View Full Version : rigid body, self propelled by forces

hi there.
im planning to to a spacecraft which has navigational thrusters all around it, pointing in every direction. to make the animation plausible, i had in mind to make the ship a rigid body and attach forces where the thrusters should be. by animating the strength of the forces i can then move the ship.
i made some test, because i thought i would create an dependency loop if the force that affects the ship is a child of it. so my test scene looks like this:

[img=http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/7944/explorer8ua.jpg] (http://imageshack.us/)
the cylinders are rigid bodies and constrained together by a fixed constraint. the force is a child of one of the cylinders.
it actually works quite well, the cylinders start spinning and accelerate all the time, because the force stays with them.
but after 200-800 frames xsi quits. no error message, nothing. it just isnt there anymore.
and this happens every single time.
so here my questions:
has anyone enough insight in whats happening to explain the crash or knows how to avoid it?
does anyone know an alternative approach to propell the ship?
looking forward to your suggestions
