ahahahahaha!!! so funny it made me laugh out loud! :D
but I liked your sketch more! maybe try to push the eyes closer together, making the eyes a tiny bit bigger or something.
also the ears are to close to his eyes, maybe you wan't it that way, but I think you should balance it a bit more and pull them a bit back so there's not so much "backhead" without anything. but I'm not sure about my last suggestion, might look cool with the 'hat'! just throwing ideas your way :)

take care

Same critics than the Bastard...(Fellah i mean!)

Eyes are better on the sketch! Work more on the mesh to find the Goofy look you did on the draw!
Funny character! But what about the body? You didn't draw it!

For the ears, just push them back a little!

Really funny! I will take a look at it!

I have to agree with fellah on the eyes. They need to be bigger! They're the best part and make the character more comical. Also can't wait for the back story since it sounds like a pretty silly guy.

Fetus23
01-15-2003, 04:23 PM
Thank you all very much for the ideas!!!...I'm really happy all you artists like him so far....I will put all the crits to work soon, but for now a small update and some history on the fellow...

http://www3.telus.net/fetus/midearth8.jpg

-Gizzards-

-The Gizzards are thieves. articles of fabric are their main ambition, but pieces of gold are often sought, which is then used to fashion ear-rings and other jewlery. The gizzards are the evolved ancestors of a breed of lizards called Gillatronons. The Gillatronons once flourished in middle earth, but as the reign of terror passed by, as it does every 3600 years, the Gillatronons, under a canopy of flames were forced into the process of evolution. The comet that causes the shift of earth every 3600 years will return, causing yet another change.....

Fetus, that is looking fantastic :)

The only major crit I really have is that certain areas still look a wee bit boxy - like the fingers, and the abs. However, that won't take much tweaking to fix :)

You could possibly benefit from roughing things up a bit too - don't make everything so perfect! Those cool stitches down the front of his pants - they were obviously done by hand, so make them a bit higgeldy-piggeldy. Perhaps even have one of the threads missing?

His waistcoat is also a bit too straight-cut. Have a look at the waistcoat that Shrek wore - it's all nice and round :)

Give your stuff a more rustic look by adding more curves to the overall shapes of things.

Since he looks like he travels a lot, make sure that when you continue with the texturing, that you add mended tears and rips in his clothing, and add little patches here and there were he has had to patch his clothing. IF you look closely at Aragorns clothing in the LOTR films, you'll notice that his costume if full of little mended areas. It just gives the viewer a nice sense of where the character has been and gone :)

I can't help but think that this guy is Middle Earths version of Crocodile Dundee!! :D

dies-irae
01-20-2003, 07:51 AM
fantastic, it's got a lot of character!

only almost crits: the forehead was a bit shorter on the first images, i liked it a bit more, with the hat though, it rocks anyway!

Alright!!!

Time for some much need replies :

Leigh: Wow!! Thank you for the really good crits!! I do have to mess him up. I see that being a running theme in most of my models , I need more randomness in my 3D work to match my traditional stuff. Definatly something to do here, and in future works. I hope this update is a little better, I've tried to ruffle his cloths up a bit....Once again thank you for the very good advice!

dies-irae : Thank You!! :).

M@ : mmmmm magical hats.....:surprised

dur23: Thanks dir23!! Fashion..hmmm...is that done in 3d now??...messing him up now.....

Lukashi : Thanks mate!!

And heres a little update...trying to "mess him up".....Still have to work on his forearms, hands, feet, weapons, backpack, more trinkets and ropes....and perhapes a companion beast...

Fetus u know what i think! its awesome

but 2 things :

back of hands are full flat.. really makes the model less organic! model all the stuff there :)

2nd abs a bit boxy! make them more soft

but his persoantlity is Awesome!
and this suit much better then that old pants!

:wip:  :bounce: :scream:  :wavey:  :

fellah
01-22-2003, 01:46 PM
you are working hard fetus, great modeling far!
but I agree with Wiz about the hands and abs, maybe you could make his pectorals a bit "runder" to, not bigger. I know he is supposed to look like a skinny freak ;) but a little smoother, more organic would do fine, I think.

I think it will look awsome later on when make his expression/pose , the stiffness is killling him a little right now, but that's how it is with 3d wips :)

"model onward" :wip: ;)

take care

Wow, that's looking great Fetus :D:D

I really like the changes you have been making - they are helping to make him look more rustic and traveller-like.

I also like the skirt, as opposed to the skirt - it really suits him :)

Joel Hooks
01-23-2003, 02:57 AM
Nice update!

I think he needs some pouches on his belt for easy hiding of illgotten gains. Personally I liked the left nipple when it was pointing to the side, but the right looks great pierced.

I'd consider turning the hem of the skirt so it has a nice thick feel too.

lowdown : Great idea with the pouches!! Added them aswell as some bottles. Also, I'm changing the skirt to make it look thicker. Great ideas man.. Tall Thanks!! :D

Blue Couger : Wide Thanks!!

lildragon : High Thanks!! ;) Great idea for hand wrinkles. I'll see what i can do with that. I'm not sure how much i want to leave to texturing at this point.

