View Full Version : How do I render for WiP posts ?
BadSpleen 06-22-2006, 09:17 AM hehehe, the question is a bit of a teaser to make people come read this thread as the question is quite badly worded, and makes me sound like an idiot !!
What I mean to ask is how do I render a model WITH the wireframe on it, in 3D Max.
It's probably something stupidly simple, but I can only get it to render wireframe, or solid model, not a solid model with the edges drawn on. The reason I ask is so I can post WiP and have a better looking presentation of the edge loops on the model. I understand I can do a screen dump, but I want to make "nice" renders, with the wireframe.
All the best to any answers.

thats a good question, check out this guys site and look in the tutorials section and read the hiddenline render one. uses some combustion for compositing but if you know how to use photoshop it can do the same thing.

personally if its for a WIP thread, just set up the viewport with shaded wires, and press printscreen. esp for realtime stuff it works just fine

3Dnuts offer good solutions for wireframe rendering and also clay rendering...

...and for realtime models I think 'printscreen > paste in photoshop' works best :)

**shoot, ElFuego said it before me :buttrock:
another way I picked up from cgtalk is clone your model, make a copy, then add a push modifier, with that done, and your new cloned model selected, goto your materials and select a new sphere thingy, check the wire box in one of the rollout and thats it, that wire should render ontop of your grey/textured model.
srry I haven't got max with me at the moment

there's also a script on www.scriptspot.com that automates this process for you.

I wrote a short tutorial about rendering wireframes without any plugins or this ridiculous 'clone and push' workaround, it can be found here (http://www.military-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67)
The material(up from ver6) resulting from this can be downloaded from my signature.

for wireframe instead of wasting 4 mins rendering why not making a nice print screen ? it will be more truthfull to how it will look ingame.

Yeah, a screen-grab of your viewports is usually sufficient.
Just hit the Print Screen button on your keyboard and then paste it into Photoshop (I find www.irfanview.com helpful here, faster than waiting for PS to load) then crop the bit you want and save it.

xn view is also a good choice, besides exporting for more than 100 formats and read some more, its way faster to load besides paint.
there is a button (atlest in max8) in tools>grab viewport. Just to speed up the photoshop process ;)
