I'm the guy that advised you! :)
Anyway, I am looking for a site I know of with a car tutorial as well as some links to a basic spline tutorial to get you started. I don't use them, but surface tools do not blow! I have seen some of the best models from max users that use surface tools. I'll post the tut when I find it.:beer:

EDIT

Here is the car tut, I think somewhere on this guy's site there is a link to a basic tut for using splines.

megaflaizer, check out this guys' newest car model, and then tell me that surface tools suck! I am actually going to give them a try when I have the time, right now I am a poly-modeling/meshtools advocate.

dude....

I don't know ANYONE who has found that rhino head tutorial useful... besides, it's a crappy looking head.

-just my 2 cents.

i realize my words were a bit harsh.

however, i still stand by my assessment of 'it blows'

let me tell you why.

in surface tools, you must manually adjust the tangency of every vertex. the problem is compounded by the fact that vertex intersections form the basis of the lattice mesh used to generate surfaces. so you get these fourway cluster ****ed vertex handle monstrosities, pinched surfaces, etc.

bottom line. surface tools is not for me.

how much easier is it to just do this:

Jimcoldt, If DJ-ZoMbiE is going to model with splines, then the tutorial is just way to learn the technique. I agree the rhino head doesn't look great, but it's not meant to be a portfolio piece, just a lesson on how to use some tools. :rolleyes:

Look how dumb i am..
i downloaded this tutorial,(video) the alien head, and i've started modeling it, at the start, it told me to make a square>convert to editable poly... and select 1 side, and delete.. and then i modeld in left view, Wrong side, when i was finished, i looked at it, turned it, and it had a biggg hole in it, wich should of being on the other side, LoL
so now i have to start allover again :(
