June 18th, 2006 - CG Toolkit© has announced the release of the third book in its critically acclaimed rigging training series. The Art of Rigging Volume III explores advanced character rigging effects like fur, cloth, hair and facial motion capture.

Whereas The Art of Rigging Volumes I and II concentrated on rigging for animation, the third volume was designed to explore some of Maya's more advanced modules. The majority of the book concentrates on the processes used to add advanced fur/hair and cloth effects to an animated character. All of the concepts are presented in the context of a real world example which provides a fresh and fun learning experience. Readers are guided through interesting examples as they learn how to harness Maya's powerful toolset.

In addition to learning about Maya's advanced character effects, The Art of Rigging Volume III includes a chapter dedicated to facial motion capture. Using motion capture data recorded specifically for demonstration purposes, readers learn how to apply the data to a chimpanzee character. As an added bonus, the included DVD-ROM contains many hours of video lectures, every referenced scene file and several custom MEL scripts.

The Art of Rigging Volumes I and II have become staple resources for both students and professionals alike. This sequel both compliments and extends the series while providing the final piece of the character rigging puzzle. The Art of Rigging Volume III is available now at www.cgtoolkit.com (http://www.cgtoolkit.com/) and retails for $59.00.

Ordered mine soon as I got the email. Should be cool.

/minor picky thing: it should read "the sequel both COMPLEMENTS," not compliments... unless the sequel is a shameless ass-kisser

Cool, thanks for letting us know.

Wish there was some kind of discount for buying a set. I don't have any books yet. :(

Interesting... I might put in an order. Does anyone know how they get shipped to the UK? As in do they get listed as educational material? This tends to keep the import tax people at bay. I'd hate to get stung by a massive customs fee

I'm afraid that there is no discount on multiple titles - I emailed the sales department about that a few hours ago, and I was suprised to hear that there wasn't a savings. I wonder if all three will be availalbe at one of the SIGGRAPH bookstores in Boston. I think they offer discounts for 2 or more books during the conference.

The main topics are cloth, hair, fur and facial mocap. Sounds very interesting. I just wonder what the robot on the cover has to do with these topics? Anyway I think I`ll order this one, because I recently had a chance to dig through the first book and these guys seem to know their stuff. Good luck to the cgtoolkit-team:thumbsup:

anyone have a picture of it ?

That robot model actually comes vol. 2, which deals a lot with its rigging (wires, gun pivots, proxy geometry, etc). It's a pretty hefty bugger, too -- I believe the maya file for its geometry alone is something like 100 megs. I could be off on that.

I'm just glad someone's doing training on more advanced topics. Only so many beginners' tutorials one can do without it getting a bit old.

I ordered the first book last year, delivered to the uk, can't remember what it was labelled as, but I didn't have to pay anything extra.

Tried placing an order for the 3-book combo, but the checkout failed

When I found a link for North American orders they had volume 3 and a combo order for 1 & 2, but no combo order for all three books. Anyone know if this will get fixed or how to order the 3-book combo from the US without errors?

I only own and use Maya 7 Complete. I really liked the other two books but I wonder if anything in this book would be of any use to me working only with Complete. It seems as though everything mentioned is only found in the Unlimited version.

Hi All,

I was an author on this book and can answer any questions you might have about the content or whatever. As most of you already know, this volume concentrates on hair, fur and cloth effects which (IMO) are some of the most fun aspects of character rigging :)

It was a bunch of fun to write and I hope everyone who orders a copy gets some good insight into the techniques used to make this stuff work.

Thanks again to all who are interested in our book!

Hey Kiaran,
I already placed my order. Not that it's important, but I am curious to know what type of characters do you use to incorporate hair, fur, and cloth effects that you mention?

Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting this sure to be good addition to the series! :D

Can those who are quite new to rigging also take advantage of Vol. 1+2?

I can't order from their website  Apparently my credit card won't accept orders from them unless they phone it in, but they don't have a phone number listed on their website for me to contact them...

Can those who are quite new to rigging also take advantage of Vol. 1+2?

new to rigging then book one will get you started. It starts off very basic and gets harder. Book 2 is easy and claer to understand.

If you are new to maya (meaning you don't have a clue how to use the program) then these aren't for you. But if you know what bones are, where to find them then these books are easy to follow.

I rate book 1 and 2 : 5 stars

Received my copy a couple days ago. :bounce:

I haven't had the time to get deep into it, but after skimming through the pages, I must say that I am truly impressed. It looks like the CGToolkit team has done it again. I can't wait to get into this.

If you're interested in learning all about complex character creation, you have to add this to your learning collection. Highly recommended!
