View Full Version : Simple?? SQUASH Question
VonDrake 01-14-2003, 07:08 AM Anyone know how to get the squash deformer in Maya to squash not from the center of an object, but from the base?
Seems like it should be a basic command or tweak, and it sure would help with bouncing balls and such.
HELP!

To alter this, simply grab the top handle and move it down towards the center cirlce. The nearer the center that 'cross hair' is, the less affect the squash will have on the top of the ball.
Those handles at the top and bottom are similar to bounding boxes, the control the squashes field of control.
Another way, which might be better is to take your object, lets say a simple sphere. Group it and set the groups scale handle at the base of our sphere (using insert key) now right click over the Group node in the outliner. Select 'Show Attributes' from the menu. Now open the list by pressing the + symbol and go to the 'Scale' function. Open it the same way. Double click on 'Scale X' and enter this in the expression box:
sx = 1/sy
click create. Now open the 'Scale Z' and enter this in the expression box:
sz = 1/sy
click create.
now back out of all of that and click on the scale handle for the group. You will notice you no longer have control over the x and z functions, that is because they are driven by the expressions you just wrote. Move the y handle up and down and you will notice that the sphere maintains the same volume by expanding in the x and z directions. The reason you created the group is simple. Now select the sphere and you still have control over its x, y and z functions. The link for the squash and stretch is with the parent node, not the sphere. Total flexability. Maya rules.
This is way more wordy than you had hoped i am sure, but i hope it was understandable and not patronizing in any way.
