Rigging done (save for the dressings) Texture work started and about 50% done that.
aim is to have the short i have in mind done by about april-ish. (Scratch that, this may be delayed for Real life reasons.)
wasn't able to work as much as i would have like over the past six months as the last job i had was eating pretty much all my time. (standard shift length, but one hell-of-a commute on the TTC.)

Heres a little update and detail shot... if anyone experienced with rigging can see a potential problem cropping up, could you please let me know.
Thank you.

Wireframe looks great. You might want to concentrate some more loops around the shoulder/waist, though. Everything looks pretty evenly spaced out right now, so I'm imagining that when he puts his arms down those faces and the texture there will get really stretched out.

Quick Update... finished the Trapezius muscles. (still have to insert them into the shoulders and neck. going to wait until the shoulder muscles are done for that)

Old thread, i know, decided to continue this one before it eats too much dust...
went in and did some refinement to the face and added the googles that i have in mind... any crits would be greatly appreciated and please tell me if you see something going wrong or what have you. though i'd still consider myself a n00b, i think i'm getting better.
and yes, i know it's been too long since this thread was updated. but at the least i'm not just sitting at home anymore twiddling my thumbs... the industry isn't going to come to me, i have to make it to the industry (if i ever hope to get out of this call-center job that i've been doing for the past 5 months.) so, yeah...
end result will hopefully be a character that i can use to test out some rigging concepts that i have in mind. i don't even know if they'll work out, but live, learn and experiment... right?
so yeah... please post crits. i will be in your debt if you are willing to help me bring this creature to life.

update for the morning... initially i wanted to get those nice grooves in the pectoral area where it attaches to the ribcage in the center, but after about an hour of fiddling, i wasn't happy with the results so i scrapped it and went on to the abs. it still needs some more love, but i thought i should update things as i'm coming along with them here (so that if someone has a tip or something, they can offer it... eh? :p )
still have to work on the collarbone, that will be fun (and may need some serious cleanup since the edgeflow there doesn't look all that super) and of course, have to do the back before going on to the arms. (they're in need of refinement)
Crits please!

I like the design of the head. He might benifit from a bit more detail in an ear that large.
The torso seems to be getting bigger than the proportions of the waist and head. The collar bones are a must.
What do you have in mind for an oufit?
Will he have fur? If so more detail might not be needed.
Keep plugging away at it.

Working some more... finalized and tweaked the shoulders (they're not so far out anymore, so the edges are more compacted now) as well as added some more edges in the ear to help fill out some of the areas.
items still left to do...
- traps
- legs
- hands
- clothing (initially, its going to be a loincloth, various wrappings and some tribal jewelry)
- hair
- weapon (a DIY bisento)
- the platform he's going to be standing on for the final gloryshot)
Thank you for the suggestions, i've been getting abunch of help on this from friends and family members and as much as i do value their input, i really need some more advise from character modelers and riggers as to the more technical side of things... i've been told it looks good, but will it move well, that kinda thing...

more progress, another day and another couple hours where i can get some more work done.
today was the neck muscles and collar bone... i think i'm getting close to hitting the mark, but a fresh pair of eyes would certainly help.

You are making some real good progress.
I'm no rigging expert so I don't want to comment on how many edge loops you need at each joint. If texture stretching is a problem you can always add more as you are testing your rig.
One more minor crit on the collar bones. Usually they are more pronounced where they meet the shoulders and less where they meet the rib cage.

Wireframs shots overall and of the hands...
again, i'm not sure how much more love i should show for the hands since i'm not really "feeling it" at this point... they would certainly work considering that i have some bracer/wrappings in mind so a lot of the geometry there wouldn't be seen (the fingers are more important) but still... this is something that i would like to be really good at (and yeah, i know, practise... that will come since this isn't the ONLY character i plan on making but still... bar raised, that kinda thing...)
comments and crits are welcome and encouraged.

