Greetings esteemed CGTALK folks

Find at this location (http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/icarus/movies/kidwars-2-trailer.wmv) (.WMV) a little experiment I did with ICARUS (http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/icarus/) motion tracking:

http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/icarus/movies/kidwars-2-trailer.jpg

The AT-AT walker is added in MAX. The explosions, blasts, smoke etc. are all added as 3D layers in After Effects.

This is kinda a test so some explosions are better than others etc. Take special notes to the little "snow explosions" which is actually me setting of a firecracker under the snow, and then comping this in as a 3D layer.

The smoke is actually real smoke from a factory smokestack comped in using the sky as a natural bluescreen.

Comments appreciated :)

Great compositing work!

Few crits...

The explosions and lasers need lots of work.

THat smoke just really does not fit in with the rest of the scene.

Lasers need a little more definition...

Camera matching is perfect, I love the theme you have there, and the kids at the end...Priceless, busted out laughing!! :applause:

If you work on the explosions and smoke, and lasers, it will be perfect!

Hope to seee you continue on this path, VERY NICE!!

Just great stuff. Great compositing and great animating work.

Only crit is the leg movement on the AT-AT's. It is way too quick. Watch Empire again and watch the movement. It is very slow and methodical.

I agree with Spidey 1138 on the smoke and the lasers though. Needs some work to be that much better.

Good work.

animation on the AT is a bit weird.

overall looking good!

I have to agree AT looks funny walking. Some of the smoke seemed floating off the ground. Over all nice job. Loved the kids at the end that was cool.

How did you find Icarus to be? Easy to use? What software did you do the animation stuff with?

The explosions and lasers need lots of work

Many of the explosions were just dropped in pyro's gotten off the web.

However, two of them was me actually shooting fire-crackers under the snow, and comping this in. That looked pretty cool didn't it? You can even see the smoking holes briefly in the lower left of the frame as the camera pans right.

Camera matching is perfect, I love the theme you have there, and the kids at the end...Priceless, busted out laughing!!

If you like the kids go watch the precursor to this, KID WARS (http://www.kidwars.com)

Only crit is the leg movement on the AT-AT's. It is way too quick. Watch Empire again and watch the movement. It is very slow and methodical.

Known. This has several reasons

1. Motion-tracking even this short sequence takes time and tries... so I wanted a SHORT sequence and yet see the AT-AT relly *move*

2. I made an older version first which had no (or very very bad, not IK) leg animation, and the body motion was just a move, and I lined all the lasers up to that. When I "fixed" the legs w. real IK it turned out I had moved it a bit too faaast oops :) :shame:

animation on the AT is a bit weird.

Yeah the IK was a bit whacky, but for this project it was good nuff ;)

How did you find Icarus to be? Easy to use? What software did you do the animation stuff with?

When it works Icarus can actually be a one-button thing, just press "track and calibrate" and take a LARGe cup of coffee (it takes time!).

A prequel shot to this shot was tracked in the much simpler "Pan/Zoom/Tilt" mode, i.e. where the camera is moving put its LOCATATION is still... that was one-button right-away working! I'm gonna show you that one soon.

3D stuff was done in 3DS MAX 4.2 and the other stuff was comped in as 3D layers in Adobe After Effects 5.
