Great idea Jurenic,, I love too see a bunch of cars also
here is my current project,, currently rendering in a deep red as i type.
Modeled in Rhino3d and Rendered in Max5 with light tracer and a skylight. Pavement was made with an image and some noise modifier. There might be some grain from the GI, I can't see it.

Rhino NURBS modeled car from year 2000 (the design is naturally more to '69 - '71)
the renders are bit crappy (max sacnline) the model was bit too heavy for handy test rendering (> 1000 000 polys with final tesselation and crappy school machines)
http://www.projectkerosene.com/gallery/pre/granturismo2.jpg
even crappier but shows my favourite detail the rear glass and the gasoline cap:
http://www.projectkerosene.com/gallery/pre/granturismo.jpg
I suppose this is a van too. year 1998 or 99 Rhino for hull Max for rest

goddam... some really beautiful cars in here!
i havent had as much free time as i'd like (yay for school) but since the latest project for the game design club i'm in is a UT2k3 racing mod, i've started on a few of those cars.
My treaded hummer model (http://www.studioflaagan.com/images/3d/treadedhummer/hummer14.jpg) ended up being 1998 polys (working with a ~2000 poly limit) but is going to be scrapped due to a conceptual redesign (oh well, more portfolio stuffing). Once i get those conceptuals back i'll restart that model, but for the time being i'm keeping myself busy with another one of the mod's cars called the Fat Wheel (http://www.studioflaagan.com/images/3d/fatwheel/).
They just got XSI 3 at school, so i'm gonna get cracking with that soon to try and make a nice high-poly car model.

Ok here's the one I'm working on now. . . it's a game model, so it's only 1790 polys, and 1 1024 square texture. . . .

Anyone done any game cars? where you don't have use of spec/bump maps, etc. ? Any reccomendations? I'm not satisfied with the texture on this thing yet, but I don't really know what to do with it.
Thanks.

Jurenic, I modelled my "suited-up cars" mostly with surface tools - a spline/patch technique in 3D Studio MAX. This animated GIF shows the workflow. (http://home.wanadoo.nl/r.j.o/skyraider/tutorials/yak-9d.gif)
I used 3-view drawings and photographs and such for reference.
The BMW was made entirely from photographic reference, by the way, due to lack of drawings!

Hmmm, the F-Type. i've seen a F-type month ago on a XSI Board!?
Do U have a private websitE?

We used finalRender only to generate Global Illumination maps which were mapped onto the cars later. This gives us a nice natural shading. Also some reflections are done with fR.
For animations renderings we use the max scanliner only.
The modeler for the Mercedes cars is "Daimler Chrysler" (original CATIA Data). Additional modeling is done in max.
The Jag F-Type was mainly modeled in max with some additional modeling in XSI (just to try the workflow, still prefer max).
I made some renderings of the F-Type in XSI and got pretty much the same result as in max, but the rendering time was simply to long.
Markus

01-20-2003, 05:24 PM
I saw in Markus' post it said "(Mercedes Model by Daimler Chrysler)" Do you guys do the texturing and environment only? Or do you model the cars with the requirement that you must credit Daimler Chrysler and do not receive individual credit? Dimo did you model your Merc I didn't see the same credit at the bottom of your post. Just curious, those models are as close to perfect I've ever seen!
EDIT: Ah.... Markus posted at the same time and answered my question, thanx!!:)

I also thought about doing that. But after rendering a LowPoly Car with global Ilum, To get the diffuse Map (texture baking). Took me a couple of hours. Just for a 1024x1024 Map :thumbsdow
Another I see if U wanna use a Map with Shading Information U need to freeze the SubDivision Obj (because of the UV map...).
Isn't that in MAX the same? Should be. Because if U make the UV Map, the prog. use for example. 100points. But after applying MeshSmooth (SubDivisonSurfaceS) U get much more points. So the UV map is changed. :hmm:
That's how I see it.
But I like to know how much time it takes to bake a tex-map with FR (oh sure, also the computer spec)????
thnx.

