When making concept art, is it necessary that each one is an entirely original idea? i mean is it still ethical to build your designs on top of someone else's? like a new character design based on some existing character done by another arist? or a new mech based on an existing design?

Sorry if it seems like a silly question. I guess I just don't want to get caught in intelectual property rights. :D

Don't copy off of another artist. Finding inspiration in their work is fine.

It depends on if it's commerical or not. As long as you're stating where it's from or what it's based upon, you're fine. If it's for commerical use you may run into problems, as companies are very protective of their IP.

People do redesigns all the time.
