i have a character made in max and have used the 3 point light setup.
I followed this tut -http://tutorial.stavit.cz/open.asp?ID=128
except i only used the first 3 lights. One spot to the left, one spot to right and one spot behind.
My problem is that some of the shadows appear a little to hard(see under chin for example).I am looking for a way to soften them.
I followed the above tuts settings for lighting, but if you cant be bothered to look here they are-
1Spot (left of character) Shadows on,Colour white touch of blue.Under Intensity/colour atten Multiplier set at 0.9
2Spot(right of character) Shadows off,Colour white,Multiplier set at 0.5
3Spot (up and behind character) Shadows on,Multiplier 0.9

She is very much wip and currently has diffuse, normal, opacity.A SSS Skin material also added, still to add spec.4700 tri's(that includes back pack, fire gun, axe, braces and belt. Not shown).

What type of shadows are you using? If raytrace, change to shadowmap, and then increase the "sample range" parameter of the shadowmap to get a softer shadow (and reduce the shadow size). Or even try area shadows, which start off hard where two objects meet and then slowly get softer the further way you get, which is the more realistic type.
