Wahoo I'm back doing CG
Hi all, long time no post-a-project
Last night...morning I couldn't sleep (before a test next morning hehe)
so I decided to model me a basic house, for those of you not in the UK this type of house is pretty common on 'estates' in london - very cheap and not very big.
In truth its a slight continuation of another project because some of you may remember this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/ghlpics/flats.jpg), it was too big of a project to handle so I gave up, plus noone seemed interested with one or two posts.

Anyways onto the progress;
About half an hour last night modelling and about 10 mins planar mapping some basic textures to it for an idea of how it will look:

[IMAGE REMOVED: updates further on, textures removed for reworking]

The render is in monochrome because I havn't had time to make my textures match, they vary in hue.
Anything thats plane is... not started:D
I will dirty up the textures later.

QUESTION
What do you all reccomend for this project:
Planar map etc the textures on half-life2 style... or unwrap it?
its a hard decision but i need to make it soon.

oh and there will be loads of props and piping and stuff added in later on.

I really hope I can finish this one...

As you said already, there is a lack of detail. since you have just begun thats only a matter of time ..

I'd suggest making a unique texture-layout. The house is just too small to use tileable textures. Everthing should fit on one single texturesheet ..

Could you make the windows round, I'm a big fan of Smash Bros. :scream: for some reason they remind me of that game... ??

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing from people: what is considered more common in games, environments with standalone planar maps or settings/pieces being layed out as one large sheet?

not really a worthy update but i spent a little while doing the front garden,
i first off did a lawn with grass but it looked too good for this working class house, so its been covered over with paving - im gonna have weeds poking through the gaps.

looks good so far - do you use any photoreferences or did you model everything by your mind? Want to see how it looks in the end...

half photoreffed and half by mind

looks great! ... hmm... that felt constructive enough...
Oh, yeah! I thought of something to ask!

What kind of game or "game" is this going to be used for? 3rd person, or first, or strategy like? I was just thinking that it's probably not very useful to have roof-details if they'll not be seen. Just a thought :)

Oh, and also, just an open question:
If you model for 3rd-person, in the style of Silent Hill or such, with relatively fixed camera angles; is it a good idea to delete faces on the bottom of objects, like, say, the fences in your scene?
Just wondering 'cause I've been doing some props for myself recently and I wondered what's best.

Sorry 'bout that... back to the thread... It still looks great. And inspirational. It inspired me to model and texture a small storehouse thingamajig outside my window :D

yeah as long as they cant be moved delete the bottom faces, for example the shed in the back garden has no bottom aswell as the paving stones.
this isnt actually going into a game its going in my portfolio so i am modelling everything and wont say what its for so the employer can assume and also it just wouldnt look nice from those angles if i didnt have the details.
