View Full Version : New showreel, bit of everything on it
Hezza 06-26-2006, 10:28 PM Hi there,
Well i've finally finished my showreel and after a day of playing with codec's and compression its ready to post (well, divx is still giving me issues but the quicktimes have turned out alright). Its a mix of stuff really, i just wanted to show a general competance which will hopefully get me my first job in the industry. I'm going to be aiming for a junior modelling/texturing/rigging position. Theres a few specific jobs i'll apply for and otherwise i'm just going to send it to some smaller studios as a speculative enquiry and see how it goes.
Thers loads of little things i'd like to change about the work but i could spend forever doing that, so i'm happy to call it done for now and carry on adding to it as i do more pieces.
Comments and crits more than welcome
Hez
EDIT: Just thought i'd add, i know the animation is abit ropey, but i wanted to do some to show the models off, i won't be going for any animation jobs :)
Quicktimes: (Sorenson 3, mpeg4 audio, all can be streamed or right click save as)
320x240 (http://www.hezza.co.uk/showreel/MartinB_320x.mov) - 12.8Mb
480x360 (http://www.hezza.co.uk/showreel/MartinB_480x.mov) - 34.0Mb
720x540 (http://www.hezza.co.uk/showreel/MartinB_720x.mov) - 57.6Mb
DivX: (Only one for now, having issues encoding, this has quite a few artifacts, the quicktimes are cleaner)
640x480 (http://www.hezza.co.uk/showreel/MartinB_Divx_640x.avi) - 31.8Mb

Thanks for the comments rblitz7, i agree about the final piece on the reel, that'll be the first to be bumped off when something new goes on :) (the next peice i'm working on is a giant slug being ridden by his handler :) ) I put it on there mainly for the shot of the heads at the end and the motion tests i did for that project.
Having an annoying day so far tho, been printing up some dvd covers and the first 5 printed fine, so i thought i'd do some business cards as i've run out of photographic paper, and the printer has decided to not print black anymore. I only put a new cartridge in the other day so its not run out, and the last dvd cover printed fine to the end of the page. Now after doing some nozzle cleaning and alignment tests its decided to loose blue also :(

Hey, nice work. I really like the cave worker. I think for your lip syncs, some quick, small eye darts might help a bit. Looks great though.

I love your face rig, even rig for tongue, wow!
also the viking character is great
I am not sure about the clasroom scene, is like it doesnt match the quality of the rest
the woodman is great, I bet that would hurt anyone:D , reminds me the scene from pepe that handles the robot to attack the cameraman

Thanks for the comments guys, i agree about the classroom stuff, it was some work i did at uni. i'm working on 2 other characters at the minute, a little alien dude and a female face, i'll post some pics soon.
I have a slight problem tho, i came off my mountain bike and broke my collar bone last night. Arm is all strapped up at the minute and typing left handed :( Hopefully won't be out of action too long. I was just starting to get back into Zbrush.
EarBrawley, i know what you mean about the eye's, they abit slack, surprising how fast eyes really dart about.
Thanks again
Hez
EDIT: sorry for any typo's or ramblings, these tramadol have quite a kick to them, keep nodding off :)

God you made me lough with th e wood man, I had the same idea time ago, but never done it.
the only remark on that shot is the base, when it fels its not realistic, it looks too light...
great stuff anyway, really like it.
Hal.
Nice reel, you have alot of cool skills. The rendering of the head in the beginning looks great, but I agree with EarBrawley about the eyes. They have to move much quicker. Sometimes it looks as they just follow along with the head. You need to have your eyes aimed towards a locator or something. It can be worth fixing because we mostly look at the eyes when we look at a face talking.
Exept the eye thing the face rig looks really cool though. I like how the flesh under the eyes moves when he looks around, nice. And the deskanimation was really good too! I now feel kinda bad for the guy standing beside me on my desk...

Honestly, since I am a great lover of stylized characters, I loved the Easter Island-looking guys. Very nice. I actually wish there was more of them, but that is a personal choice.
I would also agree on the eyes for the character. That does seem to be the hardest part to be believable, but possibly some exaggeration of the eye movement and the area around would be good, if at all possible. Nice rig, btw.
Other than that, nice work!!
Bonne chance on getting a job!!!

Again, thanks for the positive comments guys. I won't be changing anything thats on there now, but i'll definately pay more attention to eyes in the future :)
PaleCow, the island heads are my fav characters too :) they'll definately be staying on the showreel, but the classroom stuff is the first thats getting bumped.
I've posted the alien dude i was working on before i did my shoulder in, below is a quick shader test (ignore the blue veins). The thread can be seen at http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=381299 with more piccys.

Very nice reel, Martin
I can see you've put a lot of work into the guys head at the beginning - his eyelids move with his eyeballs very convincingly - well done!

Thanks Chris, That means alot coming from you.
Just been looking through your portfolio and i recognise a fair few of your peices from different forums, especially the old professor, some very nice illustrations too.
I'd completely forgotten about this thread actually, first post on here in ages :)
If anyones reading, I'm looking for work again :) just finished a 2 month contract in Bristol and looking for a freelance gig or some remote work to tide me over for a month. (Lull of work at the studio I was at, hopefully they'll be renewing it when the next big project comes in)
Cheers
