I'd like to make his back (top of his shell) Rocky.... I'm thinking a few different things...

1. realy make that back Geometry Super Nasty Thick...and make a Dissplacement map in photoshop ...use that to make a rocky look......also thought it might make texturing it easier...

2. Use some type os Scatter Plugin/Script to randomly toss some geometry (like if I made some different Rock shapes) out across the shell faces... but, I'm not sure if a Particle system would be good for this...or if theres a good Script that gives some good tewaking options to scattering something..

3. maybe use a Combo of the two...

But I'm open to any and all ideas......the Photoshop image I loaded up is a tad more grassy etc than I will prolly make him.....bur again... I got great Ideas...just a matter of figuring out how to do them... I'm sorta learning maya as I go..

hi

i suggest you to use both displacement and instancing.

with displacement you can't create true geometries, trees or other thing. just model things normally and use displacement on them if you have to.

the particle instancer has great controls and you can use mel scripts to variing rocks, trees, etc. however i have to learn these scripting techniques too. :)

There's a script at highend that lets you paint rocks and stuff over a surface with artisan script paint

geometrypaint.mel has come with maya since version 1.0. No idea why a/w never created an interface for it. Also on a/w's site is a script called ecopy.mel. It takes and object and randomly places copies around the scene depending on what info you give it (it can randomly scale also).
