My first challenge post :)

"Deep in the Mirkwood a dark city has been hidden for hundreds of years. Spawned from the unholy union between the children of Ungoliant and a mix of orc, elf, man and dwarf. The elves can only whisper their name in dread. In elvish they're called the Morgil. The dark hearted bastard children who are kin to Shelob."

These spider-folk are communal. They hatch out unarmored but slowly grow spines, horns, and become completely shielded and more spider-like as they grow older. An interesting mating ritual involves combat between the males competing for the same female. After the mating ritual, the females usually consume they're willing mate as they are locked in ecstasy...

Unfortunately D-3 beat me to posting this demi-spider creature :hmm: seemed a shame not to post the concept sketches. It was done in ballpen :p

I'll post a number of concepts later today ;)

That's a GREAT idea for a character, Primus!! :D:D:D:D
Those are really awesome sketches
If you can model like that, this one will definitely be quite a sight to see when it's done! Best of luck to you

That is definetly one of the better concepts I have seen so far. The concept of such creature truley feels like something one could find in Mirkwood. I can't wait to see what you do with this.:applause:

Hey loggie :) !

I'm a Tolkien enthusiast, what can I say?

Thanks for the comments everybody, I'm still going to post some more sketches for different creatures, choose one and then start modelling

Good luck also Leigh, Aurora, and Loggie :scream:

I'll try to get it done by the end of the month...

Thanks for the comments m@. and Fred :)

I've started some 3D studies of the Morgil I'll be posting that later today.

Meanwhile another study in ballpoint pen (furiously sketched on a train)...

"This one is of a Baldrak, a fusion between an orc and the seed of Ancalgon the Black, the mightiest of the dragons who was slain by Earendil in the great war against Morgoth. The Baldrak was to be Morgoth's ace in hand, they breed much faster than dragons, can fly and breath fire. But when the war turned against Morgoth the Baldrak fled to the Misty mountains."

I'll do little 3D tests and more studies... Still can't decide which to finalize...

Ladies and Gentlemen I think we have a winner!!!!!
Sorry Leigh I always love your stuff, but this is over the top, major league hot work. I can actually envision this as being part of something Tolkien would have put in the Silmarillion.

My only suggestion is that if he is to fly he'll need alittle more to the wings in order to get the full length and bulk of his body off the ground.

Both of those are hella cool, but the Baldrak kicks mucho booty! I would love to see that in 3D!

Thanks for the comments fleedawg, foenix, and rockrat. I still don't know which to develop, I've come up with two more concepts that I'll post tomorrow.

Aurora it's an excellent suggestion :) I actually ran out of paper so I made the wings smaller... Will do :D

Meanwhile, I've started some 3D studies of the Morgil's head... Some difficulties with it, I'm used to box modelling and I had to resort to detail out to get those eye's in. I'll also post some studies of the Baldrak's head as well tomorrow :D

When I first (and second, third....) time I looked at the sketches I truely did not think that you would be able to create models to do the sketches the justice they deserved. Not Saying anything against your ability but really impressed by the concept art. I'm so very pleased to stand totly ashamed of such a thought. Now I don't think the sketches will look like more then crude scratches compared to your models. Please, oh PLEASE keep us updated on this work.
The only suggestions I have right now is that the top 'canine' fangs just don't seem right but I think its just the lighting thats playing tricks on my eyes. They seem to thick and to far back in the mouth.

very cool modelling man. I really thought you would have a lot of trouble getting the eyes modelled in the one head but ya did it very nicely i must say :) now lets see more. Your baldrak is a nice design too are you building both?

Thanks Somlor, Joril, m@., Hexodam and Anubis-Halil :wavey:

aurora, you flatter me thanks, I agree with your fangs suggestion, I based them on a wolf. Then I realized a wolf can open its mouth wider... So I removed the large upper canines, since the Morgil has other methods of killing its victims. I modified the design quite a bit.

Thanks nick :) , I don't know if I can do the Baldrak in time, I'll try! I'm posting something in the 2D challenge if I can't do the Baldrak in 3D (guess I can stand not sleeping for 2 weeks :( )

Here's a small update, I've started to detail the head and started the upper torso, I'll try to post another update later ;)

Thanks BrainFaucet, levin, Sigil, Hexodam, gareth, Clanger, mrwilt, timsvw, and A Morley glad you liked it!

KingMob thanks and Primus (the band) does rock :buttrock: !!!! (Les Claypool is a god on the bass!!!!)

Lukashi, thanks, it's box modelling done in Lightwave.

3D Freak, i'm blushing man, thanks for the compliment, I recommend life sketching and studying muscles and the way they move from good books, stuff by Burne Hogarth and Andrew Loomis are awesome :)

Dreamwave, that large eye in the middle is capable of seeing as we see, or maybe more like a cat's it gathers more light to be able to see in the dark. The smaller eyes can see into the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum but at a limited range. They can also focus and look at things independently, kinda like a chameleon :D

I was deep into the first model, suddenly a light bulb broke on top of my head. :lightbulb (Ouch! Friggin bulb!!!!)

So I thought to myself, "Hey it's supposed to be a race right? Why not do all the members?". So I've started the female, children, eggs, old warriors etc. of this species. I've started to add detail to the young male Morgil, started modelling a young female too. Dunno if I can get to the architecture in time :D

The young male was modelled in Lightwave, the female in Wings3D. Kinda like rock and roll. Or Ham and Eggs. :p

My god, this is really extreme modeling and really nice done. Maybe I'm a little overreacting, but I just like youre style of modeling, love all the models you made (at least those I have seen).
Ppl like you are making me sad on one side and very driven to go and get back to modeler to learn more about all this.
You really need to do a tutorial on some model so we all can see you workflow and modeling techniques so we can learn from it.
Keep us updated man.

Your modelling is coming along nicely, and I'm glad to see the level of detail that you are including in it, but I feel that overall your model is just a bit too boxy and unnatural looking at the moment. Smooth it out a little more so that it looks more natural :)

Primus

wozz thanks for the kind comments, I'm struggling to meet some deadlines and I've had to slow down my progress, I'll update it sometime this week :)

Leigh, thanks for the comments, I'm still building mass into the model, I'll be fine tuning everything once I've done with that :D
