View Full Version : Ninja of the Black Lotus
ssjchrono 06-25-2006, 07:33 AM Hey guys, I've been working my skills for a while, and this is the latest work I've done. I think it's worth posting so here goes.
First here are the concepts.

Well that's it so far. I'm going to start on the head soon. I did a model before this that really helped me learn how to make a decent head, and maybe later I'll post it later. Thanks for checking this out, I'll post an update soon.

cool concept, cool model so far, just the arms seem kinda faggy, also when you weigh em.
try to get em like straight, as in Davinci Pose straight.

ahh! very nice, definatly a overall cleam mesh with very few errors to speak of.
but why do you model the wrists at that angle? you sould model it in the most natural position possible, that doesnt look very comfortable.

Looks good and mesh also is nice!
I'd tweak the angle area and wrists a bit though. Upper body looks really good but maybe the sideview shows that the character is leaning a bit too much in front? I don't know...it might be my eyes playint tricks :>
How many tris are there?
haha! and I like the heart shaped pelvis on that final concept study (upper right corner) =)
- We want the head! :)

*edit #2* The head is 1148 Tris, and the body is 2730 tris. I could loose some polys in the arms, but that would be alot of the definition of the arms would be lost as well as make the twist in the arm look wonkey in terms of normals. Of course I could've modelled the arm without a twist, but that's not natural and seems even more wonkey. I think durning animation it will solve some problems too. (the whole twist thing) I think the poly count will go up anyway, I still have accessories to model, like pouches, weapons, that sort of thing. */edit*
Well, thanks for the responses. It's entirely too hot for me to sleep tonight so I'm either going to model a head..... or play Rise of Nations II. Giacomo must live!
About the hands, they are actually borrowed from a previous model, and the arms were at a different angle. I figured why make new hands when I have perfectly good ones already made. Though, I think originally they are just placeholders, was gonna model gloves/gaunlets but decided that what I had looked good. I mind as well change the angle before I post an update. The heart shaped pelvis.... yea ever since I started to sketch with a skeleton first I just used that sort of shape. It gives me volume while I sketch over it.
Also he does lean forward doesn't he.... hmm It's hard to tell. I kinda just winged everything together. Yea oh well I don't need a level (ya know the kind to tell is something is flat, it's a tool.) Everything will be ok when I rig and pose him.
Ok I will try to come up with a head.
*edit* Below */edit*
I'm thinking of using this head. I figured that most of it would be covered up anyway, and I could use this as the base to make the other.... If I don't it still is a damn good head, and I should share it with you anyway. It's my first texture work.
*EDIT3* Images Removed because it is not a part of this project */EDIT3*
The head was originally modelled with Michael Rosenbaum in mind. He is the actor that plays Lex Luther in Smallville. However, after all is said and done, I changed the head so much that I don't think it fits him anymore. There maybe a resemblence, but I left "the mold" long ago and just freehand/eyeballed it till I liked it.

lol mini-ears
IMO you shouldnt re-use mesh parts. Redoing them only gives you more experience

the ears are definetly too small. If you are planning to refine the mesh later then I think you could collapse a few polys in the nose and eye areas. Nice clean mesh on the skull though

modeling and loops look great in the head!
I agree with ShadyD with re-modeling always everything from the scratch. Doing same thing over and over again gives you speed and strenghten your modeling skills. Musclememory* is wonderfull thing :>
*I'm not sure if that is a proper english translation for the word that I'm thinking ;)
I myself am a poor modeler in terms of edgeloops and such. I must improve that part greatly and only by learning from betters I can achieve good meshes. You on the other hand have good understanding about edgeloops and your meshes look good.
...And the ears are a bit too small :>

It's a ninjuh invasion!, yus! i should post mine too.
The body looks good overall, there's some weird edges at the front of the elbow. I'm not sure you need that many segments to make the arm, the extra polys dont add much to the shape.
Tweak the forehead and skull shape, he's got an alien look right now, and the nose is too far from eyesocket (it should be roughly 1 inch in depth, well that depends on genetics hehe). Center the ear on the skull (sideview) and the top part lines up with eyebrow, while earlobe matches roughly the bottom of the nostril.
His jaw could be better, you have it ending under the chin, in reality it should curve around to form the chin (take a look at human skulls). You shouldnt collapse the corners of the mouth and leave them as tris, you should make an "O" shape instead of "<>".
I hope all this gibberish made sense :D.

why are you modelling him a face? if hes a ninja, hes gonna be wearing a mask ALL the time!

Ok first, I'm sorry no head update at this time. However, I have thought about it and yes ShadyD I think it would be a waste for me to re-use parts. That is why I remodelled the forearm/hand. I like this much better, its more interesting and is what I originally wanted.
I promise next update will be a completly new head. Until then, here is the arm update.
First, front wire.

Next Persp wire.

Finally Persp(front) Shaded Whole body.
http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/4093/frontshadedwip2kl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Ninjacore: I thought of that, but this is a exersice and I want to practice. (which is mainly why I remodelled a new arm) I still don't know if I'm gonna actually make a face or not, but I am starting on the head now.
I was thinking if I was to make the face and all, I would use Ken Watanabe as a reference... but I haven't decided.

True, but it's modeling practice and part of the eyes and nose are still visible. Also it's a good starting base to build the leet ninja mask, at least it was for me.
While i'm at it, i notice the lower legs are too thin, but eh if it's on purpose never mind.

Nice hands ;)
Bicep area is still bugging me though, its a bit bended, try moving the fore-arm a bit so that the arm becomes 1 straight line.. its a bit weirdly angled atm

Quick Update:
Here is a very rough head. I'm not quite happy with it yet, so expect it to change. It gives you the basic idea though.

Full Body:

I don't know how much time I'm gonna have in the near future, but I'll try to work on it as much as I can. Though something isn't right with the eyes, I think it maybe bad edgeloops around it.... oh well too hot to do anything.
