This was NOT done in the given period of time, but since it was a self-modeling thread I figured i'd post it. This was actually for a class of mine. It was my first model over 500 poly's and my first time texturing- we had to model and texture our entire selves in a little over 3 weeks. This is just a render of my head. The textures arent completely finished as you can probably tell.

no photoshoping in that image :D... and about the light... yeah, now I'm a blind animator, but I'm like daredevil, I can see with the sound of every pixel shouting after being excited by an electric particle! muahahaha... neh, seriously, that light doesn't hurt much  I want to make a little stop motion animation scanning my face ... hehehe... we'll see (I hope)

lol... Those two phrases just roll beautifully together... The makeup phase will be when the fun really starts me thinks... Thanks again rattler for sparking my interest, this is just what I needed:bowdown:
and WOW! Tobey.. Your real face has such classic sculptural details- Chin, cheekbones, lips, nose, brow... This is a pretty wierd thread already so I don't feel too outta place saying I envy your bone structure. Your mesh is a solid start too:thumbsup: Welcome...

Wow DaddyMack! Thanks a ton for keeping me motivated. That has got to be the most flattering thing anybody has ever said to me. Still, my modeling skills aren't as good(or fast) as my competitors...
I was thinking for makeup, having the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra inked in Japanese caligraphy like in Lafcadio Hearn's mimi-nashi-hoichi(耳なし芳一) (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/19/Kwaidan_dvd.jpg). What do you think?
I'll update my progress later tonight.

Seriously tho... I just call 'em how I see 'em...
Playtimes over tho... I've gone final on my max mesh (all quads and my cleanest work to date) and I am gonna see if I can get the overall structure corrected in Z... Back soon hopefully with some improvements:wavey:

Thanks for your support Raven. Your entry is looking fantastic. It looks very much like the mugshot your posted. BTW, your shading/lighting is very nice. What setup are you using? Is it a green light or the skin shader that makes it look that way?
I have a question about working from photoreference, which I don't have much experience with. After modeling my mesh over a photographic backdrop in orthographic view, the result doesnt look correct in perspective view because a photo is obviously not orthographic. How do you guys work around this? 45 degree view? Model in perspective view? Both?
And my progress: I've been mostly focusing on getting my mesh down and the edge loops anatomically correct as Ive only modeled one partial head prior to this competition. As soon as I work out the lower ear/neck and fix the nose furrow I will focus on making it look more like me.

3dRaven: hey raven...thats really nice.
tobeythorn: hey man..your modeling is looking very good from my point of view...very clean mesh...and well about photo reference youre right , i decided to stop using front and side pictures as blueprints on my view port, i have double display , so what i do now is to put three pictures inside one monitor (front, side, perspective), and try to model by looking at them in the other monitor...is almost like sculpting or drawing using a real life model.
AtomBaker
06-24-2006, 04:20 AM
Yeah, I don't like using orthographic photos either. The photo layout on the side seems good. I honestly did mine using a small mirror (about head size).
I also have a question though, rattlesnake. Are the rules for this unofficial competition very strict. My face has become a mask, so, it seems only right to have something representing me using this mask. Not a full character. It would still just be a head shot.
Just wondering, wouldn't wanna spend the time at it, then get bawled out and forcibly ejected from the forums, doomed to roam the barren wastelands of a post-apocalyptic ruin of what was once my favorite thread.
errr, I mean.... Yeah. hehe. Wouldn't wanna blow the time, and overstep the thread boundaries.
Once again, tired, sorry hehe.

raven just hook a bump2d to the bump map shader section of the fast skin shader. then connect your file to the bump2d utility....any ways help that helps. as for the waxy look, i have found that the specularity doesnt look that great with the fast skin shader, but using the recfection map seems to give a good effect...anyways just though i would try and help. its looking good keep it up

Another update before the morning snooze. Changed the hand position a bit. Still needs to be tweaked a little, at the base of the thumb.
Added some purple to the under-eyes, which will be moved down a bit.
Collar and bells added. The materials on both are just temporary colour references. Probably going to make the bells instead of just spheres.

well... i doubt i'll have time to texture this or even do the hair before the friday deadline... but here's my progress thus far. I spent much of the day yesterday working on this. I included 2 pics... the second one is w/ the cornea/outer shell of the eyeballs hidden so you can see the modeling i did on the iris/pupil/lens areas.

raven - i'm really liking the direction you're going... my only crit is that the reflection/spec on your face seems a bit strong giving your face a slightly slick/oily/wet look... if you can tone it down a bit or diffuse it more i think it would have more of the soft effect of skin. looking good though... keep it up.

