Damn, 5 SP levels? That's pretty sweet. Then again, they've certainly had a while to make the game. :p God, I remember reading about Prey back in high school, I think. Maybe even junior high. :argh:
Course, with my luck, it'll simply refuse to even boot up on my tpc with that stupid Intel GPU, just like most of the more recent batch of PC games. :wise:
edit: Speaking of that thread, I couldn't stop watching this gif:

My favorite thing about xbox 360 marketplace is that you can dl all the demos for free. I cant wait to check out the prey and chromehounds demo. Summer seems very good for 360 with prey , chromehounds and dead rising coming out in the next two months.

Wow, I just realized 3drealms still makes games...
To bad they dont understand now days if you want to release a generic FPS you actually have to build a brand spanking new engine around it.

Wow, I just realized 3drealms still makes games...
I don't believe 3DRealms is the actual developer of Prey, they're still dicking around with Duke Nukem Forever.
Human Head is the developer, 3d realms are more of the producers.

Reviews on 3drealms.com forums seem to indicate that it is anything but bad. Most say that is is extremely smooth, more so than Doom 3 and other resource intensive games.
Of course, some of you may think that a jan base would give a more than generous review, but some might also say fans are the best critics. They may be less inclined to be harsh or critical in their reviews, but they notice stuff others don't. I would rather trust someone who has been waiting years to play a game and knows what to expect than someone who doesn't.
It's a blast for me, and free! How can one say no, lest they don't have enough drive space or minimum specs? Personally I think it's worth it just for the interactivity at the start, and then the teleports and gravity gameplay later on. Forget how it looks AND that it's an FPS, just enjoy the new stuff!

Yes it does feel like a very interesting game... BUT...
man, the graphics are so resource intensive and STILL look shit. It reminded me of Thief: Deadly Shadows... where it used these kind of dynamic lighting/shadowing systems and the frame-rates were horrible and the game ended up looking worse than most of the games at the time that used more traditional methods. So much wasted potential.
Take HL2 for example, in the same system it looks about 20x better than this and it plays silky smooth.
With this game you get very poor frame-rates AND very poor graphics for the resources it uses. shame.
I know my graphics card is a little outdated now... but at least I can get games like HL2, BF2 to look nice AND play smoothly. For the much lower (IMO) quality of graphics Prey offers, the frame-rates are just horrible.

maybe Prey doesnt' down scale so well. how does your look compare to the stills on the website?
i think it looks a lot better than HL2 (tho i prefer the open environments) and i'm running it on lower settings

The graphics of this game sure are a matter of taste. They do look a lot like Doom/Quake in some places, but they also manage to look completely different in others:

However, the gameplay is so much fun I'd encourage everyone to try the demo, even if the don't care for the look too much.

ok, i played the demo...
I think its in some cases really innovative (e.g. weapons/ gravity/ spirit) and the graphics is great too but i just don't like that game ^^
I completly loose my orientation when walking around in these levels. I think its a technically great feature but i can't handle so much disorientation and distortion.
I like the whole atmosphere and setting of the game but for me its unplayable and too complex...sad but true :/

One of the finest games I've played to date.
Corny, and unoriginal in many ways- but very very entertaining.
Brilliant graphics (Also, this demo is very very friendly on my system. I don't know why people are complaining. Maybe they don't know how to set their settings?)
Very original concepts regarding portals and the like
The Spirit feature is killer
Very organic game with insane detail.
Thumbs up! I will definitely be buying it and crossing my fingers that it will leave me with the impression HL2 did.. or even better
PS. I also disagree with anyone who can find something to knock about it.

they have some normal map issues with the characters and their main girls body was contorted when she was behind the bar... :)
But... i throughly enjoyed the demo, i belive i will pick it up. And frankly it ran rather well on my system and the engine shines with this game.

I thought the game was really good. Yeah, the characters are fairly cheesy and pretty clishe, but I thought the environments and the plot were entertaining. The weapons were good, and the spirit ability was an awesome touch.
I also liked his reactions when encountering some of the more wackier stuff as he went along. I thought that was a funny touch. But yeah, I'd pick a copy of this game up. It's as innovative as a first person shooter could be, in my opinion.

I thought the demo was pretty fun - but the game is pretty dated (they need to find a way to make these things faster). The graphics are very much like Doom - better in some places, worse in others. And I'm not just talking about the general look of the engine - but the art direction is pretty much the same. Maybe there's an unspoken rule that every game made with the Doom 3 engine HAS to have half-organic/half-mechanical shit all over the place.
HL2 Ep1's graphics are in a different league.
It has some really unique and cool gameplay features though - the 3D walkways and the portals are very cool, as is the 'spirit walk'. I also like the environmenal concepts in the ship (the entire bar being in there, other things).
I can see that they really *tried* to make a cool story out of it - but they didn't exactly succeed. It's unbearably cheesy and cliche'ish. Some of it's pretty funny, the rest is pretty stupid.
The weapons don't really have the 'kick' to them that makes the ones in half-life and doom 3 so solid. But it's still fun and these things are so few are far between I'd recommend checking it out.

