Hey guys, welcome to the SECOND STAGE of the FXWars challenge.
Now is where the fun starts, where we take the raw footage and add visual effects to it.
I would like to thank ALL who worked hard providing footage for the challenge.

THE DATELINE:

In order to give a fair chance to all, including new commer, we have pushed the dateline TWO WEEKS back. THE NEW DATELINE IS : Tuesday September 12th 12:00 PM

THE RAW FOOTAGE:

You can view the storyboards/ rawfootage available for ALL on this link:
>>LINK<< (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3647645&postcount=3)

IF YOU WANT TO JOIN...

Fell free to enter the challenge at any time. The idea of the Storyboards/ RAW footage provided on this threads is to allow ANYONE to do the challenge.. But READ THE RULES below. And don forget to give CREDIT to those whose footage you use.

IF YOU STILL WANT TO DO YOUR OWN FOOTAGE

Of course you DONT have to use the provided footage, and you DONT have to share the footage you produce.

Good luck to all

CgTalk:FXWars! SuperPower!

Composite War

From Wikipedia:
Superpowers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_powers_in_superhero_fiction), extraordinary powers or abilities possessed by fictional heroes, particularly superheroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superhero).

THE CHALLENGE:

Well the participants will be able to do a fx sequence based on the idea of Superpowers. The FILMED FX sequence requires that the "hero" character be a live action character.

Imagine filming a sequence of a man that can shoot fire from him hand, ot throw a car like a baseball. Now it is your chance.

Type of Entry__________________________________

The type of entry will be either

SINGLE SHOT
SHORT SEQUENCE
Topics__________________________________

All the work will be based on the following topics:

Grudge Match (Super power fight)
Rescue Me
Heist
Super Power Gags (Imagine a shot of a guy using his super power, like lifting a car, super punch etc) This type of entry is perfect for Single shots
Powers__________________________________

And to keep our sanity the superpowers should be picked from this list:

Flight
Power Ring
Super Strength
Super Speed
Stretching
Energy Blast (extra points if you use Kirby dots)
Electricity based power
Magnetism
Invulnerability
Ice Powers
Phasing powers
Click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_powers_in_superhero_fiction) for explanation of superpowers.

Teams & Freelancers__________________________________
Because of the complexity of the sequence team entries (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=370802)are STRONGLY encouraged.

There is another alternative for those who want to joi and dont want to limit themselves to ONE team. You ca become a FREELANCER.

The idea is simple, asset library threads for FINISHED assets will be opened. Team leads can can pick what they need for their shots. In these threads all kinds of assets will be ofered.

From storyboards to models, IF a team decided to use your FINISHED asset, you AUTOMATICALLY become part of the a team, and you will be credited..

The advantage of being a freelancer, is that you can participate in MULTIPLE teams with a smaller time participation.

We currently have FREELANCER threads for:

Storyboards/ Concept art (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=367309) (click to ADD asset)

Models (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=371801)(click to ADD asset)

Raw Film (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=353231)(click to ADD asset)

A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF what assets are available for all
can be seen below this thread of by clicking >>HERE<< (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3647645&postcount=3)

Core Ground Rules_____________________________

NO COSTUMES (Good God No), we don't need another Star Wars kid >>LINK<< (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_kid)
No established characters. The lawyers need a break.
No real life stunts.
Keep it family Friendly
The sequences would be made with live action with visual effects.
if you are doing a storyboard, keep in mind that people might use your boards for filming.
If you have an idea for a sequence or some concept art post it on this thread. I will later post some possible scenarios..
My advice, KEEP IT SIMPLE

Voting________________________________________

The best single shot/sequence will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Best Composite Work
Best Cinematography
Best Story
Best Editing
Best Visual Effects)
Best Overall Entry
The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

Jason Porath "BONEDADDY" notes:

ON FILMING_________________________________________________
Basically, we're just looking for a bit of a blueprint for this challenge. The topic is so far-ranging, that it'd be nice to narrow it down a bit. These boards just have to clearly show what action is going on in the scene.

Stuff we'll be taking into account (cause we'll be filming some of these):

1) Camera angles/framing -- make em interesting, but doable
2) Number of characters -- Not too many, please
3) Does it tell a story?
4) How difficult is it going to be to shoot?
5) How difficult is it going to be to do the effects?

