View Full Version : Jason Lavoie - Summer Project
Jason-Lavoie 06-23-2006, 10:35 PM Hey all, got some new stuff to show, YEAHH!
For this summer, me and a good friend (programmer) have put our crazy minds together, and decided to embark on a project for our portfolios, and it just happens to be a game.
The game is currently called "Shattered Soul: A Demon's Tale" which is a 3d action/ adventure side scroller influenced by Viewtiful Joe.
Currently we have a nice strong team, awesome concept artist (Cold, I'm working with him on Southern Rise mod) and Tass, AWESOME voice actor who I worked with on Frantic Games - 1944 with http://www.gamingartist.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
This is what we have so far (art wise anyways) Right now we are basically just fleshing out the Gameplay and Story right now, we have officially started development though. Our goal is to have a BIG chunk of the game done by the end of summer, which will showcase the gameplay mechanics, 3 levels (one of training, one level of play, and one of a boss character). If we get a good enough response, we will continue to develop.
So currently I have started 3 models, and here they are :)

those are some pretty awesome models, im really liking the art style, hella reminicent of viewtiful joe, and thats not a bad thing :D couple questions: what engine are you guys using? do you have any coders on board? looking at the breif over view you have stated above, i dont think it is terribly feasable to have that many elements by the end of summer. im not trying to be harsh , just realistic. if you are still designing the game that alone could take up to amonth or so, probably should if you want things to go smoothly in production. and 3 levels, one with a boss fight? id maybe shoot for training and 1 playable level. that is of course ig you guys are not working on it atleast 8 hrs day...if you are :D g'iver shit! the design so far looks freakin awesome anyways! this would definatly be something i would want to play. sorry if i seemed a little pessimistic but tis really good to set reachable milestones for a productoin to flow forward. anyways good luck and would love to hear more about this. you guys have a site for it yet? :D cheers

i think i gonna follow this project closely. i love small rushed project.
but i second ts_falcon on the feasability of the project. if you have ; at least a completed & playable level at the end of summer that would be enough IMO
anyways. go for it and have fun guys ! thats the more important part.

Falcon I could kiss you man :)
I love hearing crits man, and your is the most valuable to date. I think you are absolutly right my friend :)
I'll go more in depth in what we have right now. The story is done (it's a pretty basic story, but with Cold as our concept artist, he wiull bring it to life) Between levels, there will cutscenes (comic type style) that our concept artist is drawing out right now. Programming wise, we are still talking about Engine's and what not. This may actually become a little TC mod for UT04, lessons the work load, great documentation, awesome tools etc. Art wise, well, not that much done (what you see there is what we have) So you are right man, the goal I have set is higher than what we will achieve this summer, and right now I am going through everything, and just changing a timeline around.
I think what would should really focus on, is getting the game mechanics down, and one level, which wil be the training level. Again, this is going to be used for practice, and portfolio use, so we arn't trying to dazzle the world, but we do want to create somewhat of a polished demo. So now I must shift our prospective to a more realistic goal :)
Right now we have a solid, small team (very talented bunch of people, plus I know they are hard working, and its small, I love small teams) But that means it is going to take longer, which is fine :)
We have Me - the modeler, Nick - awesome programmer/ coder, Cold - Crazy concept artist, and Tas - talented Voice actor and sound effects guy :)
Thanks for the awesome crit man, sometimes (always actually) I do get ahead of myself, and I am glad you pulled me back to earth. New goal is to get the game mechanics set out, and hopefully, have 1 playable level (tutorial) for the end of summer. Do you think that is a more reachable goal?
If you have any more pointers, please tell :)
Thanks man.
Oh, and almost forgot, here is a little teaser, just a story board for the first scene. Our concept artist skectedh it up quick (wait till you see what this guy can do), but man I still love it :)

man tht is one of the best responses to crits ever :D yea definatly the traingin level should be your goal mate, that way like you said you can focus on the gameplay mechanics and really make it tight. another thing i would highly reccomend is having a really in depth design doc at some point, you never know who you might meet who knows a publisher...:D if 10% of life is documentation things will go really smoothly, so document everyhting the good and bad of production so if your tem does another project you can have a systemized approach. there is a really good book out there called the game production handbook, it really covers good tips for a smooth production as well as breakdowns of industry roles. worth every penny, it really opens your mind and helps plan production cycles. check it out at this link:
Game production Handbook (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1584504161/sr=8-1/qid=1151130445/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-7311861-0423022?%5Fencoding=UTF8)
it doesnt try to teeach you how to make games with shit free ware engines or anything but focuses on the game industry from a producrers point of view. very cool. nice story boards by the way thats another good thing to have :D cheers hope to see some more art soon!