An update :

http://www3.telus.net/fetus/midearth32.jpg

I've worked on the feet a bit, any suggestions there would be great....sandles?...bandages?...or just hairy bare feet? Trying to get a pleasing shape to them. The hat is gone for now, it might appear later...

I love the feet! They fit exactly how I would imagine if I saw the top half only. Superb work on the feet (as well as the rest). Since his neck sticks out a tad he would need bigger feet. Nice vision

Thank you all for the very kind words!!!

Heres a small update. I've got 2 different styles for him here. The one on the left is more rustic and dirty looking. The right one is more on the cartoony end. I preffer the one on the left so i think thats where the textures will lead.....what do you all think?? Getting some creatures in those cages this weekend... :)

http://www3.telus.net/fetus/midearth35.jpg

I really do like the left one better but raytracing shadows in maya is soooo slow...any suggestions here would be really good! :)

Mentat7

I don't know much about Maya so I can't help you there, sorry. But I like the color of the one on the right and I like the look of the one on the left. Maybe a cross between the two...and dirty up the clothing a bit? Just a humble suggestion. I love those cages.

Lukashi
01-26-2003, 03:50 AM
Cute little creatures, i think it would balance out if you put the right creature in the left cage and vice versa, itd be really cramped for the left creature, but thats life ;), might be funny too :)

Joel Hooks

I think a dead animal (chicken) bones would be cool in one of the cages, with some straw or something as a liner. This gets back to the earliear animation idea of him eating live chickens.

That skirt still needs a hem at the bottom, or it needs to get ragged (maybe a bit of both?)

This guy is killer, you've done some great work here.

You have a great model here in this challenge also! The texture looks really nice also and you still have a month to go! My only crit with this guy is your eye texture, I think its dropping the quality of the character a little. If you can find a realistic eye texture, I would suggest using that instead, everything else though is just great. Keep the detail and updates coming!

That's looking fantastic so far, Fetus
This one is one of my absolute favourites in this challenge! :applause:

The only crits I have, are that the bump map on the body looks a little too big - the details are too deep, looking too much like gouges, instead of wrinkles :)

The nipple ring is also sticking through the waistcoat.

And lastly, I think you really need to add some kind of edge to the bottom of the waistcoat.

But otherwise, it's AWESOME!

excellent! good work fetus, it's getting better and better, keep it up!!
the eye texture update is cool but it still looks like a globe with a texture on it. The nostrils look strange too.
Yet it's still great, that's all nitpicking; but you know, for the eyes, I really think it should enhance your model and make it more alive ...

Mtmckinley: Thanks but i still think they need tweaking....I've got some stretching going on with some of the blendshapes that i need to sort out...also might repaint the bump map with a higher rez...gotta get to it..:wip:

Alright heres the update...
The BOTTOM MIDDLE, BOTTOM LEFT and TOP RIGHT have modeled eyes...I really think it looks alot better what do you think?

http://www3.telus.net/fetus/midearth67.jpg

fellah
02-08-2003, 09:01 AM
hey, you can really tell which eyes are modeled and which ones are not, this is a really good example to show everyone that modeled eyes add alot.
I don't know if you have made this, but it looks so on the bottom left eyes, but not on the top right one. darkened the top 50% of the iris a little, it will give alot of depth to the eyes. try and take away that dark part on the bottom left eyes, and you'll see how much "worse" it will look.

and I agree about the bumpMap res to, it would look better if it where a bit more highRes.

for some reason I like the bottom left one(even without the great looking eyes) it might be because of the strong/powerful colors compared to the others, maybe you should go in that direction(not to much though)

oh, and maybe you could add some bloodVessels to his eyeBalls to. it would fit this character well imo,

just ideas :)

model/texture onward!! :wip: ;)

HEY FEATS! YOUR GIZZARD IS LOOKING GREAT! :applause:

My favorite two expressions are the ones in the middle (looking overly pleased and unimpressed). :xtreme:

I do, however, think in my professional body modifer opinion that the nipple ring is the weakest part...

A 'good' nipple piercing should be through the AREOLE directly behind the 'bump' of the nipple.

Wow, that's awesome! Those eyes are particularly good - it just goes to show what a difference it makes to actually model the eyes correctly ;)

Although this might be a little gross, it might be kinda cool to add some dried crusties around the nostril area... Just a thought.

