View Full Version : mib_glossy_ref Mental Ray tests

Hi I've been doing mib_glossy_ref tests and thought I share.
All of these test have the reflection and reflection enviroment on 1.00.
The only settings I change are
reflection base
reflection edge
I have some other tests cooking, adjusting the reflection and reflection enviroment.
I'm finding a lot of these tests show over bright reflection errors so I'm thinking
i must start using the physical settings of having each value adds to 1.00.
I really need to read up on the mib_glossie_ref docs, I'm flying blind doing these tests. :)
Hope these are of some help.

Also it would be good to have a Mental Ray forum here, I've noticed theres lots
of action in the maya forum related to Mental Ray and not much action in the softimage forum. Most of the tests done there can be translated to all OEM versions of mental ray.
I do realise theres lamrug, but theres a lot more people here.

"Most reflective materials reflect more at glancing angles, and transparent materials transmit more at facing angles. This rebalancing between reflectance and transmittance was discovered by Augustin-Jean Fresnel in the 19:th century and is known as a "fresnel effect". These shaders allow different weights to be set for "edges" (glancing angles) and "base" (facing angles) to emulate this effect. In the mib_glossy_* shaders, this effect is calculated per sample instead of as a global weighting of the entire reflection for greater realism."

Yeah thanks lulu I knew it was there I've been through Mental Ray docs a couple times.
Sometimes i just like to fly blind and see what I get by tweeking values.
I understand the Frensel effect I was just showing what different settings do.
