Hello. :) I have a demo reel to show. I hope you like it, and critique is very welcome. :) I am working on some dialog animations to beef this up with, but for now, this is what I have. I am also looking for work, preferably in California and more than willing to relocate.

Animation Reel 3.7 megs (http://www.3dluvr.com/clisk3d/reel/PeterStarostinReel_h264.mov)
It requires QuickTime 7 to view since it uses h264 codec.

I also have a mirror, since my server has been slightly unstable lately
Animation Reel 3.7 megs mirror (http://www.3dluvr.com/clisk3d/reel/PeterStarostinReel_h264.mov)

If you only have quicktime 6, then try this one.
Animation Reel QT6 format 7.9 megs (http://www.3dluvr.com/clisk3d/reel/PeterStarostinReel_s3.mov)

Thanks allot for viewing. :)

[edit] I also wanted to mention that, even though I modeled, rigged, posed and rendered the Purple Alien character on my title. He was designed by Mike Kunkel from www.theastonishfactory.com . I love Mike's designs. :D

Awesome stuff

I think you can afford to take out the ball character (playblast side view one) and biped walks...you already have that char waving at the start and a very nice walk that shows alot of personality. Although the biped walk was very nicely done...it was uninteresting and i don't see the point in having it in there cos you obviously CAN animate your walks well. My other suggestion would be to remove the opening title cos you already have it at the end. Just go straight into the awesome animation you got :)

cheers

some of the best animation I've seen on a reel in my opinion. I agree that the ortho shot of the ball walk could go, but i like the rest. My fave is the white puffy guy that jumps outa the way of the ball. I love the slight shake of the head before he jumps.

Question for ya, how much animation experience did you have before you started AM?

mistasam02
06-19-2006, 07:27 AM
i'd like to know that too ^ :D

awesome work man! all the pre-pro and effort put into it paid off big time! definitely one of the better reels i've seen as well! keep it up!

Hey guys. Thanks for commenting. :) Yeah, I was contemplating taking out the ball with two legs walk. At the same time I wanted to show that I can do different type of walks.

Oh also that blue character dodging a ball, it's Bone character from a comic book by Jeff Smith. You can get more info at www.boneville.com

[QUOTE=Question for ya, how much animation experience did you have before you started AM?[/QUOTE]

I animated for about two years. That Bone character jumping and dodging a ball, I actually animated right before I started AM. That was after I've read The Animators Survival Kit, which helped me allot. Still, before AM I didn't pay enough attention to arcs, had no clue what spacing was and struggled allot with posing among other things.

Ya know... that was a great reel! It makes me realize how much work I should be doing on my animation!

And that is the best 3D Bone I've ever seen! You really captured his personality to a T! Those were some great floating eyebrows!

Great work!

Nice reel you got there! I realy enjoyed the first piece that you posted some time ago. Great timing there. I think you could lose the biped walkcycle and the sideview walkcycle. They don't add anything to your reel. Better put your best stuff only, even if the reel gets shorter.

yep, this is wonderful demoreel and realy deserve to be in banner. keep it up pal, your animations are wonderfull... i really liked am_push_13 anim. it's very funny and very cool. other anims are good as well. i watched ur walkcycle frame by frame, and it was very useful to me. (generally i watch walkcycles :) )

Hey Richie. Yeah, working on some dialogs. Not much time lately so progress is kind of slow. :(
About the rig, I was honored to do the modeling for the new Academy of Art rig from sketches Leif Jeffers gave me. I used my own rig for theese animations, though. It's a 3dsmax rig and up for grabs if anyone wants it. http://www.3dluvr.com/clisk3d/freerigg/Max_v03.rar It's not quite finished and only works for shots with one character, since some facial stuff breaks if you try to merge a second copy in. But still quite functional.

Of course, ball with two legs and the second animation on my reel was done using riggs provided by Animation Mentor.

Woot congratulations on the plug Peter! Great reel although I'd have to say that the guy in the kitchen isn't really as good as for example the first piece (which is BRILLIANT). Personally I like the ball since it's just a sphere with two legs but it has a lot of character, which can be quite tricky. I remember the Phone Bone animation from back on Maxforums, great to see your progress from back then :)

Wish I could show what I've been working on so you could see that I've developed too :D Best of luck with your job hunting, and with that future animation supervisor at Pixar job ;)

Hey Peter, I absolutely love the Bone character animation! Awesome! Congrats on the front page plug and your reel is looking great. Only suggestion I have might be to take out the walk cycle at the end with the character that's only basic shapes. It's still pretty good but the other class 2 walk you have is solid. As always, its a pleasure to see your work!