Stay away from character design, because god knows who we're going to get to play these roles for the shoot. The part of beautiful D-cup heroine may be played by not-so-beautiful D-cup JimBob from next door. We're aiming for more shot design than character design. If you think a very specific environment is integral to your gag, I guess toss that in, but doing an entirely CG environment is going to ratchet up the difficulty, and probably make the feasibility of that entry pretty low (we'd likely need to get a greenscreen).

ON RAW FOOTAGE_________________________________________________

As for footage, I'd post it up in quicktimes, several different options. Have a sorensen3 for people to do quick proxy work with, and then a dv codec to do their real compositing with. If the guy filming it could de-interlace (and possibly de-artifact) the footage before putting it online, that would be spiffy too.

Most everyone will have to convert it to sequential image files (.tifs most likely), so having that as an option (in a .zip file) would be nice, but probably a bit space prohibitive.

Roberto,

I hope you do not mind me jumping in here.

I'd like to make an offer to host ALL the final entries to this challenge (and it is a great one). I have a high capacity dedicated server and would be glad to provide a unified solution so that my fellow CGTalkers don't need to jump through hoops to view the final entries.

Those making final entires can contact me via PM on this board.

Thanks, Good luck to all.

i want to do this and i have a cool little sequence that i would like to do but it includes sword fighting and i wanted to know if that constitutes a stunt?

if i get approval on this then i will start on a short script and storyboard...

i know alreaddy that i will need 2 females as the leads and 3 or 4 hostages... kinda a new take on the heist...

oh and i will need a place to stand in for a bank... i got an idea but i am not sure...

i also want to act in the d/fw area and have some cool ideas for where to film a matrixy type wherehouse sort of thing... if you have any questions let me know...

i will cross post into the other parts after i finish with this...

Thanks

Notorious comicbook artist Jack Kirby created them as a mean to depict energy in his pages.

You can get a glimpse of this artistic form of representation in the last panel of the page below.

The stunt rule is to avoid yahooo clumping off a roof and posting it as something cool.

"You may use a pre exiting models and filmed footage, as long as you have the rights to use them. If you use pre existing material CREDIT the source."

The key here is you have to have RIGHTS to use the work. It is amazing what you can find on the web, many times I've found an artist that isn't well known who will give me written permission to use their work providing they are credited and sometimes a link is pointed to their site.

You can do solo work, but keep in mind that we are doing a composite work.
Animation is ok, but you need to have live action in your scene, (you can record this with any video camera.
For example a guy that has electicity based powers cooks a flying dove,
etc..

Ok here is freebie for an animator who might want to join us.

You could record yourself hitting air with a tripod...
Convert the video to a sequece file
use the sequence file as a background for your cg package (all of them accpet them)
animate a gian robot getting hit ...
Light and render

Yea I agree. I think for this contest people should have to post a brake down list with their posted entry. Detailing the elements that are CG, and are real footage.

I'm going to try and do as little CG as possible. Smoke, dust, particles and things like that will be done from filmed footage.

Hi my name is Jaymes Poudrier. I'm new to CG Talk, and I'm fairly new to 3D, although I would like to beleive I show some promise as an artist. I would like to help any group willing to except me, and I'm not entirely useless. Although I have no proffesional background in the feild, and I don't have a large archive of concept art, models, etc. (Mainly because I just got Cable internet last week). However, I do have years of self teaching myself Zbrush, 3DS Max, and quite a long list of other miscellanious software inbetween. As of currently, I have only won an award for 3rd best 3D Student Animator in Massachussettes , awarded by SkillsUSA.
As I know I'm probably not qualified enough to even be considered for help on a project. I figured what the heck and deiced to post my help. Also, Since I am new I figured I would post a 'relevant to the challenge' video clip to show what I am capable.

SAMPLE SUMMARY:
I did this video a little while back to practice compositing video. I used 3DS Max for the flame and Sony Vegas to composite. Pretty much, the video is me throwing a fireball at the screen and summonig it back.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Hopefully I can be of some service, but, If I can't I wish good luck to all the competitors.

With unending gratitude,
Jaymes Poudrier

It reeks of an unfinished, last-minute, throw together effort, but I'll post it anyways.
