I am working on a commercial perhaps to be sold, but mainly to improve my CG-skill.
My aim is to get closer to realistic rendering (the beer), fur and hair and perhaps also realcamera/3D integration.

Maya is used as software, mental ray for rendering, Photoshop and After Effects for postproduction.

Here we go starting with the initial sketch of the horse:

here is the story in sketches of the key images

and a pdf with the idea lined out

here is the translation of the 2D sketch into 3D with maya fur and hair.
Working with both (fur&hair) for the first time, I was really pleased with the logic setup facing no bigger problems. mainly because the presets are instrucive and adaptable.http://www.brain-one.at/mmm/cgpics/horse/pferd1.5.jpg

the trikies part were the reflections. the horse needs to be black and it is indispensible to get good specularity / reflections esspecialy on the fur to see the hair.

I updated the shape of our little friend a bit, mainly the eye

here is a turnaround to see fur better
roto3_sor3.mov - 1.3MB (http://www.brain-one.at/mmm/cgpics/horse/anim/roto3-sor3.mov)

I didnīt spend too much on the character developement, so I am fine with the look of horse. my only crit is the eye, although there is a specularity on the eye you dont see any highlight and it looks to dark. I will ad a faked highlight (like in the earlier version).

playing arround with the beer now.
modeled with nurbs - the shader is a mental ray dielectric material (dont have the l-glass shader for it is not compiled for mac yet)
GI and FG are used ... some dirtmap will be added in post.
Look at this turrnaround to see it in motion:
beer_rotation_sor3.mov - 980kb (http://www.brain-one.at/mmm/cgpics/horse/krug/glas1-sor3.mov)

http://www.brain-one.at/mmm/cgpics/horse/krug/roto.20.jpg

I think the glass and the beer looks pretty ok now (allways open for crits and improving recomendations)
for the foam I use a shader called "snow" found on highend3D (http://www.highend3d.com/), but it still looks a bit flat.
I will try some discplacement, subsurfacescattering, or modelling some irregularities (bubbles) into the foam.
Perhaps someone knows a good technique on how to improve the foam.

also there should be some bubbles inside the beer and perhaps some foam rinning down at the side.
see this reference image that I use as a guide.
http://www.brain-one.at/mmm/cgpics/horse/krug/biergarten.jpg

the caustics I will fake with a masked spotligh.

Looks great mimo8,

Did you render that .mov in afterEffects?

If you've got a spare moment check this out:

sorry for answering so late.
yes it was edited in after effects, but the compression is done in Final Cut Compressor.

... now here is a little update.
Polished the gallopp, now it looks pretty ok and toony to me, just the tail is a bit to nervous.
