Sony Patents New Tech - Material That Can Change Shape

http://www.psxextreme.com/scripts/news2/new.asp?newID=3776 You might be enjoying an "electrorheological fluid device" with your PS4. As complicated as that sounds, the concept is fairly simple - it's an material which is thin and flat enough to be rolled or folded, but can become rigid by running a small electrical current through it. Sony has filed a patent for the technology which it cites could have applications for gaming. Imagine a future iteration of the PSP which could essentially be rolled up like a scroll and put in your pocket, or a controller that has areas which change shape and consistency based on in-game actions.

One potential scenario cited in the application:

"The electrorheological fluid device can be applied to, for example, part of a controller of a home-use game machine as another example of the electronic apparatus of the present invention. A user touches a control section of the controller by fingers, and the feeling of touch is controlled by the electrorheological fluid device. For example, if a game player is defeated in a fighting game, the electrorheological fluid device is controlled to become soft in order to improve the realistic sensations in the game."

Of course, this technology can also be used in a wide range of other devices and has far-reaching implications for portability and "4D" gameplay (in entertainment terms, tactile engagement with the fictional world). The implementation is far off, but it bodes well for exciting new possibilities beyond the traditional controller.

Wonder how long before the successor to the vibrating "controller" that came with the Japanese edition of Rez shows up. :argh:

yet another great use is for a robot that can take on the shape of anything it touches (well except a bomb or anything with moving parts.) Think they are getting together with google on this one....with their Skynet facility.

hey bro (im back shhh :p)

but ye, i really dont like this idea. it sounds so desperate. Its like theyre just throwing a patent on anything that can possibly be related to video games. This doesnt sound like it will enhance gameplay. So the pad can be soft and then hard. ?? and ??

what situations in life have ever required the need for this? or what can that simulate?? i cant think of one good use. Let alone a generic use taht can be pulled off for every game you play.

Sony need to hire some poeple who give a damn about computer games and not just making money. I mean fair enuf, i could eat my words at some point if they think of a good innovative use for this, but at the mo it looks like their running out of ideas....

just my 2 sterling pence... :)

Don't be so close-minded!:p

This patent will probably be used for the next PSP (or the one after that). The idea is that the screen can be folded/rolled and then unfolded to become rigid when you play or watch a movie. This makes it possible to have a bigger display, you could even buy a few of different sizes depending on the purpose.

In the future, when they have more control over which parts turn solid, it would also be used to have button-less controllers. The Wii's remotes was originally rumored to be button-less. The control scheme was to change based on the game you played by changing the display of a touch-sensitive LCD screen on the controller. Playing an old NES game? Only the NES buttons would appear. Etc. The problem was that it would not be easy for the gamer to get the feeling that he is touching the buttons.

With this technology Sony is patenting, it would enable them to have the parts were the buttons would appear to become softer, or stick out a bit, etc.

I thought of a use...

A gaming controller that adjusts itself to the game your playing with different functions and moulds itself to ergonically fit your hands and the way you use it.

Or the perverted idea which I won`t go into... *sweatdrop*

Least they havent got the patent for wormhole technology:
