View Full Version : Character: Plucky duck
emilioG 01-13-2003, 05:12 PM well, what do you think? Hopefully I'll have time to put up some more pics in the next few days on his facials, etc. Plucky's fully expressive and has full squash and stretch.

Really great! Are you going to stay with normal rendering conventions, or are you going to render with a toon shader?
emilioG
01-13-2003, 05:55 PM
I thought I'd go 3D. It'll give him a new perspective.I made sure he's really expressive. Well, as close as possible to Plucky's 2D version as I can get. Seems to be working out.:D
The whole toon shade thing doesn't appeal to me 'cause of one major reason. When something is drawn in 2D, the lines shake. From cell to cell, no one can draw it perfectly. And that's what bothers me about toon shading. it's too perfect. There's no volume loss, the lines are perfect, and they also seem to disappear wrong. The 2D artist has the choice of making a line disappear when he feels like it. For us, the computer chooses to over a Z-buffer technique, or so I think!
Enough incoherent rambling from me. :p
So, 3D it is.
YAY!!!
I wanna push da button
Great work!!! Love the Plucky. Man I have not seen Tiny Toons in forever. I used to love it so much. Great work you did here.

nice character. Looks a little bit like a green family member of Donald Duck. The expressions are cool. Especsscially the teeth.
I want an animation of this duck

In your first pic, it would be so cute if his jaw was hitting the floor or something - giving him a look of shock or amazement. LOL!

Keep your final fantasy, ultra human stuff (no offense to any1!) The cartoony stuff rules (IMHO). I love the fact that this thing looks obviously unreal, but totally touchable (not just the render either, but the volumes also). Can we see a wire? GREAT WORK!!!

Very nice, you got the volumes right and he looks really good. Alot of times when people do cartoony characters they dont look very solid, no weight. This guy does. Can you explain how you light him, and what is the specific setup you use. Thanks, and nice piece.

01-14-2003, 09:41 AM
Aw man, that's classic! Like most others, I usually dig the cartoony stuff most of all. I agree with chudofsinister, the sense of volume and weight with him is great. And I don't think that's solely down to the brazil style render. Well done!
I'd love to see an animation of him.
This is the type of stuff that makes you want to get down and do a new character. Cheers!

just got to work. Wow, I have to say you're all great!!! Thank you for all the comments.
answering questions:
1) Lightracer( fake radiosity)
2) squash and stretch implemented (props to Paul Neale for teaching me. remember that name boys)
3)3d or not 3d? 3d. No toon shader, it would NEVER do 2d plucky justice.
4) thanx!
I read all of them (duh!)
Wireframe!!!! ok ok! hee hee! Chong's gonna grab 2 avi's and upload them to his site for me.
1 is a turnaround and the other an, and I can't stress this enough, UNFINISHED walk cycle. heheh.
I'll be uploading pics every minute or so, so stay tuned!

Wow Thank for the Pics!
Does this Paul Neale that you mentioned have a website or tutorials giving insight into toon character rigging and modeling to suit the range of movment needed (ie your great drop jaw tounge on floor bit!)?
I Love the images you have posted but I suggest using a different color from green, or muted green so that Plucky reads against the background a bit better to create a more contrasting sillhouette.
:)

his expressiveness is my doing. Although I'm sure Paul could pull it off.
Paul gave me some tricks. Not to put him down, at all, on the contrary, he's a Max Guru in my book, but this character is my doing.
Bookmark this, it's Paul's homepage:
http://members.rogers.com/paulneale/
Always some good stuff there. Great scripts for characters. He's actaully working on an AVI tutorial. rigging a character from start to finsh. THAT is gonna be badass.

I'm sorry...but I don't get it.
It looks real cute and nice.....
but it's not even an original character or design.
It's a straight copy of the duck....very similar to the bart 3D we saw years ago on the simpsons.

emilioG,
I completely respect you for doing Plucky.
I'm a huge fan of the show....my fav is Pinky (and the Brain..of course).
I'm just confused by the rating system in here...
I'm just confused in general....
and maybe a bit jealouse...
oh well...c'est la vie.

yeah, I'd have to agree. The rating system is probably based on several things. Art, technical, number of posts, how good they are, etc.
I think in the end it's: does it turn your nob or not?! hee hee!
talk to you later man.
Like you would say,
Peace!

Rock on. This absolutely rules, I love plucky.
I don't believe people are so indoctrinated not to realize real skill when they see it. So busy criticizing, it's sad. Plucky has never been done in 3d before, and it takes real skill to get a likeness of someone else's character.

Great adaptation!!!
The walk cycle needs a little more work! Move hips a little more!To have a little swaying! For the moment, he is not walking as good as he can ! To rigid!
But you made a great great work!!!

I don't believe it's that at all, I also found it odd that everyones
gone so ape about this, and yet in the same forum someones
made an original character, animated him, and used him in a
short story and got... 2 replies. hehe.
Plucky..
I think it's a good model, and it looks like him, and it's not
a criticism to say when something doesn't rock your boat.
Not trying to be downbeat, it does look good, and ( apart
from animation ), theres not a lot further you could take it
apart from putting him in a scene.
Shouldn't unfinished animation be taken to the WIP Forum btw?
Cheers for now.
good point, i think people blew up about it so much cause it was on te front page wasnt it??? also, it is well modelled and its a character a lot of people probably grew up with so theres memories there as well.
anyway, it might be a wip animation but it isnt a wip model which i believe is what it was posted as
:scream:
hehe

Looking good bro! Really good :)
But than again.... what else is new?
emilioG
01-15-2003, 02:23 PM
I Love critics.
Cuse. That's right. he was posted as a character. I don't want to start a new thread on an animation that's unfinished, when I know it's unfinished.
TVTuna: I grew up with Plucky too, and that's why I modeled him. I have him tatooed on my back, and that's how much I Love that character.
Unless a post is constructive criticism, it should be posted. whether it's here or on any other post.
As for originality, like I said b4, i do both. I like making characters that are 100% mine, and I also Love making characters that I've always loved. Simple. That's what usually happens. For example, when a song gets remixed, especially in techno, it's 'cause the person REALLY likes it.
I got the chance to do Harley Quinn for DC Comics in 3D. And for the record, I welcomed it BIGTIME (Guyjin did the Joker, good man! What's up buddy!).
I Love Plucky. End of Story.:buttrock:
