Title: Smile
Name: David Moratilla
Country: España
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

Hi all,
The beginning of this image was a face-modelling training, and then I complicate myself learning maya hair and misss shader. It has been a long time of tweaking the shaders, lightning setup , textures, and many test renders, of course.
This is the final result, I had to finish this some day :-)
I have used maya, mental ray for shaders and render, and photoshop for textures and final compositing
C&c are wellcome.

Certainly this is a five star work!!!

It really hides the technology and exposes the womans face as a classic art!!

Cheers dude!

This is a fantastic piece of work. My only real crit is that her eyes don't seem to be smiling, I can't really put my finger on it but something about her eyes (that said, making the eyes seem happy is one of those ridiculously difficult things that if you can do you're a true master). I think it's because the "eyelid" below the eye (rather, the skin below the eye) should go higher, thus making the eye a little more closed.

Here's a random pic I found when I typed smile into google: http://www.deathstar.org/~ainman/pics/gab.smile.jpg, notice how her eyes are more of an upward "crescent" shape because her bottom eyelid comes up.

That said, regardless, you still did a fantastic job and this is better than I could ever hope to do!

Very nice

She looks beautifull, and real.

There are a few issues, for example the skin seems to almost go white in a spot right belowe
her lower lip.
And maybe it is to dark inside her mouth? Otherwise it is great.

I think the eyes give the expression a bit of ambiguity. They're a bit wide and manic for a smileso it looks like she might be about to scream.

The shaders and hair are excellent.

Great work.

Fantastic work, the skin is really good, the hair is great...
Unlike the others i dont really like the expression though, It looks like a combination of suprised and smiling, her eyes are to wide open for it to be a smile. When you smile your cheeks lift, which slightly squints your eyes, but hers look more open than natural. Her mouth, also looks as if its not quite in a full smile.

Overall its really good though.

Many thanks to all for the comments, I really apreciate them :)

Well, I have to say that I didn´t wanted that she had a "big smile" or a laugh. I just wanted that she smile in a sweet-relaxed way. There are many kinds of smiles, and I think this is just one of them. Maybe this makes the final expression a little confusing, I don´t know..

Nice rendering, I like the skin. But the expression doesn´t work for me. If you want a subtle smile you must not show too much of the upper teeth. Also the cheeks doesnt really fit, not enough bunching here for such a wide smile. In addition to the raised eyes I would try to raise the eyebrowes a little bit, too.
And finally she needs some crowfeets for a better working smile. Hope this helps.

nice modeling and that hair looks great, the girl herself is clearly very beautiful, however at the moment not all that realistic; the render looks somewhat cartoony. the forms and shapes are a little bit oversimplified and the texturing is still somewhat plasticy (perhaps modify the illumination models a bit). also work a little more on the lighting, you're about 80% of the way there, but the additional push of working up on these areas could really make the difference between an ok work and a great work.

Great Work!

Would you give me an advice about MAYA Hair?
Your MAYA Hair result is amazing. Is this really by MentalRay? What kind of shadow did you use? I'm also struggling with MAYA Hair & MentalRay, but couldn't have reached to the satisfied result.

Thanks in advance.

very nice work overall, the only crits i have is that the refledtion in the eye, (in the white part) looks a little strange, and the pearly whites, look a little to pearly, otherwize its extreamly well done, mabie a little more chaos in the hair, great work. 4 star

Thanks to all for the constructive crits  I will keep in mind for the next works...

Renpoo:

Yes, it is maya hair. The lights are area lights with raytraced shadows, it´s a long time to render, but the results are OK. And receive shadows(mental ray) activated.
You have to render whit high samples values to avoid aliasing problems. I used min 1 max 4.

Excuse me.
I couldn't find the "receive shadows" attribute. Would you explain where it is more in detail?

Thanks in advance.

Renpoo:

It is in the Render Stats section of the hairSystemShape tab.
There you would find: Receive Shadows (mental ray)
