Hi. We've all seen the amazing work Pixar and Dreamworks have done with the materials in their respective fish movies. I found here on cgtalk a while a go a PDF that the Stuart Little guys got together, discussing wings, and I was wondering if there was something similar concerning reproducing the look of fish scales. I want to achieve a really nice effect; I would like the light in the scene to set off/ show the scales, like in the real world. I can get my head around only the colour map part of this process (like the colour of the scales). It's for a short movie so I would like something that really looks wow. If there are tutorials out there too that you know of I'd love to know.

Thanks in advance.

What you're after is an iridescent shader, where the colour would alternate slightly according to facing ratio (with the lights). I'd imagine it would work well together with some kind of gradient setup with the colour variations. You didn't mention what software you're using, so I can't recommend any specific shaders.
