a movie I should do it with a bang.
I descided to do a story on Flog, but then include some of my other characters in as well. Since they are all in the same universe I thought we could do a story introducing many of my beloved characters. There will be cameo shots of some, some have changed a bit to fit the story. (It was a crazy idea but I thought Osamu Tezuka did it all the time, why not me?)
For the past year and 1/2 I have been in post production. Looking for the right style and learning more about modelling and animation. Preparing myself. I also started working with a partner, who is more linear than me and been grounding myself thanks to him. I have not lost focus.
Now about style
I hate my style so started a search for the right style. I had to save some money up first (nobody is really willing to collab these days) and was able to find a few artists but to no avail. I went through 3 or 4 styles and each just didn't know how to capture my characters, they tried to change them up to much, great artists, but just didn't capture them.

There were a few more I went through.
Finally I'm back to Carsten ( he had been busy as a colorist on the evil Earnie Comic )
So we'll see how his designs go. I'm excited to see what he turns out.
After that we begin modelling characters.

Teyon is one who is on board for at least one character model. He's always a helpful guy. He modelled the original Flog.

Bob http://www.bobtronic.de/gallery/folder/gallery/finished is going to start on Brick
Here is some of my gallery at deviantart.com
I recently purchased and registered my domain www.flogtales.com (http://www.flogtales.com)

While I'm waiting for the finished character designs, I'm searching for further help in areas I need help. If you look at the Kalimar comic you'll see I want quality.
Here are some funny animations I did 3-5 years ago.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/27844167/ this one was for a Flash movie.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/25345630/ is an old character animation test, I've gotten better, lol.
Here is a few scenes I did long ago. Please do not pay to much attention to the animation it is older animation and it was meant for the web, so fewer frames and a little choppier
http://www.deviantart.com/view/25345567/ some are really old. So don't laugh to hard. It was also before I learned rendering.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/25326501/ a goofie online comic I did. It's more of a storyboard.
And here are scenes from other little movies I was working on. 5 years ago in my unfocused days. Focused on making a movie but not on any particular movie
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/25297148/
So is it going anywhere? I would hope so. I've gone a long way, now I'm on the verge of getting things really going and fast. The more help I get the better and faster it will be.
By the way anyone who helps gets cuts in on any profit. That however is a matter of signing a contract.
I am doing a small generic contract now and currently working with a lawyer to go out as a LLC Limited Liability Corporation. I'm incorporating myself.

hehe... I think i get the idea you are serious about this then. :)
Ok, maybe I missed it, but the look is NPR? Comic color styles? Or are you still looking for a style for these buildings? I'd like a clear idea of what you want them to look like so I know if I am interested in doing some for you.
I've been doing a lot of cellshade lately, so if it's not NPR I'd be happy too. :D
NPR? Near Photo Realistic?
Nah, takes to long to render.
I'm going for a slightly inbetween celshade and vinyl look.

Somewhere between this and this
http://www.animallogic.com/film/CN/images/pic_05.jpg
Those buildings you saw were actually for the film.
I was going a little simpler in building design, but I thought, I want more detail

I guess I thought you were shooting for more photoreal from the shape of the models and the real palm trees in the background :) What you are heading for should look good.
Like I think you already said "shaders in C4D" would probably be best to do it with your render apps built in shaders if you want this look. It could be done in UV and painted image maps, but a lot more work to do, especially for a whole city like your link. Unfortunately I don't use C4D, and could only do Texture mapping work.
If you decide to go more photoreal and can use texture maps, let me know.
