***Please keep your model untextured for final voting, this makes it fair at the end for everyone.***

I definitively understand the point in the actual case...a modelling focusing challenge.

But I belive it's killing lot of fun for good texturer out there and lots of fun for people that like to see art in its various forms like me.

When I first read this rule I was wondering when would we have to show our model in wireframe only for final voting...

***A guideline which goes for EVERY challenge, absolutely NO premade meshes/models. so no props or non-mainsubject characters either. ***

I really agree with this rule and I think it will help to balance modelers and texturers because great texturers will have to loose much time on modelling their new meshs hehe :buttrock:

Note: Beside this rule, I would suggest to users to add constantly "work in progress" images to help proving is mesh are totally made from scratch.

With the etablishment of this new rule, I belive we could change the challenge focus from Modelling to Beauty or Orininality or maybe both...and make something fair for everyone whatever the subjet and especially, something more interesting for good texturers and most part of viewers/voters.

What do you think about it?
Please let me know!

sorry about my english...

Hi paranoy2k and to everyone else reading, the reason for the above rules are simple, there's no question that a brilliantly textured model would garnish more votes and interest than an untextured one, you can hide alot of modeling errors with textures and tricky lighting, this is not what the modeling challenge is about, sure you can texture, animate your models as you go, but you must show an untextured version at the time of voting..

Think of it this way, we're in school and we're focusing on one specific task and it's modeling, I'm not sure if you noticed, but they're many newbies here and watching on, that would love to learn to model and see it done step by step, or in a vid like Martin -K- so nicely executed. (I know I wished I had that luxury when I started ;)) This was the sole intention of the challenge that the creators Cerreto and loganarts intended, they also wanted no prizes awarded at the end, just knowledge. But the reason we got sponsership from New Riders, is simply the fact we would like to award your hard efforts everyone is definitely putting fourth ;) and your choice of book is just a small token of our appreciation :) . Again it's knowledge you would get from the book, see where we're going with this? ;)

Keep in mind we don't want to turn it into a contest, that's different we're basically in school, learning a specific task, and that task in modeling

I hope this explains where we're coming from

good luck

oh I forgot to mention, we WILL have texturing and animation challenges in the future, so don't fear, they're 12 months in a year :) by the time you're finish a year of challenges, imagine the killer demo reel you'll have :D

Hey lildragon i have a little qestion to about the final image that we must submit. can we pose the character in an environnement an light it? since we can texture it, it would help if we sould at least light it and use sme materials (only color) to give a mood.

Thx

Yup that's fine, just as long as you use base colors for the final renders, keep in mind tho, you must state you're modeling an environment and character in your thread title, this would make it easier for me to sort. And finally if you put a character within an environment, it would be placed in that category, if you would like your character to be voted on separately, render your character alone, same goes for vehicles.

Hi Lildragon,

I wanted to say I understand perfectly your points about this challenge...

I understand now a little more the philosophy of challenges based more on education than competition. If I want a beauty/originality based contest, I'll just have to try every others big oriented computer graphics site...

Finally, I'm happy to know that there will be other type of challenge focusing on different technical parts of 3D.

If we can't texture...it makes a bigger difference with the 2d characters (Or Vehicles or background...)...
Why giving us a so big restriction??? The final issue of this challenge is to have fun and a character the more beautifull he can be?And a nice picture... No?
What is the most important...Meshes or Characters-Soul???
The W-I-P is here to see the mesh, but for a Finale image,if we have time, why not texturing???
Technical aspect must be as invisible as possible at the end !
2D,3D, Detailed,Not detailed,2000 Poly,700000 Poly...Nevermind!
I just want to see the best pictures i've never seen before!
Don't add limits ! Let's go! Use what you want... Modelling Clay include! ;) :p :p :p
And Texturers are working in the same industrie than Modelers,No? Where is there challenge?
Texturing is an art too,and I think a lot of people want to know more about it!

I am also not agree with the new rules: no textures, no background
firstable, I though this challenge was here just to confront our work to others artists, it was a source of inspiration and emulation, and also to produce a nice picture in a month, but gradually, rules intend us to have no creativity, just print sreen button of our work and nothing more

I also find it's a great shame to have gift, that will poison the challenge !
I'm afraid the Cgchallenge is loosing his spirit : descovering others artists creativity and talent !

oh man, here we go again . . .
I [and my fellow mods with me] FULLY understand where you guys are coming from, but you'll have to understand that this is a MODELING challenge.

If we can't texture...it makes a bigger difference with the 2d characters

actually, no, it levels it more . . . 2d needs to paint his depth, while 3d only has to render to get depth. Having the rule of untextured models would level the odds more instead of less.

Technical aspect must be as invisible as possible at the end !

actually, that's true, but we have a 3d art section fo this purpose.

And Texturers are working in the same industrie than Modelers,No? Where is their challenge?

well, lildragon has answered this one allready :
oh I forgot to mention, we WILL have texturing and animation challenges in the future, so don't fear, they're 12 months in a year

I though this challenge was here just to confront our work to others artists, it was a source of inspiration and emulation

Again, that's what the 3d art section is for . . .

the challenge is to challenge eachoter on the same battle ground and with the same skills, it would not be fair to have a lion challenge a kitten, would it ?? so that's why we castrated the lion . . .
