View Full Version : Rhino - bugs in my Zoo
TheFirstAngel 06-18-2006, 01:11 PM I sent this to the support, but this has been a problem i deal with since a while. if anyone had this too or has an idea how to solve it pls let me know.
If i start Rhino in the standardmode, it reboots my system. instantly. Today, it didn't even run in the save/protected mode anymore. i reinstalled it but nothing has changed. as soon as i start rhino3.0 in any mode my pc reboots
my actual sysconfig:
dual p3 1ghz
512 mb ram
nvidia gfx5600 256mb latest fware
win xp pro sp3

That's a strange error, i never seen that one before. But from the sound of it i'd guess it's more of a XP installation problem or possibly (but not very likely) hardware problem than a software problem. Have you got problems with any other programs or with your XP ? is it still behaving the same even after a total format of and reinstallation of your system ?
I could guess forever until i turn all blue like a Smurf, it's still probably not gonna help you solve this. If possible, format and reinstall your system again if you haven't tried that and then try again, that should work.

Thanks Magnus. I tried it on a different pc now to find out if its the cd. I take it there is a windows conflict or so, and since I lost the whole afternoon with this problem i will look at it tomorrow on the other pc where it works ^^ cant't say where the problem comes from but i take it its my windows :p

You're welcome Sacha, well the way it looks now is that your currently installed XP is causing the problem. I can't see what else would do it as Rhino 3 is unlikely to be the reason for such hickups although it can ofcourse happen..
Keep us posted about how you solved this problem when you done it, hopefully tomorrow.
Good luck! :)

Sorry Sacha,
I can't really help you with that one. It sounds like the strangest error.
keep me updated on msn when you log in tho.

yep that's what i thought tooo. rhinosupport sais it could be a conflict with open gl :/ i'll seee if the sugestion works to shutdown hardware acceleration, since ithis is unusual and .... never ever happened to me with any 3d application before, ever.
going to update my nvidia drivers now, thought i done that 1 month ago :p I'll see

Actually, you know what you do instead of updating your Nvidia drivers to the latest. Install the version previous to the one you currently have installed if that makes any sense. As i assume you didn't have these problems with the old driver but once you updated then these problems started so by going back in time to a older driver you might just get outta this problematic situation.
I hope..

thanks. i thought of that too. my further analyzis of the problem brought up the folowing result:
Windows regular start:
Rhino regular start = instant crash
Rhino Protected mode start = instant crash
windows protected mode:
Rhino regular start = starts normal
Rhino Protected mode start = starts normal
this is the strangest behaviour i ever had with any 3d app. I had problems with the former version of the whql driver of nvidia, updating it was solving it. to go back to the former version would cause me problems again with the rest of my windows applications, i remember my desktop looking like a funny mexican patchwork in dualscreen, and i don't intend to look at that again.
I tried turning off open gl in rhino in the protected mode Windows start. wich didn't make a difference. doubleclick, screens turn black and byebye.
There's a few things that don't start in that mode such as my wacom cintiq or the nvidia drivers. since i don't have an idea what causes the conflict, could in worst case work in windows protected mode but as obiwan once said "it can't be...."
erm...

Hi again Sacha
When reading your description again and again and yet again i keep getting even more and more puzzled by your weird problem and so far the only solution which i mentioned before i can see would solve you trouble is to reinstall XP Pro all over again, i know it's a shitload of work to do and no one likes to do it. How long ago is it since you last time installed a fresh copy of XP Pro ?! :)
Have you had any success in solving this mess ?

ok, this is where it solved, thought the solution is slightly unfunny.
Warpy (thanks mate) showed me how to force the blue screen ( the pathway over the blue screen can lead you to enlightments some would consider to be... unfunny) and the evil little bug that showed up was NV4mini.sys.
i downgraded my whole nvidia drivers to a version of 20.03.2003, and you wouldn't believe it, rhino runs, again, without any crashes.
still quoting obiwan. "it can't be..."
End credits:
thanks magnus vette and warpy for the great support, I am happy this has solved, even thought the solving was not funny at all and i spent 2 full days with bughunting.
^^
cheers:beer:

Well, I guess it's good that it's "working," but it's not right that you're having to use a really old driver. You must either have something really messed up in your Windows install--I hope when you're chaning video drivers you're totally removing them first?--or a hardware problem, I've never ever heard of this before.