You could also make the areas around the eyes appear wet, using a spec map ;) That would give it a nicer sense of realism, I think :)

KingMob
02-10-2003, 12:29 AM

Think I'll tone it down a bit though, so it dosen't look to much like plastic...but i really think it added alot of realism to him. Thanks again leigh!!!

hey, wow! that specularity/wet look really added alot!! I love those last 2 renders on the face, so much better!
one thing though, the hmm.. "skin" under the eyes looks to "lose", for my liking will say. like the eye ain't attached, like it's floating around inside there. you get my point? just pull those lids closer to the eye. could be better if you made the same thing to the "top lids".
oh, and the nostrils look to sharp, I would have made them softer, more organic. just smooth that hard edge out a little.
but that is just small things. I really love the wet look you gave him, it really added alot!

stop texturing/modeling onward!! ;)

Fetus, that looks great :applause:

The spec map really makes him zzzzing!!! Totally cool!

The only other thing I can now suggest is for you to add some more finer details into your bump map - at the moment, most of your bump details are pretty bold - try adding in thinner, finer wrinkles here and there - especially under the eyes and around the mouth.

Having the spec map there now will also help to enhance the bump map, so fine details do show up nicely :)

wow, fetus you have worked hard and it's paying of!

I have some suggestions though,

the weapon, or the blade of the weapon looks very "clay'ish", to soft to be able to chop something of. I think it's mainly because the corners are soft. I suppose it should be some kinda metal, so sharper corners are a must!
and the material, it could be cool to add a little dirt along the "tip" of the blade. and maybe a little reflection..

also, I think you should reduce the "glow" effect you have around your character.

oh, and I really liked the white skinlook you had in one of the previous closeups of his face. maybe try that one? it could be cool, you never know! :)

just suggestions, it's already fine as it is, but you can always polish a little :)
take care

Well, first of all: great char! I really like the combination of an happy character and really big weapon...

Okay, on to the C & C:

-He looks too clean. Perhap you're gonna do this, but he needs dirt and grime. IMHO, Middle Earth isn't clean ;)

-The silver piece in the axe handel seemingly falls out any minute.

-Like is said before, the Axe seems to soft. In fact, in my eyes, it's melting!

That's all. Continue ;)

M@ Thanks man! about the hands..grrr ;)...I'll work on that, could just be the bone weighting which im still sorting out...

Dreamwave - Thanks alot !! heres the requested background info..

-The Gizzards are thieves. articles of fabric are their main ambition, but pieces of gold and jewlery are often sought, which is then used to fashion ear-rings and other useless ornaments. The gizzards are the evolved ancestors of a breed of lizards called Gillatronons. The Gillatronons once flourished in middle earth, but as the reign of terror passed by, as it does every 3600 years, the Gillatronons, under a canopy of flames were forced into the process of evolution. The Gizzards are the result of this evolution. At first they thieved for necessity and survival but as they flourished thier needs turned into to greeds. The comet that causes the shift of earth every 3600 years will return again, causing yet another change.....

it's nothing much, I say this because I "wanna help you to do it as good as it can be, so you can kick my butt in the finalvoting." (hehehehehe! ;) beat that one little m@ :) )

I subscribed to your and Leighs threads from the very start, just to track your progress. Between the two of you my cgtalk mail doubled. It's a sign of your relationship with the community and the appreciation of your work. I noticed you personally commenting on all the entries. This is exactly what I mean about your relationship with the community.
Great work on the Gizzard, I'll keep an eye out for your future work.

Fetus-

This thread really made me realize that i need to follow WIPS fully through. Your final result is SO cool.

I just noticed the page (way back there) where you went from textured eyes to modeled eyes. HOLY COW that looks better.

Is there any place where I could see a tutorial on modeled eye setup? I tried searching cgtalk...but the word EYE is not searchable :annoyed: ...too short. I would love to get into modeled eyes.

Hellwolve : Thanks you! (answer : :D )

Lukashi: Thanks mate!!..I really hope you join and FINISH ;):) the next challenge!!

giantrobot : Thank you for the kind words!! Here is a tutorial on how to model an eye. It should give you the general idea for the shape and parts. For a much nicer and realistic eye, textures should be used for color, specular, diffuse, and bumps instead of the ramp shader they use.

http://www-viz.tamu.edu/students/jinnah/617/anatomy/eye_tut.htm

Its also a very good idea to have a look at some medical diagrams of an eye to get a better feel for whats actually in there...here is a link for that..

http://www.coloradohealthsite.org/eyehealth/eyehealth_diag.html?printit

Once again, Thank you for the kind words and I hope this helps you begin your quest for realistic eyes!!!

That second site is great, thanks!

Hey Fetus, looking thru your thread again I must say you got some serious skill with texturing, care to show your UV layouts? would really love to see how you attacked it. I can't see to find any form of stretching, pinching or seams in your maps. Incredible work man...

Hey lildragon thanks again!! :) Well this is my first fully textured character so I'm still learning alot as I go. Here are some of the projections...They'll be cleaner on my next model...especially the face :)...

Gizzard projections (http://www3.telus.net/fetus/gizzardmaps1.jpg)

Also, this video tutorial REALLY helped me understand texturing and UV's in maya, handeling stretching and seams etc....(thanks a bunch to dur23 for this link)

I hope this helps you out!!