Seriously, your reel is awesome, one of the best animation reel I've ever seen.I think a reel isn't complete without a dialogue shot,so I would definitely put a dialogue in it.Congratulations and good luck with the job hunting :)

I don't know if i'm really qualified to comment on this, but its really good

Maaaaybe get a better render of the washing up/cake scene, as i found it alittle distracting compared with the rest, but it did say wip so i'm probably abit noobish saying that.

I would to see the dialogue when its done, espeically if it involves two or more characters in one scene :D

Great stuff, and good luck with finding a jog :applause:

I think your last shot is your best shot, it should be the first... great acting (although I'm not sure what the "whatever" head movement at the end has to do with the anything, the rest of the shot is extraordinary).

Looks great Peter. I think we have another successful graduate from Animation Mentor. Of course I have never been there but have seen some of the work coming out of there and I must say it is fantastic.

Critiques: I like the stuff after the Biped walk better and I think you should keep the biped but put it at the back. The ending stuff is far more interesting and fun and great.

Great work,

Thanks allot for kinds words and critique guys. :-)

Ismini - Oh I miss AM too. I just hardly have time to even work on my reel. I hope I can come back in the fall, though. :-)

Jeremy Hopkins - Thanks so much for comments. It means allot, coming from you. You're work has always been very inspirational to me.

Richie - Hey no problem about going off topic. :-) If anyone has time, can and willing to port the rig to Maya, feel free to do so. :-)

Carl - thanks allot.

Goran - Yeah, I totally agree. I really want to finish a dialog or two that I have started. Hopefully soon but lately just had no time. :(

Scott Sava - oh WOW, thanks allot for kind words, Scott. :bounce: Uh, the fun 3-4 years it was. :-)

Disrupt - Thanks allot. Yeah, someday I'll finish PPPppretty obvious. :-)

Benj - Thanks for commenting. Yeah, that dishwasher is just a playblast/Preview, not rendered yet. I guess I should do a quick one.

CHristina - Thanks allot. :-)

Paolo - LOL, I love your running Chicken. :-) Yeah, that Monster, actually an Alien, was designed by very awesome Mike Kunkel from www.theastonishfactory.com (http://www.theastonishfactory.com) I just turned his design in to 3D. You can see the design here http://www.theastonishfactory.com/images/edcharacterpage.jpg

Mykal - Hey, thanks for commenting. You've got some awesome AM stuff on your site. Pretty inspirational. :-)

Ran - Hey Ran. Thanks allot for dropping by. :-) Always awesome to hear from you. :-)

J. Charette - thanks allot. :-)

Jocelyn - Thanks allot. :-) I love your current AM wip, btw. Have been watching it's progress on strutyourreel.

Virgil - Thanks for your critique. I still like the one with boxes and teapot better than the last one. Just more polished, I think and more fun. I did want to close on a decent piece as well, though.

Iyo - thanks. :-) I like Bone allot. And I did a walk cycle of that Alien character, it's on my site. But back then I was still struggling with walks and now that I look at it, it doesn't look good to me anymore.

Christian - Thanks allot :-)

Serkan - thanks for commenting :-) Any job openings at Sony Online Entertainment? :-)

Sean MacNeil - hey Sean. Thanks for posting. :-) How's AM? God I miss it. :(

Hey CG GUy, I haven't graduated from AM yet. Just first three classes.

You really shouldn't express that you have a WIP in your demo reel. No company wants to see something in the works. They want to see the rendered finished product. The animation is incredible and I know that you will be a wonderful addition to the animation world.

HI Great stuff!!

To be honest I would keep all shoots on this reel.
The WIP show good/potentially great acting, the sphere character is doing a very nice double bounce walk, why trash that??
The "ordinary" walk cycle is fluid and solid.

Keep'em all :-)

Nathan - Hey Nathan. I really didn't mean anything against University of Arts. I've heard some really good things about it, actually. AM seemed pretty personal to me, as well. Every student has personal e-critiques, and really gets to know his/her mentor through live Q&A's and forum chats. I just really like that AM is not software or medium specific at all and teaches the art of animation.

El Drego - Eh? Whatcha talking about? :D

Indra the dreamer, Loocas and Jason-Lavoie - thanks allot. :-)

Dwarakanath - Hey, great to hear from you. Yeah, I did't have any time to finish that dishwasher animation. :( i still have a dialog piece that needs finishing as well. Yeah, hope to be strolling through AM in the fall. :D

WOW i love that reel. I have a year left in school, and I'm approaching the point in which I need to compile all my works. You reel is a testament to the fact that a very simple reel with quality movement is better than trying to cram every single project in.

