ok guys,
I guess this elly's about ready to be posted as a wip.
She's modeled after one of Salvador Dali's paintings, "les elephants", but it does kind of remind me of Tolkien's oliphants.

here is a preliminary look at the model

there are some stretching problems, i know
and I obviously haven't gotten to the legs yet (yikes!)
but give me some constructive feedback
-don't be too mean...an elephant never forgets

If you put fat legs I think better to it.

The Dali's elephant is too big for that thin legs....

more ups and anothers angles

PS: sorry for my baddly english.

Nibble,
here's a look at the real thing
I'm trying to stay pretty true to that.
Thanks for the post!

I understand what you really to try modeling....sorry my mistakes.

Comments:

If you thin more the joints makes some better.

And be careful for length of the legs...i see one or other legs with length is different of others.

i always visit your post, i like that thing to trying modeling..

Nibble,

I'm taking your advice and sliming down those joints.
thanks!

heehee:p
thanks

I'm still mapping like crazy-the legs are partway mapped. Now animating this puppy is going to be the real challenge.
Makes me yen for the ACS4 quadroped setup!!!

will post another pic soon

Hehe and just the other day I was actually wondering what it'd be like to do that exact image in 3d :) Looks good so far, keep it up!

yeah! wanted to try this painting for a long time and have seen it done to varying degrees of success before - but yours is looking good. will keep an eye on it - think i'll have to try the flaming giraffe now just to be different.

Yeah, he he, I'm working on this for a project, but I've had this idea for a long time. I figured I better go ahead and stake my claim before someone else does

anywho...
Here's the next in the series.
Yes the blending between the legs and the body looks :thumbsdow , but I workin' on it.

anybody tried the sss plugin for lightwave yet?
I want to use it for the ears if it's any good

Looks very nice. The bump map you have on the second image is way too large, (i.e way to over scaled). I think it should be tighter. Look at some elephant images and I think you will know what I mean.

I like this. Keep on going.

BgDM,

by second image you mean the legs, right?

cause the second pic I posted Has the exact same maps. Maybe I'll need to increase the bump for far away shots.

lookin' to improve, thanks for the tip

can't wait for some close-ups with sasquatch elephant hairs

ps anybody got any tips to make it look dirtier?

Great work!
I am a HUGE fan of Dali's work, so seeing people modeling his creations really puts a smile on my face! Keep it up! :)

My goal is - when I have enough skill - to 3D model an entire Dali painting, and do a short animation of the camera cruising around the painting... and maybe some movements of the characters...
It can be extremely cool !

Good work so far!

I know it's been a while, but i've been working on the elephant hearder for the short. He's gonna look kinda' like a cross between Ghandi and a mummy once I add wrinkles etc.

Hiding seams in uv maps is not fun :annoyed:
but I'm really learning a lot about uv mapping just by running into problems. I still wish there was this miracle easy peasy uv unwrapperthat would magically solve all o' my mapping issues
-sigh-

still freaky as hell! the only crit i have is that his skin is a bit too shiny for me... i dont know what look you are going for, so it might totally be what you tried to get.

he just looks a bit plastic :)

otherwise, i love the character.

yeah, i agree the shininess is a problem...especially in the lips...looks like he has lipbalm on or something...but on the skin i think that you could acutally make it look more like sweat...but i dont know what you are going for....he looks fantastic anyways :applause:

I must say, I'm a huge fan of Dali, and I'm glad to see someone doing a rendition in 3d. One thing I noticed is that the legs on your elephant are too thick. If you look at Dalis version, the legs seem to get continuously thinner from top to bottom. Yours become fatter at the joints, and again at the base. Dont get me wrong...i think its looking pretty good...i only bring it up cause you said you wanted to stay true to form. Keep up the good work.

digital_rhino, I think I will take your advice and see how spindly I can get them. I can't wait till it all comes together and you guys can see the "big picture"

Tikisan, Ya' gotta keep lip balm on in the desert, right? ;)
I got rid of some of the spec. (maybe even a little too much)
It's amazing how long one can spend tweaking, ain't it!

I finished the bottom half texturing too.
wadaya' think?
more to come...

looking really awesome, i am glad that someone is modeling that. My only suggestion is that the legs on your model look a little too meaty at points. If you are really going for the dali elephant, try and make the legs even more thin and spidery. In dali's picture, they are so thin that they seem to dissappear in some places.

but thats just a small crit, it's really coming along.....

Here's a pic of my elephants in 3d frame to get the look of a picture coming to life. Going to add a few more cobwebs later to the elephants.

sorry, it's hard to get excellent pic with just 20k
