View Full Version : A learning project - for fun :)
emkaybarrie 06-26-2006, 11:30 AM Hi everyone! Im quite new to 3d and am loving it. Recently I decided to start a project to help in learning 3d. The idea is to finish with a short(ish) animation based on a mixture of toy story and star wars (you can see a still on my portfolio of what I mean). My cousin and I decided on this because it gave us flexibility in what we made (e.g the toys, etc). The point of this project is for people, who are fairly new to 3d, to learn and have fun :D . Any one interested should contact me at emkaybarrie@hotmail.co.uk. This post will be updated with those who are currently involved. Right now we really need someone who can set up a simple website (for collaboration). If your interested in joining please either email me or post here and tell me what you believe are your strengths. Hope to here from alot of you:bounce:
Btw I would say my strengths are modelling (mainly polygons) and animation

For a start, I doubt this project will remain a "just for fun"! Don't think you won't get stressed sometimes. There won't be any fun then ;).
As for the project, I'm in! I don't have any other project to work on so this is a first.
Strenghts: MK (mind if I call you like that, emkay?) knows them already but for others that don't, I've focused on textures but low poly modeling strengths are building up :P. So I am pretty new to it too. I started a couple of years ago, or more... with 3DSMAX but soon after moving completely to linux that is what got my attention. Now after getting seated with linux I can start doing what I started a couple of years ago and stopped after a few months.
What I use basically right now are Blender and GIMP. Inkscape (Illustrator, SVG) is something new but I'll give that a try too.
BTW, me and MK have been discussing in private ideeas about the scene. Maybe you could post them here, emkay, and wait for other comments.

Oh and I am sorry I have nothing to show because I lost my work when I moved to linux (forgot to backup). I made a picnic scene with a table, leaves, chairs, no sky though; a solar system; a pen; my speakers; a night scene with a bench near a street lamp but that's all gone :'-(.

noooooo!!.....awell remember to back up this time :)...anyway for evryone else here are our ideas
Paul's
It's night. The room is if filled with toys lying around everywhere and this kid plays with one (!audio included!).
Then his mother comes, tells him it's time for bed, he then leaves his toys and his playroom.
The lights go shut, only the one coming from the door is casting upon the carpet, then slowly fading/sliding because the door is being closed.
All this time the camera does not move. We don't see the mother, just the kid and the Waiting background you designed.
The only light left is the one coming from the window, dark-blue
Then the toys start to light up... maybe some toy voices? dunno
One ship takes off, the another and so on
It's all dark and lasers start firing, carying the light with them, lighting the very neard surroundings of the beam; just as like you would have thrown a small light bulb in the air
Mine
Black Screen - voice over "the war has been raging on.......etc' (really tense an serious mood)
Jumps to scene of the bedroom (or playroom) - nothing is moving
You suddenly see a ship flying quickly past the camera (flying towards maybe the drawer or something) with the camera still looking at it
Then the camera begins to look back and is faced with an armada of ships (like the mothership, etc) - maybe at this point some dramatic music
and then my mind goes blank :)
any other comments or ideas would be great!