Of course, now all I need is character footage thats as good as yours. I am very jealous. good work

Awesome reel Peter!!!
I love the Weight and gear change exercises! I agree with the comments about the walk cycles...don't need them all. I'm not sure if this has been said yet, but I'd be carefly about having a W.I.P. on your reel...if you do keep it I wouldn't put it in the middle. Hey Bro great Reel! reall like it my fav clip on there I would have to say is the guy holding up the heavy boxes. really cool. One thing i noticed maybe its just me but chef in the cake clip just slid in and was still throughout the whole animation. It would be better to animate in even if its suttle even if its breathing with his eyes moving. esp at the end after he puts the chewed up cherry back on the cake. Also him stepping into frame instead of sliding in. Well thats all i got. Good luck on the dialogue clips cant wait to see them i think they will be great. peace

:bounce: I wanna be like you :bounce:

One of the best reels ive ever seen. Do you mind more or less explaining briefly whats the process you go through to achieve your animations and if possible how much time do you take on them?

Im not asking you to write something very broad, just a brief outline. Its just that im very curious about how great animators work differently from each other, and try to learn from it if possible. Sorry if im askin too much and if you dont wanna answer il understand.

Thanks for such inspiring work

Bill Cabey - thanks allot. :D

Rafael - Lol, animation IS concentration. :D Survival kit is an awesome book. :D

Hey Andrea. thanks. :-D Hopefully, I'll see your inspirational workspace in the fall. :D

Adam - Thanks allot. :) Yeah, I think when making a character animation reel, the models themselves don't have to be complicated or detailed at all. Good luck with your studies. :-)

Tim - Thanks a ton for commenting. I really love your animations and respect your opinion. Thanks allot for your input. :D

Ruel - Thanks. :) Yeah, the chef is just there for timing right now. When I get some time to finish this off, I will actually animate him, of course. :-)

Ravi - Thanks allot. :D I actually have a progression quicktime of the first animation in my reel.
Progression (http://www.3dluvr.com/clisk3d/reel/hpush_progression_01.mov)

I still tweaked some things so the latest version is either on my site or my demo reel. Also before I started doing what you see in the progression, I also sketched about 3 or 4 pages worth of quick doodles to explore the idea.
I hope this answers your question and if you'd like to know more, let me know. :)

nice work. If you are looking for work in the game industry, it wouldn't be a bad idea to leave the ball walk and the biped walks in. If you aren't then you can probably take them out. I would leave the double bounce ball walk because it is different, though.

This is an amazing reel :0!!! I can only hope to be this good one day after alot of practice. MY favorite animation the last one with the guy sitting on the couch. Especially how ticked off he looks at the end when his tv falls over XD.

Great stuff I hope you find work soon!

Just curious, how long does it usually take you to animate a 2-step walk cycle?

Hey, I'm sorry I didn't answer this question yet, I did remembered that you asked, though. :)
The time depends a bit on a walk, for me. If it's a vanilla one, then It would be faster. Probably about two hours. If the walk is unusual, then I have to plan a bit more and would take longer.

n00b question here certainly, but how did you encode your film down to that size with Quicktime?

i'm trying to get my reel small enough to host it on my site (20mb space limit) and the smallest i've managed is 50ish megs.

could you direct me to how you encoded them that small?

Thanks (i couldn't find anything with this information on the forums)

harmonic01
06-22-2006, 01:26 AM
Hey Wesley. No problem.

I first exported as a Quicktime using PNG codec and uncompressed audio. (big file)

Then I used Quicktime pro to export it using H264 codec set on medium, I think. And AAC audio, Mono 32.000 Khz.

The other one used sorenson 3 compression on low. But that was the bigger, qt6 compatible file.

In general, I noticed Quicktime Pro compresses allot better than doing that out of After Effects or Premier using both, h264 and Sorenson 3.

Also, I could probably get away with lower compression here because the models I used are pretty simple. It might be more punishing if I had detailed modeling reel.

Good luck, I hope this helps. :)

That's some nice stuff you got there Peter. I love that opening bit with the teapot. Not to be too picky but I would remove the playblast of the ball/legs character. The following (rendered) shot looks better and it's kinda redundant.. Also... I think your vanilla walk with the biped is a little simplistic for your reel... Don't get me wrong, it's animated very nicely, but I think the rest of your work shows you can handle a walk cycle. And lastly.. I would really like to see some dialogue/acting stuff! Good luck in the future!!! (as if you need it)

Hey Peter,

Very good reel, very good flowing animations, well done. About your version of LowMax's rigg,I've got and I noticed that there are only FK controls for the spine, Here with my studies some times I've used with SplineIK though now testing at the LowMax with FK, seems to be better to control it. Have you got any advice from the animators in AM about which one is better to animate? which one has been used for them?

