View Full Version : Old Man's Head looking for a body.
TheJinj 06-18-2006, 08:46 PM Well I guess the title says it all...here is my first post here, after at last achieving the minimal confidence in my work to not chug it straight into the recycle bin. Done mainly in XSI with surface detail in ZBrush. Any comments and critiques will be very welcome, as well as suggestions to the body. I was thinking some kind of worn-out cyborg thingy, something in stark opposite to the gentleness of his face...?
Update: More work on left arm. Going to add an ammo crate on the upper arm and a gun/gun/gun/grenade launcher/chainsaw on forearm. Right arm will be humanoid, I think.
Crits welcomed!!! As well as various ideas... Thanks!http://www.filelodge.com/files/room31/853335/Comp1.1.jpg

hey adam. I feel like answering most of what questions that you left at the monkey king's post here. switching from xsi to maya is terrible, yet necessary. xsi has a much better workflow for modeling. Maya, on the other hand has a lot of functions that need to click here or there, input this and that, which xsi only needs to use your mouse button with 1 or 2 clicks. If you like to know more, i can show you more. just drop by at ea's front desk and ask for my name you can get in and have a chat or individual tour, or even play game with me.
now back to your post. I have to say that you really get some stuff to teach :P. I barely know any zbrush. The only two things that i've notices are the back of the head and the front of the neck. the connecting level of the back of the head and the neck is too high; for the front of the neck, i know you want to make some soft skin that most of the old ppl have. yet right now your neck feels much more solid and ...full, if you know what i'm talking about. the rest of the area is good or ok. upper eye lid need a bit more work, specially if you've already zbrushed it, you should get more realistic feeling.
it's a great start. I wasn't at your level when I was in my 2nd semester. keep up the good work and you will indeed rewrite inter-dec's semi legend or even grab a sit right beside me at EA.

Thank you Jack. Your comments are spot-on.
What happened was that I read your post, figured you were wrong and my head was perfect, then realised I was drunk. Sobered up, looked again at your post, figured out you were absolutely right and sat down to fix the head, especially the back head/neck connection (how did I miss that? Anatomy 101). ZBrush crashed. ZBrush never crashes! Maybe the beer fumes infected the pc too... hours of my youth wasted. So I'll re-fix and post tonight again.
Thanks for your offer...I would absolutely love to visit the EA offices and see if they really are the dungeons everyone says they are with artists hanging from their ankles. However, do they really let you bring people in? Isn't everything like top secret?
And play computer games with me? On office time? Either everyone sees EA wrong or you are trying to get fired :) .
Later, Adam.

sometimes if you are too concentrate on your current work, you might get a big chance of missing some obvious spots, it happens to all of us, don't worry about it. One can not see the entire forest if the one is in it. beside, your base is solid, not far from getting the good result.

Well, in my mind at least....here is a thumbnail quality sketch of where I was thinking of taking this...the red thingy inside the ribs will be a heart with pipes all around.... the left arm's joint was obviously inspired by the cool Vinci units in Rise of Legends (a game with the best design I've seen in quite a while). Let's hope I can pull this off :)
Jack: Updated the head...worked on the wrinkles around the mouth and everything else you've pointed out....critiques more than welcome. And now I am off to see your monkey king and reply in kind. I really hope to work on this guy because next week the lip sync project is due and all I've been doing lately is modelling phonemes on Natalie Portman. Choosing a realistic head for that project was the worst mistake I've made in recent times. Talk about Zombie Zone (or Uncanny zone) all over the place :(((

Okay, small update here. More or less finished work on face and started work on body. The ear has a pinch on the top from improperly unwraped UVs which cause the normal map to go berserk, but that is fixable easily. The connection of the head with the body will be covered in wirings and various drills and bits, so I'm not concerned about that. Other than that, any comments or ideas where to take the body to are welcomed!
Adam.
PS: Also discovered how to put images in the body of the message instead of an attachment! A great day!! (I'm so ashamed it took me this long)

curious about your plan of connecting the organic head with the mechanic body

well, I plan to deviously hide the seam between the organic and the mechanical with tubes and pipes...as well as maybe some needles sticking in the flesh if I have the time and feel nasty.
There will be no seam visible at the end. Any ideas for the shoulder armor piece? That is what is bothering me the most now...I'll post another small update later today.
