View Full Version : Character: Turtle Dove
HieSpike 01-14-2003, 03:52 AM Hi all....
Just finished making the Turtle Doves that will be in my animated short "Ara's Flight". These birds will be in the animation with the boy named Ara I posted here before.
Hope you all like it...Now I've gotta figure out how to animate it.

Very nice work. One of my next challenges is creating a bird and yours is very inspiring.
Very nice animation too. A couple of things I noticed...
Bend the wing bones in more on the upsweep.
Pull the feet up so they're tucked right into the body
The tail doesn't move up and down as much as this, the tail mostly rotates on the boy axis to help manuvering.
Can you tell us more about how you rigged the bird? Do you have bones for every feather? I especially like what you've done with the folded wings, they look great from what I can see :)

thanks kretin,
I've fixed the tail and the feet....still working on the upsweep.
I actually did this in Lightwave and I used morph mixer to do the animation on every part of the bird.
What's really cool is that I'm using motion mixer to create different flapping motions and landing and takeoffs and mixing them in premeir style linear editing!!!
This is saving me some major headaches...especially since if I need to adjust the speed of the flight, I can just scale the one envelope for all the morphs!
I'm also still working on the wings tucked position....it's probably the thing that's driving me the most crazy.

Great idea using morphs and motion mixer.
I want to make the wing movement use bones, with a healthy mix of joint morph to move the feathers properly. My birds are characters in a video, so I'll need more expressiveness in the wings than morphs will easily cope with. I'm thinking that i'll also include the ability to move the primary feathers like fingers, but gotta see if that's gonna work nicely.
I'm still investigating just how the wing bones in birds work to fold/tuck the wings, certainly the most complex part of a bird.
Depending on how close you're gonna get to the bird, you may want to create the mantle and auxiliary feathers, to bridge the area between the body and wings.
Can't wait to see your next anim...

Hi Rohith,
The reference I used for the dove came from some sources online, but mainly from digital pictures my girlfriend took at her work place (where they obviously have doves :). If you give me your email I can send you some of the photos.
peace out,
Nice work....can't think of anything to crit on so i'll leave it at that:)