C-ya and take care,

Ben - Woohooo, thanks for the kind words. Means a huge deal coming from you. :D

Thiago - I think mostly people used the FK spine. In the end, it really doesn't matter which one you use, as long as the end result looks good. There is a time when spline IK is better for a particular shot, though. I used Spline Ik on the very first animation on my reel, because it was much easier to do the hip thrust that way. Other then that, I usually stick to FK spine, just because I feel a bit more comfortable with it. :)

Dario - Thanks :-)

Paolo - Man, I love your Avatar. :D Yeah, Mike Kunkel designs are awesome. :)

This is really awesome work, congrats. Really inspiring stuff. The acting is superb, you've applied just the right amount of restraint to keep your work snappy without over-acting. The simple scenes emphasize the performance, too, which is I think key in an animation reel, and something I in fact need to learn myself.

I used to live on 22nd and Mt Vernon in Philly. I grew up in the burbs, in West Chester. But anyway yeah... I used to be welded to a stool at The Bishop's Collar.

Good luck to you!

Hey Cynthia, I used 3dsmax and it has Shadow/Matte material for the ground. Pretty much all packages have some sort of material that only shows shadows.

Hi Peter,

I tried to ask you something about your version of Lowman rig on your other thread, so I've taken your rig to make some execise and I was trying to understand about the hands control, two buttons to replace the arm's position from IK position to FK position and virce versa, was it made by you? can you tell how you did it?

Thanks man, Cheers

harmonic01

Thiago,

I used a script to setup those buttons. I got it somewhere here on cgtalk, although can't remember the author. It works with a 3 chain setup, (IK chain, FK chain, and a chain that blends between the two). So basically it matches positions and orientations of FK to FK and vice versa. and to set up the buttons, you just select an object and modifier on which you want the buttons to appear, and run the script. Of course, you'll need to edit the script to reflect the object names in your scene.

catTest = attributes CAT_Test -- define your attribute names
(
rollout ikandfksnaps "IKFKSnaps" -- create a rollout
(
button fkiksnap "FKtoIK" pos:[38,23] width:78 height:43
button ikfksnap "IKtoFK" pos:[39,94] width:75 height:47

on fkiksnap pressed do
(
$M_R_FK_U_Arm.rotation = $M_R_IK_U_Arm_point.rotation
$M_R_FK_U_Arm.pos = $M_R_IK_U_Arm_point.pos
$M_R_FK_L_Arm.rotation = $M_R_IK_L_Arm_point.rotation
$M_R_FK_L_Armw.pos = $M_R_IK_L_Arm_point.pos
$M_R_FK_hand.rotation = $M_R_IK_hand_point.rotation
$M_R_FK_hand.pos = $M_R_IK_hand_point.pos
)
on ikfksnap pressed do
(
$M_R_IK_Hand_Parent.rotation = $M_R_FK_hand.rotation
$M_R_IK_Hand_Parent.pos = $M_R_FK_hand.pos
$M_R_IK_Swivle.rotation = $M_R_FK_Swivle.rotation
$M_R_IK_Swivle.pos = $M_R_FK_Swivle.pos
)

)
)

-- add the attributes to the selected object's current modifier
custAttributes.add (modPanel.getCurrentObject()) catTest

those are some really inspirational stuff! :) From your timing to your spacing. Especially the acting choices youve made in the dishwasher and the tv animation. And congratulations on getting into blur. Can you tell me what they look for in an animator? like maybe they want multi skilled artists(rigging, modeling)? Also, do they prefer acting to physical animations?

And thanks for uploading your reel and sharing it with us. It's amazing the people that come out of AM. The emphasizes on planning and thumbnailing is really impressive.

Hey Myung,

Thanks for kind words. :)
I think it's nice to be a multi skilled artist, but definitely not required at a company where people specialise. I think in an animator Blur looks for good acting skills with solid foundation in the animation principles. I think it's always good to have acting pieces and then top it off with one or two action / physical animation. I really wish I had some dialog pieces in my reel, actually.

Thanks again and best wishes to you too. :)

hey harmonic

Dialogues are great but you can also show your acting skills through pantomines too.
oh, and when you are working on spacing, how do you justify big pops you leave in?
The reason Im asking is because I usually always avoid these and now I feel like thats what makes so much of ur stuff stand out. Do you just make sure you slow in after the big jump? I was taught to avoid these pops and i hope i experimented this earlier, :p

Hey Myung,

Heh, I actually try not to have any pops either. :) I guess I let some slip. I'm not too affraid to get in to big spacing quickly, though, as long as I justify it with a long enough ease in or the change in spacing is still relatively gradual. Heh, I"m not sure which once you were referring to, so maybe it just me not catching them all. Anyways, glad you updated your signature. :) I saw your reel and it is very humbling and inspirational.
