Okay, for my first try at one of the challenges here, I'm goning for Quetzalcoatl, the "Feathered Snake" god from Aztec religion (or is that Incan?...oh well).

I tried to come up with some nifty designs for Apollo and Thor but they looked too plain. This guy should be fun to model and will push both myself and my little Rhino to its limits. I just hope my PC can take the pressure. :D

Cool! More interesting than Thor, I think, and it certainly looks like a challenge to model.

BTW, that's a really awesome sketch, did you draw that?
Good luck!

THanks. Yeah, I drew it. Started it on my lunch break and just finished it about ten minutes ago. I'm glad you like it. I hope I can do a good job converting it to 3D.

Very nice man, hope you can achieve that style in 3D. Looking forward to seeing it.

I'd say you nailed it. If you can match your concept art through this whole piece.. It'll be phenomenal!

Hey Teyon

Brilliant modeling. Really nice, but I can't help picturing a hand in there somewhere :D.

Its like a big evil kermit... Bet the Aztecs never thought of that angle :).

Thanks. LOL. Kermit an ancient Aztec god! Now it all makes sense! ;) His torso is driving me batty. I had it for a sec but didn't save and of course, windows crashed on me. *sigh* I still have to learn that lesson the hard way it seems.

More to come... I hope.

Just a note.... I modeled a character some months ago where the design was based on the Mayan God Quetzalcoatl... your sketch shows a reletively short tail. It can't be too long. I went through about four revisions before it was accpeted and it wound up being about three times as long as my original concept. It just never worked right in the balancing act. Of course, when I started posing the character... sure enough the longer the tail the better it looked.

Djeeeezz dude....I was wrong! Your the man!!!:buttrock:

Thanks again everyone and Logan...it's great to be here! Someone else mentioned the tail's width and length and I guess that means it'll a be a little longer than shown here, which is fine with me. I started work on his torso again but I have a few problem areas to iron out before getting on to the lower half. Once all the major shapes are blocked out, I can worry about the tiny details like eyes, feathers, etc.

Thanks again for making me feel at home here folks. :D

Wow this is really awesome - I'm impressed that someone had the guts to do an Aztec god (I'm a big fan of their mythology :)) because of their bizarre nature. But I'd say you're nailing it! The model is looking really really promising so far!
Fantastic work, Teyon!! Keep it up :)

Hey there you two! Thanks for the praise. Here's an update. I'm going to go back and tweak the head (add details and stuff) but I wanted to test out an idea for making feathers in Rhino. I think it'll work so I'll refine them when the model's done.

Thanks Joe.

Sorry gang, been a little busy lately. Here's another quick update.

Teyon

Should mention I haven't changed the head yet. I just had to see what the whole thing would look like so I roughed out the lower half tonight. This weekend will see the head updated for sure...

Thanks, I'm basically done with the head now, all I have to do is finsih detailing the tail, add some hands, and finalize the look of the feathers. Figure the end of next week at the latest. I wish I had some way of texturing this but Rhino sucks big time for that. :(

Ran into a snag a few minutes ago with the inner mouth....gonna have to do that part over too. Here's my head's detail.

Hey, this looks great - but to remind you: you have to do a model without textures (but I would appreciate a textured version on your homepage).

go on!:D

Teyon
03-17-2002, 05:24 PM
:) Thanks but no need to worry. Trying to use textures in Rhino is about as easy as using a katana to brush your teeth with. Thanks to my pal Logan, however, I leanred a neat way to light my model so it looks sorta textured (like above). Not to fear, a nice solid color (ivory) is what this guy is using on the final image.

Teyon I love this model. The head is wonderfully done you can see all that power in the jaw. The only thing I see that looks off right now are the feathers. Personaly I don't think they fit the character very well but this is a WIP it would be interesting to see if you could make them work.

really nice model, but I think the feathers looks not natural enough, they are looking like sticked onto the model

Thanks one and all for the kind words, I am really gratefull.

*ahem* Now, as I said before, the feathers shown are just place holders. They're there so I can get an idea on scale. :)

I'll be sure to post as soon as I finish the new feathers I'm working on and gotten a few of them blended to the body properly. I can see it will be tough doing htis with Nurbs in Rhino but it's all I have. I just hope my meager Pentium2 can hold out until I'm done.

Thanks again, you guys are awesome and my next model will be much better due to your influence.

I'm glad to see someone creating an Aztec god. I was going to do that, but, um, changed direction.

Anywho, don't give up now, I want to to see this badboy finished. Good work so far.:wip:

Loving the muscular look you're getting in the head and neck region. You've also done a great job of the serpentine like tail end. I'd add the detail of the underside of the tail in modeling and if you're up to it actually model the scales in. All in all, lovin it.

Thanks gang! I'm already on the tail detail as I type this. The arms have been thinned down a bit in the forearm area and I don't know about the scales. Something tells me modeling scales on a nurbs model will be more than a little difficult....I'll see if I can come up with something though. Thanks again:thumbsup:

I want an update!!!....great concept sketch and some Impressive spline modeling to boot!!
I ended up making at least 20 heads with nurbs until I discovered poly's and sub-d's...haven't turned back since :)

Thanks. Yeah, it ain't easy! :) I wasted the 3 Day weekend away, so I'm catching up now. I'll post an update later today and see about showing you all a wireframe.

....

.......

Okay, here's a new shot of the head and a neat little wire. I kinda went overbaord on the isoparms but I forgot about point weights until the head was nearly finished. Oh well.

Thanks for the kind words. Well, here it is. I don't like the feathers at all but I didn't have time to set them proeprly and render the image in time for the challenge. Spent all my time on the hands and the blasted tail! Should've done a toon, it would've been so much easier for me. I can't wait 'till the next one...I'm gonna be soo much better at this stuff thanks to you all!;)

NICE!!!!!

i'd love to see the lighted version of the render (the trick you used for the head some pages back...) i'd love to know how you did it in rhino!!

hope to see other stuff on the next challenge too!!!

Hi there.

In My Humble Opinion, I don't really like the design or concept sketch I'm afraid. Pretty good technical modelling skills but the way the shoulders mould up into the head doesn't look good to me.

Also I kinda get a sense from this latest render that this character is not balanced and would not be able to stand up in the way he is currently posed. There is also a residual 'Jar Jar Binks' thing going on in there for me also (certain angles on the head remind me of that good for nothing star wars nobody.)

But again, you have good modelling skills and your transition from the 'sketch' to the model is quite successful but I just feel that maybe more work was needed on the sketch before you got down to modelling it.

Si.

Good snake concept:wip:

Thanks. I'll admit, I'm not happy with the transition from body to neck and now that I've had more time, I was able to get it to look better...too bad I can't post it until after the voting is done though. Also, everyone keeps forgetting that this is a god...more likely than not, it can fly, with or without wings. Standing I think wouldn't be an issue but I did listen to the crits I got and I widened the waist area too, thus forcing the tail to be wider.

I am glad I got so many good crits (the praise was nice too, don't get me wrong) because this is only my fourth semi-realistic full body model. I usually do toon style characters. I was afraid those who've seen my other stuff would be so impressed with my stepping over to more "serious" work, that I wouldn't get honest crits. It's such a pleasent surprise to get repsonses where people point out my mistakes. Thanks a bunch!!