I thought it was fun, but not a game I'd buy. I didn't think it looked amazing, the scenes looked great, but the characters creeped me out, but graphics aside, it's just not my style of fps.

The game played solidly and smoothly on my spare 2.2 system/1gig ram and 9700Pro with onboard sound. I was amazed that the level of detail and effects did not kill my frame rates. Humanhead did a great job optimizing the Doom3 engine.
I liked the gameplay, interesting weaponry, and occasional character commentary.
My only question is. Is it different enough with all the Doom'esque pipes/glow panels/dark level design going on? Although fighting on that miniature 3d sphere was definately cool change, I'm not looking to buy/play a Doom3 variant.
Where single play has promise, Multiplay is decidely less impressive. The weapons feel more generic.
I hope Humanhead has mixed up the environments enough. I'm definately interested but i'll wait for the reviews after its released.

Its interesting.
It can get disorienting walking around on walls but I welcome something different like that so not too bad..
For a minute there I was walking around scared with the character but he quickly turned into a "chipper" kinda guy with the comments so I started to lighten up.. would of been good to keep the intensity. Never played doom III but im guessing it probably feels the same.

So uh... is it any good? Not sure if I want to download another game demo.
Reminds me of Doom III but the whole twisted gravity and portals thing i thought was pretty cool. Yeah it gets disorienting but that is the whole point. It is fun and fast even for a non directx 9 card.
It is not as intense as Doom III mainly becasue Prey is lit and also because of the comments.
I thought it was cool but am not sure if I would buy it yet I am still on the second level.

I'm digging the demo for sure. I really am into the story, despite it being textbook joseph campbell the details that flesh out the story and design is what I like. The art is iffy at points but overall very acceptable and serveing its purpose. Some very shining moments too. Like the spiritwalk, the body could just reveal clipping polys as you pass through but instead they have it burn away before you meet it. Love that. Id take that over poly clipping anyday.
I like the native american folklore too. The size scaling technology (box planet) and the wall walking very cool. All the really interesting things in the game I found are elements that are completely refreshing and original. I think the game is going to do quite well.
It's interesting how people talk about how smooth the game runs. On my old Geforce FX5600, the game is completely unplayable past a certain point. Up until that point, I have to play with everything off at 640x480. This was also tested on a similar computer with the 5600. The 5600 is known to have issues with certain pixel shaders, but I can run Doom 3 (for the most part) quite smoothly. So, I wouldn't go so far to say HunmanHead did a good job of optimising the Doom 3 engine... they obviously just relied on some other pixel shader technologies which kill cards like mine.

yah, wonderfull experience, but for me is enough. Like the environment, the soryline and gfx engine.. Another doom clone .. the demo will be enough.

This game is beyond belief....very original gameplay....the rules of gravity are out the door on this one!! Portals are totally sweet.....even some funny ones (you can see yourself entering and exiting them...i like the Nukem style comments that tommy makes, and there are some truly disturbing scenes in this!!
Kinda reminds me of a cross between System Shock 2, Doom 3 (for obvious reasons) Duke Nukem (for other obvious reasons) and Soul Reaver (another favorite of mine).
This is a fun and highly playable gaming experience and will definatly be on the must buy list. Btw, my laptop is not the most powerful around, and it runs it smooth as anything....with some crankin effects! I was very very impressed with the graphics engine....while yes, HL2 is the most optimized ive seen yet, this one runs impressively even on a system that is not TOTL.
Some awesome points of interest:
Many ways to effect gravity...icluding walkway pads, and buttons that determine where the floor will be....makes for some really interesting puzzles
Death is not the end.....when you die you can come back...making the game WAY less frustrating when you forget to save it.
Spirit walking......much like Soul Reaver...some environments will actually change when out of your body. In this one tho you can actually kill enemies when diembodied. You will actually have to but your physical body in some places and use your spirit to flip a switch for some puzzles (very cool concept)
Organic weapons....while this isnt new to gaming (see half life) this is the first time ive seen some of your weapons actually walk around....lol.
Multi-player takes on a whole new dimension......think about it this way....multi-player involves crazy gravity shifts (if you are on the ceiling and jump you will flip to the floor....making for some really interesting tricks), portals (your in one part of the map, then you walk through a hole and you are in another.....some portals even involve jumping off of a gravity plate upside down and falling from the ceiling to the floor of another room....yeah it gets weird!), spirit walking in a death match (this is cool because you can hide your body and get some extra shots off before getting sent back, or you can spy around corners without getting killed).
All in all this is a KILLER game demo....it is five levels long but dont let that decieve you, it is short.....but a really great ride along the way.
This one is not for kiddies, or the faint of heart, as there are some very cinematicly brutal scenes (like if you accidentally re-activate the people juicer machine....i felt bad.), and it really runs smooth even on some lesser machines!
I'll be getting it when it comes out!
