hi all,

i'm a newbie having a problem with extruding faces..

the extruding part is straight forward..
but, i'm having problems scaling 2 faces...

i'm following a tutorial from an older maya book (Learning Maya 2)

in the tutorial, two faces are extruded then scaled smaller.

i'm able to scale both faces in the Y axis, with no problem,

but, when i scale them in the X axis, the faces scale toward each other instead of in their original location.

hope that makes sense, btw i'm using 4.5

please see the attached files:

-Ship2.jpg is what the tutorial shows.

-Ship.jpg is what i get.

thanks in advance.

Try turning on

Polygons/Tool Options/keep faces together.

I think thats the problem your having.

*edit* Im an idiot.. I didn't look at the pictures first.

The problem is you aren't using the extrude gizmo when your doing it.
You are using the scale tool.
After hitting extrude, use the scale of the extrude gizmo. Then scale it uniformly.

hey Rudity,

thanks for responding,

the problem is... i don't see the extrude gizmo.

i select both faces, then Edit Polygons>Extrude Face...

but there is no "extrude gizmo" (manipulator that has both Move and Scale inside a big circle, right?)

so i press 'R' instead...and that's where i get the problem...

is the V4.5 Extrude different from V2.5??

just figured it out, here it is for all those interested...

apparently, the History has to be on in order for the "Extrude Gizmo" to appear.

thanks again Rudity for responding......Go Leafs Go.. sorry i couldn't resist :)