We don't use texture baking on such comlex car models, we use traditional mapping. The car is rendered from front, side, back and top and then these images are projected onto the car(camera map projection works best). Blending is done with alpha channels. This method works fine with cars, because there is not much overlapping geometry.
B.t.w. max does not distort the texture coords when you apply meshsmooth.
Markus
i used that method to create the color-map for my lowpoly car
works very well
i'll give it a try on high-poly cars

Mid level polygon count (under 5000). Took about a week to develop.

And I also thing about how the roof wing will move at 300km/h...ever seen a race wing how much it moves at high speed? So your roof will may crack

Hey Dimo/Daniel what file format do you export your CATIA data out as ?? we do quiet abit of stuff with CATIA and Maya and find the iges files go wack..
And if anyone is wondering what CATIA is you can get some info from www.3ds.com the guys that make it..
CATIA is basiclly the bees knees when it comes to CAD/CAM etc very highend stuff and works very differently then Maya/Max/XSI/LW..

well I spend about 3 days and about 10 to 15 hours outa of them days modeling. I make my car models in Rhino with its happy little Nurbs.
I'm currently writing a new modeling tutorial from start to finish, From Rhino3D to 3Dstudio Max. Its going to be up on renderosity hopefully by the end of the week. I have about 8 pages in Word writen up. And allot of screen captures. I got about one or 2 more pages to go.
Here is a taste of the Progress,, its on modeling a lamborghini Miura

Grid, those Subaru there, is that inspired by those funky VW cartoons? I always hoped someone would model something like that, itīs great! Maybe a front perspective of that car? pleeeaaaaaaase :P
And shame on you letting that sportscar get rotten so much... Rust and flat tires... tztztz ;)

Hey munkmotion, I love your NSX!!!!
I just have a question for you about your tutorial, I was gonna E-Mail you, but then I though maybe it will help some other people.
Never modeled in NURMS that's why it may seem like strange questions....
1. -> For the fillet box, how big do you make it, or do you just just estimate the size??? It's kinda hard to align it too.
2. -> Does the fillet box have to be mesh or Nurms or what???
3. -> How hard, or easy is it to make the grilles on the hood, since there are no blueprints for that??
4. -> Do you model the whole car with extrudeing the faces?
5. ->Is your NSX all max or something else?
Thank you
And extra thank you for your time and skills on the tutorial, I REALLY APRECIATE IT!!!
Request. -> More car tutorials!! OR maybe a UVW mapping and shading tutorial
munkmotion
01-31-2003, 05:37 AM
Hi y'all.
Not sure if this is really the place for giving mesh tips to I'll make it brief...
first of all, box modeling is ALL mesh or "editable poly"... the smoothing is just a blanket on top of it.
1: Its all relative to the sizes and shapes on the model... look at my mesh to see the detail I used.
2: There is no "fillet box" as such, just any mesh object can be a start...
*edit - Oh I see what your saying now, yes the fillets, no there is no set size, its all relative to the detail that is nessesary on that particular part, just mesh. yes it is hard to align sometimes... *
3: That is why I reccomend buying the model, some things you cant see in blueprints.
4: Yep, the whole car... The NSX started as it did in that tutorial. It all starts from one peice of mesh... much like a tree in a forest in the spring time in an ancient chinese forest it grows and...
5: All max. No plugins.
also there IS a UVW map section in my tutorial. starts here (http://www.munkmotion.com/tutorials/nsx/3e.htm)

winberg
01-31-2003, 10:16 AM
Maybe I can answer your question, Jurenic..SInce I wrote that tutorial...
The "fillet box" or "corner" if you like are made using a box...
It can be a bit hard to allign, but you dont have to rotate it, just drag the vertices to aproximately align to the splines directions..
Then you have to delete the faces on the box facing away from you...(when you look at the corner of a box, you will see 3 faces, delete the three other one..)
After placing a meshsmoth modifier on this, you will see a nice rounded corner...
Regarding the size, this is just something you should eyeball, try to keep it quite small, to get nice "sharp" edges...
-Tom
