Hi all, I've been working on these two pieces in tandem, one at work and one at home and thought I'd throw out the cgtalk feelers. Crits and comments muchly welcome, and I thought I'd post a couple of WIPs for each so you can see how they've progressed.

One thing I'd like thoughts on is full nudity or more modest clothing in the water fae picture? I'm undecided as I'd like it to be risqué but still viewer friendly. And thoughts for additions to the background of the merfolk too. My initial idea was to have some skulkng silhouettes of big nasty looking fish about to eat the hapless male prisoner (he'll eventually be chained to the coral/rocks), but any other suggestions will be happily considered.

The merfolk:

And the water fae (a trio of brothers who are cannibals and prey on the desires of their victims to lure them in):

Wow, love the colours on the merfolk piece. They've got fun poses as well.

Nice progress on the figures in the fae one and great idea. :) I think the bikini is too obviously covering her... well because it's sticking to it's place pretty much, but could also be wet ofcourse. Really nice ones.

Looking great, but perhaps you should lower the contrast of the water surrounding the figure, to help them pop out more.

I too am fond of the merfolk picture. I like the colours a lot, and the mood, too.

The picture does need a little more contrast. You can play with separate adjustment layers to find the right balance. Something that might give the image some kick is to warm up the colours of the deepest shadows; that will bring out the blue and green better, and give it a fuller feel.

Perhaps the merfolk's (left and right) bodies could be adjusted a little. I get the feel they would have a very smooth, fluid motion, emphasizing on curves and based on spirals with their tails. Right now they seem a little rigid.
The middle figure, though, is spot on.

george and eilidh thanks for the comments, I'll be tightening things up as I go. There will be more contrast on the mermaid on the left of the pic, though the right hand side one will be less contrasty as she is more of a secondary creature, though her face will contrast a bit more by the time I've tweaked everything, but her body I wanted covered in more hadowy waters, where edges are less defined. I really wanted a more viscuous feel to the water, so it feels like they are in water, rather than just suspended in blue space, so the lessening of contrast might work well for that. I will certainly try putting some warmer tones into the shadows and see how that works.

A quick update trying some thoughts on fish and plants, trying a curvier seabed and added a little space to the top of the canvas which felt cramped.

Another update, still trying to get the feel of the water right, and experimenting with different ways of building form as I go. I discovered the wonderful brushes of Linda Tsao (I think that's how it's spelt) known as peachysticks on deviant, and they've been such a wonderful asset in the creation of the merfolk piece.

The waterfae piece is on hold for a little while as I finish up a couple of other things and do commissions.

Comments and crtis very welcome.

I dunno Zephyri, I've liked this from the beginning - it's more a treat to watch you complete it than me having any crits.

If I had to pick anything out, and this would be extremely nitpicky on my part - I would say perhaps a little less saturated color along the same hues (blue, green, yellow) and add some complementary. But youcould very well be on your way to doing that! But honestly, that's just me trying to pluck a crit out of the air to have a crit. Quite lovely :)

Aw, thanks Runecaster, hoping to finish it soon!

And here's some more detailing and adding of fishes. What do you guys think about the looming big fish creature that was present in the previous version in the background? I cant decide on whether to leave him in as added impending doom, or whether he's distracting from the main scene.