Everyone's work is looking really good. Very impressive.
So, I have spent all of today thus far working on my head (being not-so-gainfully unemployed has it's perks). It has been frustrating and slow. There are still a number of problems:
1. It doesn't look like me, especially the cheeks.
2. See number 1.
3. I'm embarrassed to say, never done UV mapping before. I'm going to have to figure out the workflow in a hurry.
4. I have no idea how to do hair. I tried in maya a long time ago, and found it exceedingly frustrating. Poor visual preview, weird artifacts, and my rendertimes were about 24h/frame. Granted, I had no idea what I was doing... I've been working in MODO so far, but doesn't support hair/fur yet except through hacked displacement mapping.
5. Oh, and I really wish I had about 4GB ram and one of these shiny new multicore processors, cuz rendering is SLOW.
And yes, I shamelessly pasted a photo of my eyes into my render:

tobey try polygon textured planes for hair (with a color & opacity map). It requires no special hair plugins an the results are usually without atficts if mapped well and they render out fast.
Hard to give tips on uv mapping other than relax /unfold the mesh before further tweaking uvs ....and hide the seams at the back of the head (should use some form of cylindrical mapping for it). Haven't used modo yet but I'm sure it should have it somewhere in its tools.
DaddyMack
06-28-2006, 09:23 PM
Hey Tobey... Looking great mate;) I think you just need a 'point' around your cheekbone area... hard to explain but if you feel about and have a close look at your face in that area you'll get a sense of what simple changes you could do to 'exaggerate' that area slightly with your mesh... Which BTW I think is a great rep of yourself:thumbsup:
As for UV mapping... a simple little trick I use to flesh one out for a face is to create a duplicate of the mesh, and relax (max) or smooth (maya) it out so it kinda looks like a gimp mask (no overlapping details like ears or nostrils) then apply that as a morph target to the original... Morph the original into it and then use a 360' cylindrical projection with the seam at the back of it... Morph it back to it's original state and kill the history... voila! a clean and reasonably efficient uv map to tweek and/or paint away on;)... May sound complicated when you first read it but guaranteed if you follow those steps, you'll 'get' what happens... The reason we map the gimp mask is because it has no overlapping verts... by doing so we avoid a lot of pulling verts in uv editor and can kinda get on with some painting... good luck;)
Gregz... hard'e har har...

Thanks Raven and Daddymack for the tips.
Raven: Good Idea, I noticed that you used the poly hair method, and It looks suprisingly good.
Daddymack: you are right that my meshflow is the reason that my cheeks are off. As for what you said, I kinda follow you, but Modo has autoUV tools, which I just need to figure out.
Anyway, I managed to accidently get a UV map working. The tools in Modo seem really weird, stuff changes all of a sudden for no reason and such. I don't think Modo is as refined or reliable as luxology likes to brag, but maybe I'm just clumbsy. I've decided that I'm going to either tattoo or kabuki my face for my "makeup", so I mapped an escher etching to get a somewhat similar look.

Thanks Fellows, more less, As you see I am a bit fatter in real life, I shoted the video until I had the model done, I was using a small mirror during the process, so many details are still to be fixed, also i didnt want to use photograps as textures, maybe i will also make my pretty body when i have the time, thanks for nice words :)
tobeythorn
07-07-2006, 11:29 PM
climax: it really is very good, but you are right about some of the details. If it helps, here is what I see needs adjusting,
1. The neck flows into the jaw too sharply, it needs to be smoother and filled out slightly. Also, your neck looks like it should be pretty wide where it meets the jaw.
2. The ears on your model slant inward into the jaw, whereas they should look just about vertical from the front view looking at the photo. Also, they seem too thin/sharp in some areas and your real ears are a bit more complicated than what you have now. Add some details!
3. The wings of your nose need to be rounder, fuller, and smoother. They are too angular.
4. Your model is kinda lacking temples. Move than geometry inward a bit.

It's summer again, and I'll actually have a little free time. Anybody want to do another unofficial challenge? Cuz I know I want to... Ideas? Post here or IM me