Hey Man:
Looks good so far, keep up the good work. I think we are in the same boat, people view but no one posts any replies, guess that must mean our work can't be improved eh? Haha. Anyway a few comments on you character. First all I like the design, interesting concept and something new! The face is really well done, I would suggest maybe thickening up the ears as they look a little thin right now, also try to "bulk up" the chest and abs a bit more, add a little more definition by bringing them out, it will make them look more natural and less flat. Anyway nice job and keep it up!

Looking forward to seeing some deformations.
I have some thoughts on different areas but would like to see how the deformations turn out.

Thanks all, i've gone ahead and plumped out the chest and abs a little bit as well as fattened the ear a tad. not too plump, mind, since i want him to retain a smooth line and all that. for the most part, the wires are pretty straightforward, no change from the last iteration to the flow, so i didn't think it would be nessessary to post a wireframe shot if there's one already here.
comments and crits are more than welcome.
next up, rigging and unwrapping.

i'd be interested in seeing how you'd tackle this, but i do have a few ideas i want to test out on him as well... just to see if they work mostly (isn't curiosity fun!)

should be fun to rig and skin! have you thought of any ideas for any custom scripted stuff, or is this just going to be a basic rig?
WMBrown
03-14-2007, 05:07 PM
well, as much as i do have to brush up on this, i do have some muscle ideas that i want to try out... been foaming at the mouth to try them out (a layered stretchy bone system to simulate how the muscle tissue can insert into itself and other areas) as well as some control ideas for the abdomen, but other than that, it's going to be like one of pauls i hope.
though, i am trying to work on getting the scripts built so that i don't have to build and re-build the rigs for each character... kinda a drag and drop kinda deal like Paul has going, but that will probably take some time and this guy i'm hoping will be done by the time i crack that.
Thanks for the Reply! keep up your own awesome work, you're really getting damn good at this :D

hey all, haven't forgotten about this guy at all, been working on the rig for the most part. it's getting there, just ahve to put on the final touches and he'll be ready to skin.
though, he's currently on hold since a company has sent me an evaluation test... since obtaining gainful employment in the industry is my primary focus, that particular project will be the number one force... i'll certainly get back to him when i'm either A) taking a break, or B) done.
so, yeah. haven't forgotten, haven't lost steam, just focusing on the priority tasks for now.

How about thickening up his obliques? His hips also look a bit narrow. But it is definitely progressing.
How is Humber?

it's definately nice work!
I wonder though if maybe widening his stance might help to visualize his proprtions. I know it's in a modeling stage, but the severity of the way he is standing is quite unnatural.
keep posting your progress... I like it.

after a few months on hiatus (a lot on my plate as of late, didn't get the chance to really dive into this guy) i've been able to get back into working on this character.
modeling of the body has been signed off on. the hair in there is only a proxy at the moment for visualisation (i'm aiming for something like that with Hair and Fur plugin.) the Rig has been completed as has the skinning. the armour and clothing hasn't been rigged right in as i a) wanted to get the rigging done and b) this does give me flexibility to change it without having to go all the way back to the skinning.
texturing is not done yet as is the low-poly hair that i'm also going to use (other than the head as i have a scene in mind where i'll need it to react with the dynamics and turbulence of wind)
i'll work on getting a MOV file up so that i can showcase him moving. can't give an ETA on that though.
if anyone has any tips on how to optimise the Hair and Fur modifier or some advise on rigging up the armour (you can check one of the previous posts for what it looks like) i would be greatly appreciative!

so, my last job kinda took a little more time form me than i would have liked. not really leaving me much time to work on this character. (8 hr shift, 4 hours commute... being a pedestrian does have it's downsides.)
unfortunately, my job is being moved to India and i am not. so, i have more time on my hands now. kinda want to get this out the door by april-ish so i have to work a little harder.
made some changes to the texture and am texturing up the dressings and finishing up the body. so far, only diffuse but the rest will be coming. for some reason, he reminds me of Ryuk from Deathnote somehow... might be the hair and eyes (*shrugs*)
anyhow, here's an update since i've had more time to work on him.
