View Full Version : selection tool question
Blair888 06-19-2006, 04:10 AM Hey all,
My selection tool seems to have defaulted or become set on a preference I've not seen before.
After I select an area, the selection tool automatically becomes negative select (without pressing alt), and also when selecting an area with shift pressed, it doesnt select a perfect square as it did previously - why??
I posted this question in 3d cafe 5 days ago, and havent had a response, hope to get some advice here - Cheers

check the usuals like ur caps lock, insert, num lock, etc - any of the lock keys (these sometimes have an effect on shortcuts in various programs)
other than that - no idea, which is why i spose noone has replied lol
Try reinstalling PS, have a good look thru preferences - doubt there is anything there tho.
With all apps out there, there are always bugs, some bugs happen once, to one person only, some happen to everyone. Its just how it is, Reinstall is usually a good thing to try.
hope i helped.

you may have a preset selected for your selection tool which constrains your selection marquee to a certain shape.
check by clicking on the marquee icon at t op left of your screen, only thing i can think it could be

If you are using CS2, it sounds like you have the 'subtract from selection' button selected in your marquee options.
If you are not sure where this is, select your marquee tool and look at the top left of your screen. There are 4 square buttons there in a row. If you have the 3rd one selected, try selecting the first one.

Oh also...with the shift not working to constrain to a square shape, hold shift after dragging the marquee tool. IE. Click-Drag first then hold shift.
Don't hold shift first and then click-drag as photoshop will think you are trying to add to the selection.
